Not saying that what you experience isnt real, but having a brand new video card a few years ago with coil whine, i learned a lot about it. It is VERY noticiable. To everyone. I used to game at night and my wife said the noise was keeping her awake. With headphones on, it wasnt bothering me and the card itself was fine. It was a high pitched whine which everyone could hear easily. It started about a month after i purchased this video card. I had to RMA it, but the successive cards i recieved back all had different problems. After about the 4th RMA, it got to the point that I was paying more in shipping than it would cost to just get a new damn video card. So thats what I did. Never buy PNY anything is the moral of the story!
Coil whine, and being sensitive to electronics noises are two very different things. The latter being very detectable by everyone. I listened to the noise in the "article" and it sounds more like a feedback from a hot mic coming out the speaker or something like that, than what i experienced as coil whine. But who knows, smaller coils, different sound maybe.
"she sent a video of herself having sex to some friends"
How about don't use your real name online? Just because everyone in the world seems to have abandoned that concept in the last 15 years doesn't make it any less important, or relevant.
This is not a problem for the internet, its a problem of novice internet users emailing sex tapes around. I would have some sympathy if she was hacked, but she clearly brought this on herself. We all make mistakes, but we don't all make fools of our self online using our real information. That's a fairly specific choice she made. It may not have been thought through, but let that be a lesson to everyone who decides emailing a sex tape around is a good idea.
Ha! reminds me of my mom (who came of age in the 60s) when i was a kid:
"hate is a very strong word"
shes right though, my mom, not the teacher. I assume the teacher meant something similar though. Kids (and people in general) are always saying they "hate" everything when really they just mean dislike. Hate is a much stronger word and children should be taught the difference.
I dislike eating fish. I hate slavery. There is nothing wrong with children being taught to use language correctly.
Sorry, which country is true capitalism? All i see around here are state sponsored monopolies, global corporations who make their own rules, the military industrial complex and lobbyists.
If you live in the west, and probably everywhere else, you live in corporatism, not capitalism.
The grand parent was saying that the current corporate culture of profit driven "capitalism" is akin to slavery with its destruction of the individual, and the race to the bottom. Maybe slavery got us computers and all that, but it also built the pyramids. The ends don't necessarily justify the means, and certainly aren't the only way to go about doing things. I fail to see your point. That computers wouldn't have been invented if not for monopolies? If you know the history of technology that is not what happened. In fact its the reverse. Small companies like microsoft defeating huge behemoths like IBM. (Which then of course became just as ruthless as the companies they successfully usurped, starting the cycle all over again)
For me though the problem is that I hate Google more than Apple and refuse to be either companies bitch.
Is that attitude making you happy? Has it ever?
Yup! Feature phones rock.
Pros: - not a zombie - not being tracked everywhere i go via passive bluetooth, "applications", wireless, or simply IMEI - having a week of standby battery time at least - phone boots in 30 seconds max - can say to people "oh sorry my phone doesn't text!" and then not have to be pulled into asinine one word per message SMS conversations - never tempted to text and drive or view social media while driving - don't feel listless and depressed when the battery runs low (which as i understand it, happens daily) - not a brainwashed zombie who can't sit and think for 2 minutes without getting bored and whipping out their phone
Cons: - Don't have the ability to work when not at work. (hey wait a minute, thats not a con!) - eventually the networks will not support my phone any longer, which makes me sad. - have to plan what I'm doing outside the house BEFORE i go outside. (seeing as i have been doing that for 30 years prior to celphones arrival, its not really a problem for me)
What the heck are you talking about? Skylake is a perfectly fine architecture. When it came out, i too did a comparison with skylake and haswell judging skylake to be the better chip. Using DDR4 and also the ability to do m2 SSDs @ x4 speeds were the two deal breakers for me.
Sure you can get a 2600k that runs circles around lots of later gen chips, but a 6700k will own it and with the extra features and better power consumption (and less heat) skylake is the one to buy. Especially since the 4790k and the 6700k are like a 50 dollar difference in price. Might as well go for all the new chipset features and the satisfaction of not paying premium prices for last years architecture!
On the mac side of things, yes the last few releases were really unstable. However i think they fixed all the stability problems in the latest el capitan release. I dont use osx personally, but my users stopped complaining about stability problems when we went to el cap.
Well one could argue its already happened to skype. But I think the old adage applies, never attribute to malice what can be explained by plain old incompetence.
Still I would believe it in a second if some concrete evidence came out.
" (I'm from Canada".... " Except this time you guys get a chance to buy a house."
What canada do you live in that doesn't have an insane, through the roof, bubbled property market?
No one under 40 can afford a house in canada. Heck even most gen-xers would have had to buy in around 2008 or so to get even a moderately affordable townhouse!
In the major cities (toronto, vancouver) under 40s can't even afford condos anymore! Its all rich foreigners and investors now, and the rental market is being squeezed hard. Hard to find a 2 bedroom in the lowermainland for under 1800 now adays...
"If you couldn't justifying the technical improvements of Windows 10 over Windows 7 what made you think that a small service pack would change that?"
People are still hoping that there will be one killer feature that will make it worthwhile to "upgrade". At work i have a surface so i have to use win10. Windows 10 features that I like are 1) better multi monitor support 2) better direct access VPN client 3) wireless display sharing is cool
Other than that, I really don't see a need for anyone to upgrade. You have a boatload of crap to deal with over 7 and yes as time goes on, the problems with windows 10 keep adding up. As others have mentioned, windows 10 machines frequently get into a state where you have to blow away a user completely to fix it. Sometimes even the whole machine. Something gets corrupted in the microsoft store, and even if you don't use it, it can create negative effects everywhere.
Patching in the corporate environment is a nightmare now, as each "patch" is actually a brand new operating system. I still haven't got things to go smooth between versions yet and expect another week of fighting before this new edition will image to workstations properly.
i dont care so much about telemetry. The main problems I have are this rapid feature release cycle ( 2 major updates a year is far too fast), and its various ways that it screws up and requires time to be rebuilt. Another huge annoyance is that they got rid of the file settings and transfer wizard, which has been a godsend since XP in terms of giving people the exact same environment that they started out with before i came in and switched the computer, or the hdd or whatever. Now I have to say "unfortunately we cant copy your profile cleanly anymore, so you have to start fresh", then i have to hand copy bookmarks back in chrome, desktop items, etc. Real annoying and like everythign else bad about windows 10, i blame the new features for causing these sorts of problems: the store and cortana. They couldn't get file and transfer settings wizard working reliably with these new features, so they dropped it as opposed to fixing it.
Oh and the number one reason i will never go to windows 10 on my home PC is the way in which it was pushed out. I lost all resepect for microsoft when they used windows update to deliver and trick people into installing windows 10. So I am morally opposed to installing it now because of the abuse of a great patch system that was windows update. Now it can no longer be trusted, and that is the real long term damage that they have done to their reputation. Abuse of their position.
""Unlimited" should always be understood to include "but don't be a dick"."
So being "a dick" now is using a paid for service as advertised? ISPs should have no trouble delivering their advertised speeds 24x7 and if you paid for "unlimited" you should be able to max out that connection 100% of the time. Companies cant just redefine words and then shame or guilt people into their "marketing speak" basterdization of basic english words.
There are truth in advertising laws for a reason. This is straight up false advertising / fraud on the part of that ISP.
How hard is it for them to say "100gb a month plan" instead of unlimited? All ISPs give actual rates in canada that I am aware of. eg http://www.shaw.ca/internet/pl... Take a look, you can clearly see all the caps you get at every tier. But maybe our consumer protection laws are stronger than yours, I don't know.
As they always say on the bus ads: Creativity is subjective, but the truth isn't.
"You can buy a NES for $20 pretty much everywhere"
Im not sure if thats true anymore. It was certainly true when they were sitting in water, rusting at peoples garage sales in the 90s and you couldnt give them away. However time, even a short amount like 20 years, does funny things.
On craigslist, a bare bones NES console seems to go for $60+ with no games.
i was at a retro gaming convention recently and the average price was about $100 for a NES console (controllers extra). A BNIB boxed one i saw selling for $900, but that was probably just for show.
NES games were going for at least $10-20 each. With some titles over a hundred dollars. There is a whole retro gaming scene that loves consoles! and at the retro gaming con that i went to there were at least a hundred tables of people selling old NES games. The con was packed, and many people had nes games and consoles under their arms as they left. I personally saw people paying $100 myself no problem plus $20 bucks for a nes controller or two.
Some people there were old 30-40 somethings like myself who owned a NES back in the 80s, but many more were 10-25 years old, and they were the ones who had no problem plunking down $100 bucks for a NES.
It was all a bit surreal.. I do wonder what this announcement will do to the retro gaming market. One of the big problems is finding CRT monitors for the light guns and era specific eccentricities (RF adaptors etc). I guess they didnt get duck hunt running on this thing...
Even if he landed completely dry, you're talking a high risk of hypothermia dressed that way in November navigating miles of wilderness.
Around the seattle area, november might be +5 degrees, even could be as high as +10. It very rarely would drop below -5. And if it was a dry night, he would have no problem surviving i would think.
You only really *need* to use a parking brake when you are on a hill (or your car is stupidly designed and keeps trying to kill you). There is absolutely nothing wrong with not using the parking brake.
Yes, on many cars with drum brakes, the parking brake will adjust the drums, so it is good to use it occasionally, but I have driven off with the parking brake on more times than it has saved my car from rolling off, so i don't use it. I learned to drive not using it, my dad never used it, so I don't. I come from a very flat city, with barely any hills, so growing up there was no reason.
If you are parking on a hill, to prevent the transmission from clunking when you put it into drive, you should have the parking brake on. But to say people "dont know how to handle a car properly" if they dont use their parking brake every time they park is hyperbole.
Don't you think that maybe that makes you more prone to seeing problems where none exist? Like a solider who comes back from the war and sees explosive devices everywhere.
I leave my cel phone at home unless I am doing a craigslist deal or actually have a reason to take it with me when i leave the house.
If I'm out doing something non phone related, then why would i need to carry a phone? This whole "i need to see my phone every 5 minutes" is still a rather new thing in the last 5 years or so and I havent really been tricked into that yet. To me, a phone means work and I think it will evolve to a point where only the poor carry their phones around with them all the time. Rich people will be phone free and have others answer all their calls for them. Because at the end of the day, phones to me have always equaled increased stress.
Maybe its all those on-call positions I used to take... who knows, but i really don't care for phones that much. If its serving me then fine, but the way people treat them now adays, they are simply slaves to the phone, or addicts, and I want to be neither of those things.
Also please provide a stat for the entire world, not just america. You people have brutalized your black citizens so much its really no wonder they want to kill you. The system is rigged against them.
I doubt your statistic holds true in canada or the UK or other civilized countries with proper social safety nets.
America was built by racists and slave labour. One black president doesn't change 400 years of history.
How nice for you that your wife is the most basic of users. She would probably be fine with a tablet by the sounds of it.
My wife needs microsoft office applications for compatibility with her students and colleagues. Can i point and click install that? Is it as easy to crack on linux as windows (autoKMS).
My wife uses quickbooks to do some accounting for some companies. Has linux started supporting quickbooks now?
And please don't say "just run wine". Number 1, it costs money and 2 is an emulator, so is bound to have issues. I don't have time to hunt down obscure issues, post to forums and beg developers for fixes. That is what i do in my regular 9-5 job so sure as shit i dont want to be wasting my time at home doing that.
Im so sick of people saying "just move to linux dummy!" because its not that fucking simple for normal people to do that!!! I love linux, i run linux servers, but linux on the desktop does not work for everyone!!!!!!!!!!
Windows 7 works fine. The proper solution here is to block updates with GWX control panel and for microsoft to stop fucking around with current windows 7 users who are happy to wait till 2021 to upgrade. Your "move to linux" post is doing nothing but legitimizing microsofts behaviour for linux's gain. Basically kicking people when they are down to try and increase your own operating systems market share.
This is a false claim. I manage a few networks and as long as you have a WSUS server (which any company with more than 10 machines should have, otherwise you are wasting bandwidth at the very least) you will not get any forced upgrade. Well not yet.
The other thing I did to make double sure is i put the GWX control panel in our windows 7 image. So any new computer is inoculated. The only time i see that kind of thing is if its a non domain joined computer, which is to be expected sadly.
Your being funny but is it? Windows 10 has many problems. They want to update the whole OS every 6 months and shit always ends up breaking, reset your file permissions and auto install crappy applications from their store. Its harder to run with UAC off, and there is tonnes of useless web integration at all levels. File permissions probably pisses me off the most, and the loss of the file settings and transfer wizard, with no replacement, which you could still kind of use in win8.
I haven't really found anything that windows 10 does better than windows 8 except direct access vpns. And only "direct access" vpns, because they broke the normal VPN interface in windows 10.
I find that when i have to fix a windows 8 laptop, i am actually nostalgic for the OS. After installing classic start of course.
Disclaimer is that neither is better than windows 7 which is what i use at home. But I also made a conscious effort not to upgrade my wifes laptop from 8 to 10 because of all the problems we have at work with it.
This speaker creates excellent echos? no. This speaker is some kind of voice recognition technology like google voice and siri? maybe.
It would be nice if someone could explain wtf this thing is and why i should care that its now available in website form. Article and summary are identically hollow.
People cant see what its capable of. Fine, but unless you have an amazon account you cant summarize it either? we have to "see" it, it is so great that it cannot possibly be put into words?
I was thinking that repair of the machines would be safe till i realized that they can probably create other machines to repair the primary machines.:(
I guess we really are doomed. It's interesting to think about. An advanced machine making and consuming its own art, science, literature. I guess the main reason this won't happen is because people will not let it happen. But if it happens by accident, or because of some profit motive, then it could be very dystopian indeed! These philosophical concerns is what scifi was made to address!
Shame that her company is not living up to the hype, but it does say that they were reluctant to reveal any trade secrets about their device all along. Worth the read for some background on theranos (the company she founded when she was 19)
Not saying that what you experience isnt real, but having a brand new video card a few years ago with coil whine, i learned a lot about it. It is VERY noticiable. To everyone. Less tangible like the collective will of all your cells working for survival? That I can get behind.
You exist because your cells want you to exist and consciousness is just a byproduct of that collective, the collective of cells.

Fine, but unless you have an amazon account you cant summarize it either? we have to "see" it, it is so great that it cannot possibly be put into words?
but can it end civilization?
I was thinking that repair of the machines would be safe till i realized that they can probably create other machines to repair the primary machines. :(
I guess we really are doomed.
Just was recently reading a great profile of her as the "healthcare industries steve jobs", becuase of her secrecy and wardrobe.

Shame that her company is not living up to the hype, but it does say that they were reluctant to reveal any trade secrets about their device all along. Worth the read for some background on theranos (the company she founded when she was 19)
