The reason DirectX dominates so thoroughly is because it's the complete package, but at the very least we (you, they, whatever) can start catching up in the sound arena w/ OpenAL.

Java3D was a fucking nightmare to use, I'm glad they're finally getting w/ the program and beefing it up ^^v
If he's stupid enough to ask slashdot for legal advice, maybe we should tell him *NOT* to get a laywer, then sit back and laugh. (pass the popcorn plz)
I'm not quite sure you grok zipcar. It's for people like me who think public transportation is my best friend, but when we have to go somewhere where the bus or train doesn't go, it's a godsend. There's only 2 zipcars on campus (~600 dorming out of 1600? someone fact check me >_<), but before my friends graduated, they would take them pretty much anytime they had a job interview. The cars are parked along side everything else, except they have 2 reserved parking slots, so the system doesn't require any new parking spaces built. It doesn't affect private drivers that much and it makes a huge difference to people who can't afford to lease n pay insurance at the same time. (in NJ, they have a "mandatory insurance" racket, so they just jack up prices whenever they damn well feel like it)
Hoboken, NJ has one as well, it took forever to build and I don't hear anyone talking about it, but it's still a cool concept. Only dropped cars a couple of times too. (much less than 0.01% error given how often it pushes n pulls cars...)
If you don't like it, why don't you be an entrepeneur and code it yourself or take advantage of consumer choice in a free market and switch operating systems?
Uh, when there was a draft, rich people got out of it easily, or haven't you been paying attention to our current administration? How is that possibly any better, other than giving those bastards the "nod nod wink wink" they need to shoot down accusations of class warfare?
Quick question, all those people who are too apathetic to vote and who didn't vote in the last few elections because "there's no difference between a Democrat and a Republican", can we get them to go first? Please?
Ooh Ooh, even better, how about we get all the people who were in favor of invading Iraq to go first?
GODDAMMIT, you're ruining it for us! It would have been too much for them to say "we haxx0red their b0x and look what we found!" No, they had to go and tell SCO how they did it. Now what're the odds we will ever get juicy gossip like this again?
I'd like to disagree w/ you because all artificial intelligence slash computer vision stuff is based on context. RFID tags provide very helpful context clues. They'll be used hand-in-hand w/ vision algorithms, not be replaced by them.
Semi prior art: They discussed this in that slashdot story about Chernobyl melting down. Basically the modern way to do audio alarms is to have a chirp or a beep happen when packets of a certain protocol come down the wire, and when you have silence on a certain sound, you can guess that the service has malfunctioned.
On 1st St. in Union City, NJ is a horrible horrible 4 way intersection that's absolute madness for anyone trying to navigate it. The crosswalk buttons will either make a 4-way red light for 15 seconds or cycle who gets a green light. It does this immediately, so it's always gratifying to know that my dinky home town kicks more ass than NYC.
The reason we didn't care about North Vietnam's human rights violations is because we weren't the ones committing them. We were, however, paying oodles of tax dollars so we could violate the human rights of millions of Vietnamese. Why? The Gulf of Tonkin incident was faked, we overthrew more southeast Asian countries than the communists did. Why?
The United States is held to a different standard than other countries because we're better than "they" are. Our ideals are grand. The only way we can instill strong liberal values (the same values which make America great) in China is to lead by example. If the United States ratified Kyoto and made it law, other countries would sign on w/out hesitation. If the United States signed onto the ICC, other countries would do so w/out reservation. And in either case, if they didn't, it wouldn't matter because we would be holding the moral high ground.
Russia's economy has been bought out by foreign investors, milked for what little it was worth, and tossed aside. No one has the balls to implement the reforms that will bring the country back to glory over the long term and Chechnya's quite a costly endeavor for them (kinda like Iraq for us, except they don't have China n Japan lining up to buy their treasury notes).
What does all this mean? They haven't forgotten what it means to be a democracy, but they do remember that they had access to bread when the Soviet Union was around...

I think I trust Krugman just a tad bit more than some free market zealot, thanks.

Is Dell still using prison labor to assemble their goods?

haha, owned ^^;; lemme check my notes...
Look up the using statement when you're in C#.

Unless you made a shitload of money off of invading Afghanistan and Iraq, then no, you are not part of "them" aka the government.
Not to disagree w/ you or anything, but remember what happened to that Kuro5hin guy? Be careful who you express negative fantasies about...
If a nation is incapable of mustering enough volunteers to protect itself, that nation may not deserve to stand.

A minor problem is that Friedman is full of shit, but who needs facts when you've got a newspaper to sell?

Democracy is fucked. Even w/ paper ballots, look!
