More power to them. I don't know much in the area of finance and the like, but stories like this continue to give me the impression large financial institutions like to play fast and loose with other people's (read: little guy's) money. Too big to fail? More like too big to be allowed continued operation.

  12. Re:Real-world consequences on More Users Are Shunning Facebook · · Score: 1

Agreed. I have been one of those people no longer excited about social networking for some time, and I find that Facebook has lost a lot of its' value. The only thing keeping me from leaving it is all the people and family I left when I transferred schools, and how easy it is to stay in contact with them. These sites are still an adequate tool for maintaining such relationships, but it can be frustrating to do so with all the mindless junk that gets mixed in.

What is sad yet no less true is that sites like Facebook are seen as a requirement for being a social person. Being an introverted person, this fact seems to glare at me the more I use Facebook. I have tried being the social person that "shares" with everyone, but anymore I find myself cherishing the genuine human contact I receive from actually talking to people. Sure Facebook is great for wasting a couple minutes to catch up with everything going on in your world. But its good for no more than that. Life truly is more fulfilling when you just close that tab, and do something else. I'm not leaving it, just leaving it alone.

The Great Plains are beautiful territory to explore, and excellent hunting grounds, but you're rarely more than a few hours from a township or a ranch house. 20. Kudos are owed to Goatse on AT&T Breach May Be Worse Than Initially Thought · · Score: 1

Like a few other /.ers have pointed out, I feel this is more about the money. I do agree that Goatse probably didn't go about this in the most ethical manner, however I think their intent was good in nature. From the way it sounds, they wanted to make sure AT&T knew of the security hole, but also wanted the corporation to be held accountable by going to a media outlet. This ensures the company knows about the issue and has to take more prompt action to resolve it.

Now back to the money. I don't doubt AT&T was half-assing their security, because from my experience, they half-ass their service as well. They obviously did not make sure their website was fully secure and allowed sensitive customer data to be taken right out from under their noses. They saved some money by skimping on security, and now they are gonna lose more because they have to fix the hole. Add to that the potential customers they are going to lose because of people who caught wind of the fiasco. On top of which will be some customers who will jump ship due to the client-company trust being broken. And to add more insult to injury, AT&T may just have to replace all those compromised SIM cards like the expert in the story suggested.

And let's all not forget AT&T's record of network performance, especially with Apple devices. That's even more money lost to reinforcing an already staggering network infrastructure. Although that can be seen as an investment as well. Given their current circumstances though, the positive side is not as likely.

By now you could say I'm just being an AT&T troll, but looking back at my past experiences with the company, along with the experiences of friends and family who are customers, I'm going to say AT&T needs to clean up their act. They're in a world of hurt now, and I would just like to seem them improve for the sake of their customers.

Whew, time for a beer. Cheers! *wipes forehead*

  21. Paid for being on call? Yes, please! on Should You Be Paid For Being On Call? · · Score: 1

I think it would be only fair that an IT person get paid for being on call beyond their regular work hours. Especially if they are willing to make themselves available all 168 hours of the week. To me, that takes true commitment to the job and the spirit of real trooper. I can only imagine how taxing that might be on a person to get called any time during the day for a problem they may or may not be prepared for.

Last year I had picked up a similar job to help fund my way through college. While my on call hours were only the same as the business, since it was only regular business hours (9-5), it was still a bit hectic.

I thought it was fair I only got paid for the work I did, plus I got compensated for driving time. It would have been nice to receive pay for the 8 hours I was on call, considering there were a few occasions where I had to leave class early for a technical emergency, but all in all, I still attained some good experience and knowledge.
