Could you PLEASE publicly (as in, post it in a blog, and then e-mail a copy) challenge M&B about this! I remember this as well and I find this kind of about-face to be a real kick in the teeth.
I might e-mail her in a few days, but I'm sure she's got around 5,000 hatemails in her inbox right now, so I doubt she'd actually see my message. If I was in that situation, I'd be deleting mail en masse.
As I stated here, I paid $150 for a commercial license for MT 2.6. On December 22nd of 2003, a post to MT's site stated:
The next version of Movable Type will be version 3.0, a significant and free upgrade.
And
Movable Type 3.0 will be a free download and upgrade.
It isn't a free upgrade. The promotional price for the cheapest commercial MT license is $199. My earlier purchase of a commercial MT 2.6 license knocks $20 off of that. 6A might think they're going to move us to the presumably more lucrative TypePad hosted service, but many of us are simply going to switch to other software.
Just to stay even with the number of new workers entering the workforce, the US needs to add 300,000 jobs per month. Multiply 300,000 by 12 months by 6 years (the difference between now and 2010) and you get 21.6 million, a number suspiciously close to the 22 million cited in the article. I'm guessing that the job creation number is based on horseshit.
Bleh. I think I got "Entourage X" and "Outlook 2001 for Mac" confused. Outlook 2001 is not OS X-native, so I don't want it. Entourage X is OS X-native, and does support POP/IMAP/SMTP, but does *not* support the more advanced scheduling and Global Address List support that the Ximian Connector does.
Microsoft has an Exchange client for the Mac called Entourage, but it is crippled so it can *only* communicate with an Exchange Server, no POP/IMAP/SMTP connections.
I already own video capture cards that run under Linux, but what about other imaging products? I was doing some work at a dental office the other day, and they were using specialized video capture equipment for their X-ray machines (running on Windows 98 PCs... blech!). Based on the Windows driver name (bt848.sys), I'm sure it uses a standard video capture chipset used in many TV tuner cards, but these cards *definitely* didn't have Linux drivers.
Below I have posted a copy of this comment. It concerns a subject in which I am interested, namely an OSS authentication scheme that is an alternative to MS Active Directory or Novell NDS. The original author is a known crapflooder with a bitchslapped account, so I doubt many people will see it (which is why I am reposting it).
"One of my relatives is responsible for IT spending for a rural county in California. I am looking at Linux as an alternative to Windows on the desktop, and I have suggested StarOffice as an alternative to MS-Office. SO6 should be available by the time the county makes its decision."
"One thing I am interested in is a directory services solution for Linux. Novell has Linux binaries for their excellent NDS/eDirectory product, but I'm worried about Novell's viability as a company. Also, I would prefer to use an open source solution, but the only OSS directory services software that I am aware of is OpenLDAP, and it just doesn't seem mature enough yet for production use. The county has about 1500 client systems."
AbriaSoft has a free download for "AbriaSQL," a distribution of MySQL, PHP, and some other stuff with a wizard-driven interface that takes just a few minutes. It fixes the MySQL install problem in RH7, also. Check'em out...
A little OT, but AstroTerra has developed technology for transferring data at 1 Gbps over laser from a ground station to a satellite 2000 km up, and they have leveraged the stupendous amount of US taxpayer-funded R&D into a very lucrative product line for building-to-building high-speed network links.
Well, since Semtex hasn't been manufactured in over a decade, and the vegetable oil used as a plasticizer in it tends to leak out over time, I'm okay with that.
> Oh yeh, and I suppose that if somebody handed you a brand new Ferrari Dino with the bonnet welded shut you'd be happy about that too.
Yes, actually, I would be happy about it. A brand new Ferrari with the "bonnet" welded shut is a brand new Ferrari that could use a little work. I'm certainly not going to criticize the person who gave me the car!
I wasn't suggesting that StarOffice would be a smash hit if Sun sold it retail, but they did buy Star Division, and they've since paid their developers to work on it, so Sun has dumped quite a bit of money into a product that they simply give away.
Actually, I posted the one that began with "/. DoS?" It seems that the body of postings is scrubbed to remove "unwanted" tags, but the subject line is not. The actual subject line I posted began with "/. DoS? ", then had a smaller-than character to indicate the beginning of a tag, then had "script language=" as the rest of the subject line. Try it yourself! Amuse your friends!
Not exactly radio, but free of charge and in MP3 format: here.
How is this a free upgrade to my commercial MT 2.6 license? (Hint: it isn't)

Amazon does have these items listed, and if you order soon enough they can deliver them by Monday:
SuSE Linux 9.1 Personal ($28.99)SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional ($84.99)
Why yes, those are *evil* Amazon Associates referrer links!
These guys aren't accused of being geniuses, just violent thugs.
not $22 million in jobs.

... when you pry them out of my cold, dead hands.

Apparently, you've never seen the "Godzilla" movies. Bad things happen when you dump hazardous material into the ocean.
I ported Linux to my Rio 500, and I'm routing IP between the USB port and headphone socket.

... calls the Drudge Report untrustworthy?
Now that's the pot calling the kettle black!
According to this Wired article (last paragraph of first page), MS will...
... that are based on XML. I certainly hope that's true!
[shift from] storing data in the company's proprietary Office formats to open standards.

I am thinking you should stop bitching about the software not being "Open Source."
I am grateful that Sun--for whatever reason--has decided to eat a few million dollars and release a damn decent office suite at no charge.
If someone gave me car, I wouldn't rag on them for not including the owner's manual, know what I mean?

Why is a commercial venture like /. a .org? .com?
Shouldn't it also be a
