I laughed when I saw 1966. It's a typo, the article is from 1996. Duh.
Anyway, I'm reminded of something from the currently ongoing bnetd fiasco: The EFF linked to a Penny Arcade comic on the subject. Penny Arcade doesn't agree with the EFF and said, "Instead of linking to the comic, please link to the rant." One guy from the EFF said, "OK" and removed the link, then an hour later the link was back and an email arrived saying "Linking's perfectly legal, we'll do as we like." So PA changed the target of the URL to some messed up thing involving dogs and some old guy. Very amusing.
Moral: if you don't want someone linking to you, don't raise a fuss, just mess with your referrer permissions and all.
is a sequel to Blade Runner. Then on all the buildings we can put interactive advertisements for these hypothetical megacorporations. Bam, instant smackdown.
Open Source any piece of software that they claim to no longer publicly support. Need support for 95? Found a bug in 98? Sorry, you can either fix the problem yourself or upgrade to XP. Your choice. I wouldn't mind that.

1. The anonymous button really is missing. 2. CmdrTaco posted Hemos' email so that's where all the flames will go. 3. Anticipating how Hemos will get back @ CmdrTaco. (Note to Hemos: don't disappoint your loyal fans!)
First they allow patenting math (all software comes from code and all code can be expressed as math) and now they'll patent the use of live animals?! When will this cruelty end!!!
Go to a country. Any country. Go to Canada or Mexico or England. Then read their newspapers. Then bring one of those back here and compare their paper to one of our good old American newspapers. See if even half the stuff they cover is mentioned anywhere in the US. Then come back and tell us how we shouldn't be censoring reality.
On the one hand, I think we need something more devious than that... Put somewhere in the FAQ:
Q: blahblahblahOpen Sourceblahblahblahlegal question? A: Get a fucking lawyer.
On the other appendage, I think Taco & Co. post these questions because of the anecdotes provided in the comments. And since the comments are the most important part of the site, what better way to add value to slashdot than to repeatedly post the variations of the question?
Personally I'm waiting for April 4, so I can be rejected for asking, "Hey, it's been a year since we talked about Game Programming w/ SDL, what's changed since then?"
People using Office 2k & Office XP can still read 97 documents. And other than Access 2k > Access 97, there aren't any important features in 2k & XP to be envious of. Yay Office 97!
I doubt that everyone will have to buy new software though, I'm sure there will be some sort of built in converter.
No, I turned off all that stuff (Office Startup, Indexer, etc.), and I have that Process Thingee from sysinternals.com running so I'm can say with certainty that I know what's running & what isn't.
It's really weird, and annoying, but it's worked on two of the Win98 boxes I've tried it on. (home & work).
Just found this out last night: If you're in Windows 98 and you notice Explorer (the file browser, not the web browser) is crawling on you, remove everything from your My Documents folder to another! Instant (15 minutes later) speedup! Whee!

Well, for everyone complaining about public risk, private profit... DAYUM!

Does that mean Novak will sue Salon? And then slashdot for linking to Salon?

I'm glad that you as a 17 year old are opening your eyes to discover that not everything your history book tells you about how good the U.S. is is true, but for fuck's sake, if you're gonna steal someone else's stuff, give them credit!
Doctrine of Relative Filth is no defense.

Any idea where the input came from?

about Blizzard being the bad guy because they shut down bnetd, YES, it is possible to hate the messenger but enjoy the message.
Just like Louis Farrakhan [sp] and the million man march,
just like the MPAA and LOTR or the Matrix or Tron or SW or whatever,
just like the RIAA and [your favorite band here],
it's perfectly possible and not hypocritical to hate Blizzard and want to fuck them five ways from Friday and still enjoy Warcraft III.
He was quoted out of context, what he meant was that the comments have no financial value. He's down with the community, just like everyone else is.

It looks like BeFS with XML descriptions instead of MIME types. I think.

One time, I taped a TV show using my VCR, and later on, when I played it back, I fast forwarded the ads! I stole the TV show! Mwuahahaha!
