For nothing other than the cool-looking factor, that is my 'mech of choice, too. My gf and I had taken her youngest to the mall, and in one of the game stores they had some 'mech toys. I spotted the MadCat version and pointed it out.

    "That's what I want."

    "The toy?" she asked.

"No, the 75-ton version with jump jets and missile racks."

Rather than making an ad on the web accountable in ways that no other media is required, why not just assume it's getting you market-awareness and presence?

My gawd - I'd nearly forgotten about chewing through the stacks of Doc Savage rags I'd found in family storage when I was a kid. Entertaining, until I burned out on them; that era's pulp fiction was incredibly formulaic, although in all fairness I doubt that's changed much over the years. Great mindless stuff, lots of melodrama and action, good guys were really good and bad guys were just awful.

To attempt to get back on topic, I thought the same thing when I saw the "Sky Captain" trailer - revitalizing the old pulp fiction stories.

If smarter people than me haven't given something a good, thorough going-over, then I'm pretty hesitant to give such a thing a try.

What the online world needs is more people who understand that defensive and maintenance utilities are good things to be updated and used often, and to "observe" their computer's behavior (checking for processes, suddenly-appearing directories and files, sniffing packets leaving their machine to see if some app is trying to pull a fast one, etc.), but that would require that people actually understand these funny little boxes that run Windows.

Not that this addresses the issue, but I remember introducing my office mates (at my previous job) to Quake, and setting up lunchtime deathmatches. By this time, I'd been playing FPS for years (since Quake was more than a bit aged when we played) and everyone else was new to the concept (much less the game.

To level the playing field, I set everyone up with drab skins, hard to see on most of the brown Q1 maps, and gave myself a bright stop-sign red skin. To boot, for quite a while (until people learned the maps, the moves, and the weapons), I used only shotgun. Everyone appreciated the equalizing.

The funny part, to me, was the different verbal reactions: with some, it was "when I see red, I know where to aim," while others said "when I see red, I run away!"

    My pointless two cents. :P

According to what I remember from the "making-of" snippets, it was Princess Fiona who caused them the most trouble with that issue - their first version was apparently too realistic for believable placement and interaction within the film's world. They couldn't have a "real" looking character interacting with obviously "cartoonish" characters without making the disparity noticeable and interrupting the flow of the movie and setting.

I haven't tested out a karma yet but I definitely love my empeg and if it's half as good it's much better than anything else.

I bought the first 20GB Karma that appeared in the local Best Buy - I had promised myself a Neuros, but on hearing that there were problems with skipping on higher-bitrate oggs, I decided to wait until the firmware was improved. In the meantime, the Karma was announced, and I loved the size of it, and so it goes...

Anyway, same thing with the Karma, initially: skipping on high-bitrate tracks. About two weeks after I bought it, firmware 1.1.1 was released, and the skips disappeared completely. The unit is nicely compact, and sits nicely in the front pocket of my jeans. Battery life isn't bad at all - I commute an hour to work, and depending on how much I use it outside of the car, I can usually make it to the weekend before having to recharge. (No, I didn't buy the car DC adaptor.)

I do have a few issues - and these are minor - one being the transfer speeds (USB, dunno if it supports USB 2.0 as my machine doesn't have it and I'm too lazy to check the Karma's documentation). It took about six to seven hours to transfer about 14GB, which isn't terrible, since i just left it go overnight. The second issue I had was on the usability of the interface. Playback is a no-brainer, easy and fairly intuitive. Playlist building and sorting, on the other hand, didn't come quite as quickly to me. I have yet to thoroughly investigate that avenue, though, since I haven't fully checked out the Music Manager software and since I just tend to put "All" on shuffle.

My two cents, as it were.

Methinks you might have forgotten about things like licensing costs. I can assure you EMI would likely be paying a non-insignificant license fee to whomever developed the DRM method they choose to implement; said fee may be imposed per title, per time unit (week/month/annum), or per individual unit (CD) produced.

When you manufacture several hundred thousand CDs per week, year-'round, licensing becomes another operating cost subtracting from the chunk left over at the bottom line. Meaning they either accept lower profits (ha!), or raise prices to compensate. Hmm...
