Well, the downloadable version of WP8 has terrible fonts, though. No TTF support, you can't add your own Type 1 fonts, and there's only one serif variable-width font that isn't butt-ugly. Not so great. I still use it, because all the other Linux word processors suck even more, though. And I'm not going to pay $150 for a new version, just so I can have normal fonts. Why can't I just buy plain WordPerfect 9? i don't want Quattro Pro and all that crap!

Oh, gee. No problem. Let's just make ours the standard. Just beause everyone who reads /. knows how great OSS is doesn't mean that everyone else does. It's hard to make something standard, and being better isn't always the way. Everyone knows the examples. Also, Sorenson is pretty good. It's not the easiest thing in the world to make a codec as good as Sorenson or even RealVideo. In answer to your first question, the answer is, because lots of people provide QTs, like on their web sites, and we would like to play them. You can't just say to some random QT file, "Poof! You're an MPEG!" It doesn't work like that. If you're creating video, then of course you can use whatever format you want.

I can't tell if you're making a joke or if you're serious, so I'll assume you're serious. Sorry for being mean like these 13-year-olds, but you have just barely enough historical knowledge to look like a retard.

Do you really think that work for long. They tried some Nazti shit that like that with me and I would most likely have the courts all over them in a second. I am sorry if I am ranting but we had pathetic attempts to stir people back in the 30's during the great depression in America and it didn't work at all in any way.

Actually, the attempts to stir people up were in the 20s, before the Depression began. They were very successful, in fact, and caused a virulent anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic, and anti-black backlash. The KKK, of course, was at the forefront.

My principles are based on logic. Since people know of the Natzis and since books have been published and all sorts of other things have happened a logical human being will not be tempted to believe something that they see as readily.

You assume that a) everyone knows their history, presumably better than you know yours, b) everyone has the same perspective, and that c) everyone is rational. All three of those assumptions are wrong. People ignore the lessons of history, sympathize with the bad guys, and act on emotion all the time. Ethnic and religious hatreds, scapegoating during economic hardships, and reactionary restricitions on human rights and civil liberties are all too easy to bring to the fore. In the immediate aftermath of World War II, the US experienced a severe, decade-long persecution of Communists. Those deprived of their reputations and other assets were, in large part, neither criminal nor even Communist. Even if they were Communist, they had broken no law. Also, when the bad guys are the majority, they have the power. If you're a black man in 1875 South Carolina, and you vote Republican (the Republicans were the liberals at that time), you better worry about getting lynched. The KKK and the Red Shirts don't give a shit about whether your candy-ass has the Constitution on its side. They just know that they don't want you havin' no rights.

Well, a baby boomer couldn't exactly have been elected right after WWII, could he? The soonest a baby boomer could possibly have been elected was 35 years after 1945 = 1980. In fact, it took until 1992. 12 years isn't that bad. However, unlike the rest of your relatively intelligent post, this is irrelevant. A generation is not analogous to a cultural group. A more relevant example would be, "Look how long after the Civil War it took for a black to be elected President." That hasn't happened yet, and it's been 135 years.

I'm not positive in this case, but the explanation is probably that, while RH and SuSE both use the RPM format, they don't keep all their files in the same places. If you install an RH RPM on SuSE, or vice versa, nothing terrible will happen, but it might not be so clean anymore. I run Mandrake 6.1, which is essentially the same as RH in layout, and SuSE RPMs cause no problems.

Sure it's off topic, but I'll go with it. Of course, you're right about the danger of decreasing biodiversity. For example, at one point, the total number of cheetahs in the world was 7, and now the species is suffering heavily from the lack of genetic variation.
But another problem, even ignoring the biodiversity problem, is that the change with artificial GM happens much more quickly than with breeding. With breeding, the surrounding environment (including other plants and animals)
has time to react to change. With GM, though, it's a shock, and the various dependent species don't know what to do. Therefore, the equilibrium can be very easily upset. The same phenomenon can be observed when alien species are introduced into a new environment, like kudzu in Florida, f'rinstance. The other species are overwhelmed.
