I was an MVS sys prog who saw the change coming in the 90s, totally retrained myself at the age of 45 to be a Windows and LAN sysadmin plus knowledge of how to system integrate the old world and the new, apparently was an excellent sysadmin and network guy and got paid top dollar. I then moved on learning all about the Internet etc still keeping myself up to date. Scott Corely may be correct its hard to teach old dogs new tricks but if they really want to do it they can, and so at least give them a chance.
I left a company in the UK becuase of this. I put together a team selected from the top IT professionals in the company and all of whom got top reviews and pay hikes. When I reviewed them 12 months later I gave them all top marks but the HR dept said I could only put 2 at the top, 6 in the middle and 2 at the bottom. They just could not see why this was wrong and said it was Company Policy...this was not an IT specific company btw. Anyway after a fuss I left and so did 7 of the others when they found out what was going on.
yep I use it a lot, not so much for the list of programs but the search box to quickly find a prog I want to run that I do not run regularly enough to pin on the bar
My son has a friend who works in Beijing as a programmer and definitely does not speak any flavour of Chinese except what he might have picked up in the past 2 years. So it is possible
Yep, in the end I dropped out of IT because of the anxiety and the very frequent out of hours call outs when I worked for a large UK bank. Even if I was not on call they still did as I was the "best one" for the system down situation. Phone ringing after 9Pm sent my heart rate and BP through the roof.
Given that everybody nowadays seems to have an IPOD, mobile phone or whatever equivalent device with earphones then hearing aids no longer need to be small an unobtrusive so hopefully we may be able to get cheap ones , maybe even plugged into our IPOD or whatever
My two sons have been playing games , mainly violent on all platforms since they were about 5 years old (they are now in their early 20s). They also take still part in Counterstrike tournaments.
They are about the most non violent people you would ever meet. They also play soccer in the real world....never any incidents there despite provocation at times.
I have not read the book but I agree there is no connection between game violence and the real world except when the person is already violent in which case when the person brings his real world violence to the game in a gratuitous manner.
