    But what does your old B/W G3 450mhz box have to do with most of the new line of Macs now? Your old box was upgradeable, the newer Macs are not


    The difference between now and then is that apple has expanded its consumer offerings both upward and downward from the original mid-priced G3 iMac into

    • low cost replacement: mini ($500 and up)
    • low cost all-in-one: eMac ($800 and up)
    • mid-to-high-end consumer(iMac $1300 - $3000)

    The pro and "prosumer" G5 towers start at a few hundred more than the cheapest iMac ($1500). This series is the successor to his old G3. It is the (expandable) mac you should have compared his old G3 to but somehow (deliberately?) ignored.

    It's not like somebody's going to go running Tiger on a Power Mac 9600

    Oh yes they are! If you upgrade the processor to a G3 or better, you can use XPostFacto you can run OS X on ancient powermacs. You can even run Jaguar on a fast PPC 604 with this terrific patch!

    I plan to buy a copy of Tiger and load it onto my hot-rodded Frankenmac 7600 just as soon as it's practical.

    Why not compare it to Countries like India and China. Places with very large populations and a very large land mass. I think it'd be a little more fair than comparing it to countries with a high population density (the majority of Canadia's population is settled within 100 miles or so of the US border
    1. "100 miles or so of the US border..." In other words, most of Canada's population lives in a similar setting to their American cousins, just across the border. Here's a map. Here's an older, but more detailed map
    2. Canada and the USA are both "rich" countries, with similar cultures. Most people in China and India do not have the average American's income or lifestyle.
    3. The urban population density in Canada is only slightly greater than in the US, in other words... it is roughly the same.

    Maybe that's because you live in the USA. The Canadian government issued a formal apology on Sept 22, 1988. A redress settlement was also announced which included individual compensation for all survivors.

    BTW - I am a geek who works in the fire dept of a large Canadian city. Since I'm actually doing the kind of job you speculate about, I'm in a pretty good position to rebut your argument

    No they would not! Designing a good interface is very, very hard and is definitely not a job for dummies. It's iterative. It takes patience to work thru many refactorings of your UI design; and you absolutely need the humility to accept and act on user feedback. You need to understand that your users are much more expert about what works for them than you are. Dummies usually design the interface today.

    Sigh!... One more for the trolls... Yes, the G5 (aka 970) and Athlon64 are 64 bit post-risc processors. Yes, they have quite a lot in common. No, they are NOT basically the same.

    The eMachines unit you mentioned does NOT have a faster CPU. The rule of thumb for comparing clock speeds is:

    1 G4 = 1.2 AMD = 1.6 P4 = 2 Celeron

    So for the base mini

    1.25 G4 = 1.5 AMD = 2.0 P4 = 2.5 Celeron

    And for the faster mini

    1.4 G4 = 1.7 AMD = 2.2 P4 = 2.8 Celeron

    Your example box also does not play DVDs. Also you mentioned the GPU, but didn't say what it was. Wouldn't surprise me if the PC's video card robs system memory (that's pretty common on lower end PCs)

    No support for a folder of applications as a single widget on the dock.

    That would be handy, though perhaps LaunchBar would cover it?

    If that's all you want, an even simpler solution is to drag the Applications folder into the dock (right hand side). I've done the same with my Home folder... very handy!

    You don't happen to have old hardware around?

    The latest version of OS X runs great on my Powermac 7600 (early 1996), thanks to a G3 upgrade and XPostFacto. As long as you have a decent amount of memory, you'll have few problems. 512mb of ram seems to be the "sweet spot"

    That's a really bad example. Almost every mouse these days is has a clickable scroll wheel (a middle button), which does this in one click.

    You could be right, which may be why apple doesn't bundle a mouse and kbd with the cpu. You don't need to buy Apple's mouse, you can install any USB mouse/keyboard you like (or use a $2 PS2 to USB adapter).

    BTW - I am writing this on my macintosh using all the features of a multibutton/scroll wheel mouse. The mac is at home and I am accessing the machine from work using VNC over an SSH tunnel.

    Command-click (alt-click with PC keyboard) does this on most mac browsers and is MUCH faster than a right-click, because you don't have to (1) wait for a menu to pop up and then (2) select the item from the menu. It takes one "beat" instead of three

    1. The wave will travel up the Delaware River! There's a big fat bay at the bottom of that river, which funnel and amplify the wave, much like what happens in the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world. In other words, the tsunami could be taller in Philly, than at the coast!
    2. Look at a map. Philly is more like 40-50km inland, not 100km. Furthermore, it sits in a big fat river valley, well below the surrounding land
    3. The 20km figure was the average distance the wave will travel and not the furthest point of penetration

    I use this Hi-Fi FM radio transmitter to send music to the various radios in my home, or to a boom box when I'm out working in the yard. The same manufacturer also makes a nice USB powered xmitter

    I gave you a recent example. I said that you are ignorant because if you had known about the country right next door recently and publicly punishing it's military, you obviously wouldn't have written what you did (or were you counting on the ignorance of your fellow citizens?)

    Count your blessings. A few years ago my 1975 Alfa Romeo Spider broke down in St. Cloud, Minnisota. The verdict was a cracked bell housing. The amazing thing was that one of the first people I talked to had pretty much grown up hanging around his parent's auto junk yard. He found a guy in Wisconsin that had the part... but I had to buy the transmission that came with it... for only $125! That's much less than the cost of one USED gear, let alone a bell housing and transmission! On top of that, St. Cloud is a college town and I was "adopted" by students who dragged me off to a keg party at some frat house. Sometimes the worst adventures finish up rather well

    That's a bit dear! I picked up a g3/300 desktop (with scanner and 320mb of ram) for $200 CDN ($160 US, £80 GBP). Admittedly it was a private sale, but if you look here, you'll find a retailer selling used macs at similar prices.

    OTOH - The Effect (noun: influence) of the ignorant substitution of inappropriate words Affects (verb: to influence) your ability to write clearly. Learn to the difference between english vowels, or you'll be condemned to confuse a cat with a cot (or Al with an eel)
