Indeed. We watched funds get squandered in a Northern California district once. AFAIK they're still putting the same $20M bond request on the ballot and every year it's been shot down for maybe the last 10. People remember this sort of thing, and they don't let it happen again for a long time.
My school (University of Advancing Technology) did this 2 years ago (google for UAT Near Space). Not sure why NASA would be surprised it could be done on the cheap.
The more publicized someone can get a product, the better.
And the more controversial the product, the more that the people want to see what's up with it. Bam! Sales!
And that's the American Way.
Well, the effectiveness of this "intentional leak" can be measured in my response. I was going to buy the game. Now I am not.
I liked how the leaky person took no effort to hide himself from the screen glare induced reflection making him pretty easily identifiable. I hope he didn't work directly for blizzard...
However what is at issue here is what if you walk up to your neighbor and say "Hey don't you think maybe you should have a door on that house? Someone could get in you know..." He then sends you the bill for the door, lock, security bars, and exterior gate.
I like the mission statement of the Pirate Party. I will be watching this favorably. I expect their philosophy and full plank would flow in logical progression from their already stated goals. If it is well thought out it will not philosophically contradict itself (like the parties that currently exist do - repeatedly). If that is the case, this is a party that might contain individuals for whom I could vote.
I think it is time there was a party in the United States that ran under a unified philosophical approach instead of broad spectrum polling data in their target demographic markets.
Will it happen? Only time will tell. The Hegel/Marx spiral continues to march toward inexorable disintegration.
To think that a mad scientist from the bayou could build a personal army of crocodile-men! We should be thankful this representative has the bigger picture in mind!
This is way more important than better levees and surf breaks!
I think they are headed the wrong direction with this.
Evolutionary theory is vastly unimportant compared to a lack of Scientific Method. I see the requirement of showing weaknesses in Darwinian Evolution as forcing the employment of Scientific Method on difficult, emotion laden, and controversial issues. Beating the method into young impressionable skulls is far more important than whether they believe in creation by amoeba or creation by God. Teach them to think, don't tell them what to believe.
Maybe I'm getting old, but we used to use a nifty thing called uuencode back in the usenet days. You can send any file you like via a text-only medium. I don't know of any implementation that will automatically decode it and post to a blog for you, but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to create with the proper skill set... or a buddy on the other side to decode and post it for you.
I once had a customer call and inform me that his monitor must be infected with a virus, because every computer in his office he plugged the monitor into became infected.
Despite all assurances to the contrary I was unable to convince him of the (more likely correct) alternative explanations.
Apple's DRM satisfies the music industry's insistence on some sort of "lock" on their music, however, should one desire to use their music in any other format, you just burn it to CD, and rip it into whatever format you desire, and you never even violate a term of use. All you need is a CD burner and less than $.20 of media.
DRM is bad, but Apple's iTunes Music DRM is IMO done right.
OK amendment to my comment. The/. linked article is dated February 2, '08 and says they should be going into production in the next week as of that date - "going into production" != shipping.
Okay I have to admit this is beginning to fall into the "I will believe it when I see it" category. Yes yes I know it's POSSIBLE, and definitely DOABLE, but it's never been done and honestly there'd be a HUGE... uh yea... H U G E ! run on these things if they work as advertised. That said I hit every link I could find to get more info.
So far I'm coming up dry. The article/. links to says OCZ's going to be shipping the product "next week"... the article is dated March 1 '08, that means... March 7 shipping to stores. I can't find reference to this product in ANY RETAILER MAJOR OR MINOR. There is no preorder option because as far as I can tell according to the retailers this product does not exist.
I am concerned about a hoax here.
Gamestop: Nada. Nothing OCZ NIA or OCZ Neural.
Amazon: Nothing useful. Some irrelevant books when searching for OCZ Nia. Less relevant results when refining the search.
OCZ Technologies: Web site makes exactly one mention http://www.ocztechnology.com/aboutocz/press/2008/262 scroll down.
-- Device not listed under products.
Fry's Electronics: Zip.
Looks to me like they aren't shipping anything to anyone retail. I'm begging someone to prove me wrong here, because it doesn't look like we'll be getting this technology in our hands inside the next couple weeks... or even the next few months.

I want to be wrong.

I'm no expert on notebook computers being a gamer they are all prohibitively expensive IMO.
Mobile "devices" though... what you're describing you want in a phone pretty much is summed up in a Helio Ocean IMO... it does email, GPS, IMs, video (with built-in spotlight), camera (with flash), acceptable battery life, etc... it's no dSLR but it's got an OK digital camera that can double as a video camera. Not cinema quality but not bad for something that has a full keyboard and fits in your pocket. The device also works pretty much all over the world -- even in Japan (where cell phones from anywhere else don't usually work). And while you're at it you've got internet browsing and if you're bored, YouTube Mobile.
Hope that helps you a little.

So wait, you're in the hole
"... the district faces a $640 million shortfall and some schools persistently rank among the nation's lowest performing."
and you want to build
"With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation's most expensive public school ever."
to what... teach your students what NOT to do when you're out of money?

Leaking IP is bad behavior too.

Pick some conventions that fit your interests and head there. Make contacts and follow up. Never know what could happen.

Imagine the ire of an entire new species at the implications of that.

This begs to wonder what precisely they are planning to do with all that underutilized IP they are amassing...

Lets get rid of that clunky old gas tax in favor of tracking every vehicle in the state's mileage by a state mandated GPS tracking device!
It's a tax collection device not a way to keep tabs on our citizens we swear!

... Ineffective, yes. Unreasonable... no.

The Telcos would surely shoot down any national free internet out of self preservation.
OTOH free IP telephony is one heck of a competition booster.

They used public monies to develop those patents, they should release the pattented material to the public domain! -D
Well one answer is to make sure we don't vote these people back into office. The authors of the bill are:
Senators
Patrick J. Leahy
Arlen Specter
Evan Bayh
George V. Voinovich
Dianne Feinstein
John Cornyn
Be careful whom you vote for. They may make laws you don't like.

Finally an appropriate use of copyright law! Way to go man. Glad to see a photographer get his due.
