In other words: make it as randon as possible. This will make it more difficult to brute force crack.

It's not quite as customisable as AvantGo, but it does what is needed. You supply it with a webpage, and how many links deep to go, and it takes care of the rest. It also compresses the web page down to iSilo format, so it takes up less space.

Now some files go well below 190.

I have also noticed an increase in popularity for ogg files on gnucleus.

  10. The problem here is... on Making Strategy Games with...Strategy? · · Score: 1

You are trying to apply what are basically "real wat time strategies" to a game thatw asn't designed for them. The difference is that when Blizzard made Starcraft, they came up with their own new set of "strategies." The Terrans can do somethings eg: cloak their ships, etc. The Protoss are not capable of this, so you have to come up with a way to deal with that. You can do it by either having probes, or ground cannons. All in all, it is still very simplified, but with the amount of man hours required, it would not be feasible to implement real war time strategies into games at this point. It may not even be that fun for a single player/head to head game if we could.

  11. Hasn't this always... on Palm OS Spinoff · · Score: 2, Insightful

been the plan? Even if it hasn't, it is never the less a good idea. It will put 3Com on the same footing as all the other PalmOS licensees. They will no longer have access to the latest features. We may also see the advances that are really needed to fully squash PowerPC (2002? I think that's the latest version) come from Palm, as opposed to licensees. The licensees won't have to work quite as hard to differentiate themselves from the Pocket PC devices. The really great advances will be standard across the majority of the devices.

  12. OS X seems to be Unix done right... on Ars Technica OS X 10.1 Review · · Score: 4, Insightful

It has a very good looking desktop. Yet behind that beauty it has the power of one of the most powerful operating systems in recent history. In the past it has been often immitated, but never equaled. Windows '95 was a direct rip of the current (at the time) version of MacOS. And yet it missed out on the important points. Sure I could put in a CD and it would autoplay it, but what if I wanted the contents of the disc that I had just inserted to be available to me at that instant from the desktop? On MacOS I wouldn't have to go through the the same old "My Computer->CD Rom Drive" nonsense.

Ease of use people. That's what it's all about. Apple has always had it, Microsoft keeps trying and missing, and Linux is getting there via comapnies like Mandrake and desktops like KDE.

Apple: Port OS X to the Intel platform. Microsoft is already running scared, now is the time to make them cower in fear.

  13. Why is this such a great concern? on File Extensions And Monopolies · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's not really that big of a deal. If you want to use a different program, all you have to do is start that program, and open the file that you want to use. All Microsoft is doing here is making things easier for the end user. If you want to stop using Word to open .doc files, remove it, and install Corel Office.

Other companies (as was pointed out in the article) have been doing this for years. Why is this suddenly such a big deal? Because the author needed to come up with a column. Pick something that wasn't a big deal, and turn it into one.

Microsoft should not be painted with such a black brush simply for trying to make it easier to be a user of their software.
