The response could be very telling. From out right resentment and disbelief that it could ever happen to overly enthusiastic acceptance of blatant interference. If someone comes up in the middle with something like: I would advise them on my progress and assign them a meaningful yet redundant task to complete so I could focus on the heavier stuff while still using the additional asset to the fullest advantage. They might be a good choice. You don't want someone who will roll over or refuse help.

The policy may be valid and put in place because they got caught posting their friends shopped pics. However, any "policy" is enforced at the discretion of those in charge. I think the policy is good. Their choice of who to begin enforcing it on is what is interesting.
The military is used to shopping photos. Many of my coworkers have pictures of their sons or daughters with the background removed/replaced. This is supposed to hide their classified location. Not the same as a publicity photo. I don't think that it would have mattered if she wasn't military.

...the people I'd rather be working alongside...

Ask yourself why do you really prefer them. Are they more stable and knowledgeable. Look for those qualities in your applicants. Open your mind to the possibilities. You may find some younger candidates that surprise you. Also you wont be wasting time with irrelevant questions when you should be getting to know your applicants.

Ask: You have a project that is on time but just under deadline. A new technology comes out that could potentially cut development and cost in half. How do you proceed?

Our personal feelings always effect how we perceive words. Whenever I watch Chuck I get a twinge of anxiety when I see the words "Nerd Herd" across the car he drives. If you have the presence of mind to do research it's rarely something more serious. At the very least you'll be better informed when you talk to the doctor. If your in so much pain you can't do anything get to the emergency room.
When I had conjunctivitis I did a bunch of research until I found eyebrite. That and some wet washcloths over my eyes fixed my problem. There are limitations. I do most of my own plumbing. If I have to rent equipment I start asking myself if it would be more cost effective to call a pro. I did blow a small transformer on the A/C one time when I was hooking up the thermostat. I did it by following the directions when my gut told me not to hook that wire up.
What you seem to be getting at is a bigger issue. Should IT professionals be certified like those other professions? Probably but then you enter the minefield of the paper MCSE fiasco.

Their existance was inevitable. What they do with the information is more important. We can't turn back time. Even if we did stop Google someone else would have filled the need.
If we can raise peoples awareness of what is going on without being sensationalistic it is a good thing. I would guess a lot of /.rs already know about this so the book might be a good holiday gift for one of our less tech savy friends or family. Really freak them out.

The management is not very creative thinkers or they would not be managing a call center (arguably). It is far safer to convince them ahead of time to do something they do not understand if you make them understand that your magic will make them look good.
