    The new TPP treaty lets foreign corporations override local laws, if money is at stake. I'm sure we can find some excuse to make a claim, and get the telescope built.

    They (5 eyes countries) already have the ability to tap phones in each others countries, via access to the NSA database where everything is kept. This is just making it legal so they can use it in court.

    On most highways the cars only cover about 20% of the pavement. Unfortunately that's as good as this idea gets. It only makes sense to put solar panels where the cost of the panel is less than the value of the electricity, and roads isn't one of those places (armoured glass is expensive, they get scratched and dirty). Better places: a roof over the road (massive reduction in snow/ice removal costs, you can use cheap solar panels), on house roofs (you can use cheap solar panels), deserts (cheap land, lots of sun, cheap panels).

    It's a good thing the President has legal immunity, or she'd be looking at jail time. Depending on how long the public cares about this, she might need to look at removing that term limit though.

    High speed trading DOES require planning to take advantage of short term swings, full stop. They see what's going to happen and try to get in the path of it so they can siphon off money as it flows past.

    Advertisers need to make their adds useful to the people. Allow people to specify what they want to know about, and have the add company search out deals and stuff that matches. It would be like Google, but automated, working to find products and services you want to buy instead of finding yet another cat picture.

    The Purpose of H1B visas is to depress American workers by forcing them to compete for jobs with the third world. If they had the slightest interest in "Filling gaps" they would be fast tracking immigration for people with needed skills, instead of training foreign workers then sending them home at the end of the contract.

  17. Your car spends most of its time parked. Having "just enough" cars for average usage would reduce the number of cars by 75%. Bury the roads (tunnels) in urban areas and you eliminate almost all hazards while freeing up hundreds of trillions of dollars in real estate to pay for the cars and roads (with power rails to eliminate fossil fuels). Going by pure economics we could ban humans driving cars in about twenty years, for most of the Western World.

    Datamining is basically stealing the change from my couch to get rich. From my point of view, I consider myself justified in stopping this theft. I just can't justify spending lots of money or effort to protect small change.

    The only way you can trust your phone is if there are no security flaws in the code, the software has been security audited by someone with the source code and tools to do the job properly, the hardware has been security audited by someone with the full hardware design and the tools to verify it, and you trust both people not to lie to you.

    The Paris attackers used normal cellphones, and they got away with it. Osama Binladen had couriers using normal cellphones, and he got away with it for many years. We'd probably have had more success on both fronts if they had used good crypto, as it would have stood out from all the noise.

    The baseband in your phone has access to the memory and microphone, and the NSA can serve a secret order to the chip maker to include a backdoor in the baseband. Why would they need to break the encryption?

  22. Standing up to the Government, and Telling people you are standing up to the Government are two very different things. From a business point of view they must be seen to be defending their customers, else their customers will switch to using jailbroken Android phones that have been locked down (can't do that with an Iphone, no source code). Apple is (therefore) the most vulnerable phone maker, they must be seen to take a leadership role or they will die.

    The world doesn't actually require permission to take control of the Internet away from the USA. Just set up your own command and control system and configure all the Internet to use it. Unless America is willing to stand guard over the entire Internet infrastructure (maybe?) the control will be gone.

    The purpose of vouchers is to defund the public school system and divert the money into private schools. It means that nobody will choose to send their kids (money) to the poor neighborhood schools except the poor folk who can't afford the commute. Poor kids will go to poor schools in poor districts, middle class kids will go to good schools in good districts. It's segregation by income.

    The one percenters can't win an election, not enough voters even when half the voters stay home. They require a large block of people who vote as directed, and the religious right provides those voters. So long as the men in charge of their congregation get their quid pro quo, the voters will be directed to keep voting republican forever. Of course this does require the occasional "Christian" act in public, like this bill.
