a friend of mine from high school was just talking to me about NAID. I'd completely forgotten about it. The biggest difference between this demoparty and NAID is the fact that now I have money for airfare:)
I'll agree the hardsid is pricey, but it's also a fully programmable synth. The parallel port sid projects out there are awesome if you just want to play sid tunes (which isn't a bad thing) but require far more work to use as a synth. They're just aimed at different markets.
I have a sidstation which is great, but sadly in short supply nowadays. It's way more than a HardSid but also has a nice interface and doesn't require a PC to play.
no, polyphony would be playing more than 1 note of the same instrument. Having 3 different sounds coming from the same device makes it multitimbral, not polyphonic. If you were to program all 3 oscillators to sound the same and play them in unison you would get 3 note polyphony.
The sid chip had three monophonic digital oscillators, individual envelopes, and an analog filter. Sometimes people used it to simulate polyphony but mostly it was used to make a full song (ie. 1 osc for drums, 1 for bass, 1 for lead)
Some of the music composed on the C64 was amazingly complex given how limited it was. The C64 was also one of the first platforms used for "demos" (mostly in the form of crappy scrollers.)
For those who really really love the sound of the SID chip there are lots of options to get it back. Most notably is the SidStation which is sadly no longer made and the HardSid.
I believe a condiut only handles communication between HotSync and that application you want to sync with. HotSync is what actually handles communication with the Palm device. So without HotSync a condiut won't do much good.
I've often thought that if I go to hell when I die Satan will be standing there with a HUGE spool of cat5, some crimpers, and a big-ass patchpanel, and he'll say to me "I want every soul down here to have an internet connection, ASAP!"
According to this article the fine is not for violating the recently enacted DNC list, but rather for violating separate FCC rules. Specifically if someone asks you to remove their name from your list you are required to do so.
What is also interesting is AT&T's reaction in the above article, as I have had telemarketers call me offerring me things like identity theft protection on my AT&T Universal card, yet they aren't at all affiliated with AT&T.
For anyone interested in sci-fi books about AI, I can't recommend When Harley Was One highly enough. It was one of the first books about AI I ever read and I still think of it anytime the subject comes up.
I don't think the US has ever called Sandinistas "freedom fighters." Especially since they were in power for 21 years (during which we financed a rebel army to fight them.)

Even today we seem to be very clear that they have terrorist ties.
While I agree with your general belief that hardware synths are not going away I don't believe software cracks are the reason. Generally speaking the people who crack their VST plugins and audio software are people who can't afford $300 for each and every plugin they use plus $500-$800 for any other software packages (Logic Audio, Pro Tools, etc) and therefore they are not lost income. If someone is doing music professionally they will more likely have the money to invest in the software for their business, unlike some hobbyist doing experimental stuff just for his friends to listen to.
When the whole blogging fad first hit a friend of mine decided he would set up his own. So he hacked up a ksh script and installed gopher. Now when he wants to add an entry he just runs "updateblog" and types his entry into vi. On exit it uploads to his gopher server.
I actually watched 3 or 4 episodes. I thought they were all really really bad. Another poster said he felt the same way until he saw the pilot, so maybe that's just what I missed. Most networks don't normally air pilots tho, so I don't see how/why that would help.
I'm sorry, but I saw NONE of what you listed in Firefly. That show was boring, poorly written, and the acting was horrid! The characters were so 1 dimensional it was almost funny.
I wasn't shocked at all when it was cancelled, as I could barely sit through one episode without cringing.
I just checked and every single song history lists at least 1 major artist (probably more, I just don't have much knowledge in some of these genres.) Yes some do play more than others but that still negates your statement that they have the direct permission of each artist they play.
It's all a moot point anyway, as SomaFM has never said they don't want to pay royalties, just that they want them to be fair.
. If that were true, why would stations like SomaFM.com that play independent and non-corporate music still be forced to pay the RIAA? They have permission from every artist that they play.
Not to nitpick but that is just not true. Cliqhop (one of the stations on SomaFM) has played many large, mainstream artists in the past hour (squarepusher, autechre, mu-ziq, etc.) From what I can tell all of their stations are the same. They may play a larger mix of independent artists but they definitely play non-independent artists quite a bit.
How do you use encryption on this ham based ISP? Wouldn't the banner ads and spam count as broadcasting commercial speech and get you fined by the FCC? Do you really think mom&pop are going to get their technicians license just to send their kid email at school?
Being a slashdotter means never having to say you're sorry when you ostracize a seemingly archaic, yet dependable, technology that shows its worth when all else fails.
er, I thought we liked UNIX on Slashdot. Did I not get the memo?
Just to chime in with my 2 cents, I highly recomment SquirrelMail over IMP, as I've found it easier to install and maintain than IMP. IMP was ok in earlier versions but the Horde stuff is completely bloated and poorly written.
heh

This is also an option for the DIY crowd:

I also can't recommend Kohina enough.

While we're talking about cars, let's take a look at how they rate on the Gary Busey scale of ugliness
His DivX collection is slashdotted...Anyone have a mirror?

Smelling a lawsuit from a distance must surely infringe on a SCO business process patent. I smell a...er wait...nevermind.
Given the general spiritual realm I'm sure we all agree lawyers and marketing folks hail from, shouldn't that be "come up and meet him"?

I suppose it just goes to prove your point, but I'm still ashamed at how quickly I was able to read that.
A mountie carrying the Canadian flag while beating Celine Dion with a hockey stick?

My friends are huge dorks.
What made these kids do it? I'm willing to bet the amish don't allow kids to play GTA3.
