I could get behind smart voice recognition (i loved via voice back in the day), however the fact that it records everything youre saying all the time, and sends that data out to the internet, is extremely creepy! I don't know how people get around that mentally.

Only problem i ever had is that it constantly prompts you to install the search bar for ddg. But i blame this on not accepting permanent cookies or noscript usage or some combination of the two. Google is even worse at trying to get you using chrome and the toolbars and all that, its beyond intrusive with them...

If they get better image search, i would never have to use google.

My advice? Run! The FBI surely has enough resources to get IP address for skype users, and reddit gives up their users at the drop of a hat. The FBI can easily take possession of his computer equipment with this kind of evidence. I doubt he was that careful and everything is tight and anonymous at the layer 3 level.

I'll give you that multi monitor features are vastly improved (win10 on presentation laptops is a must), however win7 is still speedier, more responsive and less crash prone than windows 10 on the same hardware. I dont care how much more efficiently my memory is managed when i have to restart every other day, and have unblockable cumulative updates auto install and auto break certain things every 6 months.

That my ssd wears down in 50 years instead of 30... well its nice, but its not worth the costs that are associated with windows 10. For me those are the broken system of updates, the initial abuse of windows update to trick win7 users into upgrading, the increased frequency of clearly not quality controlled updates and the major stability problems and bugs that every new update introduces.

Then there are the simple daily annoyances. Things like how i cant reconnect a vpn connection without rebooting the computer, or how using REPLACE instead of UPDATE with GPO network drive mappings has a habit of breaking them in certain situations in win10. These are known issues since release, that still havent been fixed.

MS needs to freeze new features, and fix a current release as completely as possible, before throwing more half baked features into the next release. The rapid release cycle is why working with windows 10 is a never ending treadmill of headaches.

At the very least, they desperately need an LTS branch focused on stability of core features above all.

The end result should be that companies are law bound and forced to support IoT devices for ~15 years from the date of manufacture of the device. It should be no different than an auto recall where you receive a letter in the mail. You think companies do that out of their own good will? no, they were forced to by law. Why were they forced by law to do that? Because people became enraged and the media hyped up that rage so that laws were passed. The media publicizing these events is completely 100% necessary, if our goal is secure devices and an educated populace. I don't see any other way to combat these new IoT botnets, do you? Your solution of "just ignore them" is fanciful. Doesn't work with any sort of crime, so it won't work for botnets. Linux is awesome on the server, vmware, android.. But because I dont have time to dick around with compatibility problems i run windows 7 because it just works. In 2020 we shall see if more games are cross platform (looks like wasteland 2 and wasteland 3 are, so thats great!). But still I would have trouble giving up programs like winamp, which i have been using since the 90s. And the main issue for me is that I know that programs will just work in windows. My wifes programs especially. I can work around UI differences and program incompatibilities, but my wife cannot. I also have been a windows only tech for 15 years and there is something to be said for using what you have to support. Sure the logging in 8000 times better in linux, but unless i start using linux regularly professionally i doubt I will install it at home. 4 access points for 5000 people? Yeah your gonna have a bad time. Most access points can support like 100 people on them max. In a temporary situation, I would have gotten at least 10, more like 20 APs for that amount of people and a wireless lan controller to manage them. We regularly use aprox 80 APs to cover a building with 5000 users. You completely underestimated how many APs you need for sure! I never covered a large outdoor space, but you usually do these things by number of people attending because each AP can only handle so many connections.

Stadiums on the other hand sometimes have thousands to tens of thousands of APs and as other people pointed out, concerts in those stadiums work ok. Someone also said that the wireless infrastructure was provided just for the benches (or whatever they are called). So the surfaces would have had thier own wireless network on the playfield. This makes sense as no one is going to use the same wifi network for public as for something as important as team tools.

Having used MS surface devices professionally, I can say that they are nice, but they are also quite buggy, so i would blame them and windows 10 for most of the problems. Bring some ipads in and see if they have the same problems, i bet they dont.

From anecdotal experience with my 13 windows 10 surface pro 3's and 4 devices, i would say its all three. The hardware has overheating problems, the software (windows 10) craps out randomly requiring power cycles (Which on the surface means holding down the power button for 30 seconds). They need firmware updates out of the box to be usable mostly. And occasionally some combination of the above locks up wireless requiring a reboot.

So i have no problem believing that the surfaces are the core of the issue. I see litterally none of the same problems with any ipad we have. I hate apple, but they are far far FAR more reliable than microsoft surface devices.

I do have a surface and i love it when im out and about and the touchscreen is useful, but the hardware itself does have problems and windows 10 is not quite ready for production (and getting miraculously LESS ready with every update...)

However, the newer chipset with 4x m2 support can drive a high end SSD over 2000MB/s (some over 3k now!). So upgrading from a core 2 quad was a good move for me. Even though the quad really did work fine.

I did manage to skip a whole upgrade to core series around 2012 and waited it out till q1 2016. But the machine i would have bought at the time, a 2600k is still selling for a premium on ebay. CPU is still worth $150 USD last time i looked.

This isn't the 1970s, my god. I couldn't even believe how much fraud I could have done with basically zero effort down there. I can't believe that there isn't massive credit card fraud in the USA. Sure, chip cards can be cloned and pins can be captured with hidden cameras, but thats orders of magnitude more effort than simply stealing someones card number and faking their signature. It would be like vendors accepting personal cheques! Mag stripes are relics from a bygone age.

And if you cant program for chip and pin cards, you need to refresh your skills. Every POS software I have worked with in the last 5 years at least, is chip and pin. You get around all PCI compliance issues because cc numbers are never stored or transmitted in plain text anything at any point. The pin authorizes the card at the pinpad and simply transmits a pass or fail to the bank, encrypted. The payment processor has an agent installed on the PC if they are integrated. Or so I understand, i just service them, not a programmer. But the systems are ubiquitous.
