You seem to be forgetting that "fluency" on computers, in a modern work environment, pretty much means being able to remember your work PC's password and use a browser and MS Office.
I find PocketCloud's RDP client to be pretty much everything I need when I'm on the go. And with more or less universal Android Bluetooth HID support as of 3.0/4.0 (Honeycomb and ICS respectively), using the devices as a remote workstation actually becomes feasible. Hell, my phone has almost the same resolution as my subnotebook (1280x720 vs. 1280x800), and HDMI out if I want it.
Modern smartphone + HSPA or better and you're pretty much there. I use my phone similarly (Android with an RDP client), and streaming video hasn't been a problem for the last year or so...
You just need ot move somewhere that offers you cell service that can provide you with enough bandwidth.
For a simple system that's pretty much completely hidden from users who don't know about it, Dexpot is hard to beat. Fully configurable keyboard shortcuts for fast switching, moving and copying windows, permanent assigning of windows/programs to certain desktops, and a bunch of plugins (I don't use any of 'em, but they're there if you need/want them) for visual effects and Win7 taskbar integration and such... It's pretty slick.
Would you mind giving us some more info about that power Pack you built? 24 hours at full load must must be something like 500Wh. I'd love to put something like that together...
If you're satisfied with the build quality, battery life, performance, availability of replacement parts and general robustness of the machine, go ahead!
Personally, I'll stick with a machine I can chuck down a flight of stairs without worrying about anything other than the stairs themselves getting damaged;)
Thankfully, some people are starting to vote with their wallets buy buying almost exclusively from places that offer customer service that's far above and beyond most manufacturers' warranties... Thomann and Amazon, for instance.
On the other hand, this has the unfortunate side-effect of killing off small retailers.:(
"Ditto with laptops - if the battery lasts 3 years, that's good enough. If the laptop still works, they'll just treat it as a computer without a battery. I know of a lot of people who run laptops with dead batteries. And no, they won't buy a replacement - even if they can buy it. Spending $50 to buy a battery for a computer now worth $50 on Craigslist?"
Have you seen what a decent 3 year old laptop costs used these days? MacBook Pros or Thinkpads from 3 years ago still fetch a few hundred € or $... being able to buy a used Thinkpad in good condition for 400€ and pop in a new battery for 70€ is awesome...
Now, what the european consumer advocacy groups say is that Apple misleads the already (through the “Liability for defects” EU Directive) fine protected consumer into believing they wouldn't be protected after 12 months without buying Apple Care. If people are very stupid, and often they are, this could very well be the case.
Confusing Warranty (Garantie) and the EU mandated "Gewährleistung" (what you referred to as "Mangelhaftung") is actually quite a common mistake. You should check out a few European consumer electronics forums - on the German ones that I frequent, most people who join to ask questions about their dead electronics don't know the difference between the two. I sure as hell didn't until I actually needed to use a warranty in Germany for the first time...
Ah right... And I just got your part about the screen background... I'm supposing you meant the lockscreen wallpaper. I still have some room on my lockscreen, so that's actually a great idea:-)
Oh sorry, you just sounded a bit clueless... my mistake:D
I've also started keeping a shortcut to a QR Code (saved as an image file) on my Nexus - when someone with a smartphone asks for my info, I can pull it up right from my lock screen with a single tap (takes about a second - literally)... then they can scan it directly off my phone's display - that keeps the amount of scanned-once-thrown-away business cards low. Just in case you're looking for more ideas;)
So... why don't you just go generate a vCard QR code (type "QR Code Generator" into your favorite search engine) and then have that added to your business cards?
And even if that thing were for some reason not to work, I'm sure you could just rip out the NAND chips and copy/data/ off with a reader of some kind - it's pretty unlikely that this would be out of reach for the government.
I wonder if they've bothered to check for root and a custom ROM... it may be as simple as booting the phone into an already installed custom recovery and just copying the files off using ADB and a MicroUSB cable.
Interesting, even the first generation Snapdragon in my old Desire renders Flash Video smoothly... Sounds like Tegra might have a few driver issues...?
Depends. I tried Ubuntu 11.10 64bit a few days ago, and it's quite a bit slower than Win7 64bit on my hardware (Core2Duo, 8GB RAM) :(

VPN is always an option too... and one that's usually easier to set up with home routers that support it actively :)
Hmmm, which software issues are you still having?

Of course it's free... for non-commercial use. Good enough for me...
Hmmm, off the top of my head, I'd guess you need more RAM. You might be swapping...

And most importantly - it's blazing fast.
Awesome. Maybe I'll see if I ccn scrounge together two cells or so... 180Wh should be plenty for me. Thanks for the great idea :-)
Okay, $600 is a bit steep for me... but just out of curiosity: How'd you wire them up? Did you put them in a special housing or just use duct tape? :D

And even on that, you can probably replace the battery without too much hassle when it stars losing big chunks of capacity, right?

Any custom firmware that comes with a modified hosts file, I'd assume...
You can also just root the handset and modify the hosts file yourself. Or download "Adfree" from the market and have it done automatically.

Okay, now I'm the clueless one... how exactly do feature phones read QR codes?

Or something entirely new?
