1998 - 2nd 1999 - Honorable Mention 2000 - 8th 2001 - They sent a fucking CS student to do what an EE and an ME student were supposed to do, the dumb fuck didn't even pressurize the fucking sub, so when he put it in the water it went *blubblubblub* to the bottom of water. 2002 - We're not even listed.
I'm glad that the navy is using Win98 so that we can make fun of them, but goddammit, I'm still crying at our school's inability to comprehend that the students might honestly be more interested in working on something cool than something profitable.
The ridiculous number of webcomics that miss their published schedule and make no attempt to make up for it YET still ask for donations reminds me alot of Dragon Tails which, I believe, hasn't missed an update (daily) in 3 years, and regularly (maybe once a month?) provides slashdot inspired jokes.
If not, I strongly recommend Koenig & Moo's Accelerated C++. They write a column for C Users Journal. I knew C++ when I read it, and it completely flipped things around for me.
Behind the curve on.NET? Still haven't figured out COM? O'Reilly has a book called Learning DCOM by Thai. I used to need it alot, but it might still be useful to ya'll.
Don't get me wrong. I absolutely HATE Perl. But when I'm forced by circumstance, I use Programming Perl, 3rd Ed. by Wall, Christiansen & Orwant.
Programming C# by Liberty is the only C# book I've read. I recommend thumbing through it only when you have the.NET docs without mouse's reach.
Don't known DirectX and learning DirectX 9 isn't a priority? I wholeheartedly recommend Programming Role Playing Games w/ DirectX by Adams.
There's more. But these are the books I've used most often since January of this year...
I cannot disagree with you or IEEE-USA, what I'm upset about is that no one told me. So now instead of angrily going "rabble rabble" with everyone else, I have to send a snail mail that (thanks to Anthrax checking) won't hit Congress for another month or so.
235,000 software engineers got together and slashdot didn't cover it? Who dropped the fucking ball here?!
IEEE-USA? Well bully for them! Did all 235,000 members send in their support or did a majority vote on this or did the publicity arm send this out on behalf of those people who are members?
Locate the routines in the C library that do not force you to explicitly specify the size of the buffer that you are copying (or autoallocate the buffer for you) and remove them. Dump any apps that don't recompile.
VC++ 7 comes with/Gs switch which kinda sorta does stack smash checking but it comes with caveats.

Anyway, as I said, while I support the conclusion of the article, based on its lack of maturity I wouldn't use it to try to convert existing MFC programmers.
As an MFC programmer who has discovered the glory of WinForms, lemme tell you: if we're not getting paid for it, we don't need any convincing to move from MFC to greener pastures.
My parents day in and day out wonder why I don't turn on the A/C in my room. I tell them that if you don't try to freeze yourself indoors, then when you go outdoors the heat won't seem so unbearable. But they keep on asking why I do it, as if my explanation isn't good enough. So (on those rare occasions when family members are home together) while everyone is complaining about how hot it is, I'm lounging, because it doesn't bother me.
Granted, the 80-90F we're getting in Jersey probably isn't remotely as bad as what those guys are getting South & West of us, but hey.

Now tell us about the scariest, most unbelievable patent application you've ever seen.

Does that mean Thinkgeek will be selling all the stuff? Or do they have different stuff from the previously available stuff? So anxious!
I checked all links, where is the Thinkgeek related stuff?
It's illegal to be homeless in New York City.
Don't believe me? Want to mod me down? Go ahead, just don't try to not have a job or a home or any money in NY, otherwise they'll throw you in jail.

How does it stay together? Why does it not succumb to entropy?
We tell users to read BOFH so they appreciate how helpful their current sysadmin is! Great idea...

Snail mail and phone calls are the only things taken seriously.
Elected officials who aren't visibly doing anything to prevent constituents from losing jobs will not stay in office very long.
It's not that I want H1B holders booted, I just want them to not be treated as slaves... Maybe that way the rest of us won't be treated as disposable.
I thought the Geneva Convention specifically outlawed the use of lasers to blind people?

You can tell he doesn't give a shit about Linux, he just threw it in there so as to get on the front page instead of on the side.
I use and recommend OmlettePad EX, because I wrote it myself.
Think of all the things your current editor does that are really cool, and chances are, OmlettePad EX doesn't have them.

If you're going for windows programming at all, of course you need a few sites:

I recently discovered another site which has saved me alot of trouble, though I doubt a linuxweenie would ever need it: WinForms FAQ

I would like to point out that if the workers owned the means of production, this wouldn't have happened.
