Build a mass driver on the moon and there you go - the ultimate way to ensure *nobody* is ever going to attack you, as despite all the missile interception technology you can come up with, it'll be a long time 'till you can shield yourself against a deadly barrage of big, fat asteroids raining down from the sky. Forget about nukes.

Of course, it would also be useful for more peaceful purposes. Before setting up a base on Mars, it would be quite useful to build a base on the moon to test everything and maybe discover something new that'd help as well.

The difference here is that people are afraid of terrorist groups however and not their government. I'm quite sure that the new Iraqi government won't feed you feet-first into an industrial grinder for saying that you think the current head of state is full of shit. Yes, there is a huge terrorist problem in Iraq now, maybe larger than Saddam's state terrorism, true, but it's outlaws doing it and not a "lawful" government.

Is television really *that* bad where you live? In my country, 5 breaks is what you get when watching a 90 minutes movie, and that's already horribly atmosphere-breaking (and one of the three main reasons for me turning to torrents instead - the other two being TV channels not playing shows in my desired language and DVD boxes being atrociously expensive here).
