Or streamrip. Punch up a 128(or even 160)kbps stream from a station you think you'll like and let it run overnight. I don't see the problem with it as much, you get to listen to that radio station like you get to watch TV on your Tivo. Why not?
Incidentally, one of the best things I've found about internet streaming is the variety of songs that many stations have. You're in no way limited to top40, country, rap, or whatever popular music you hear on the radio. There are diverse styles and radio stations with libraries of hundreds of songs you've never heard. There's a lot of music out there, much of it good.
Every time I find a new way to get music, you/. pussies have to pick up on it and show the unwashed masses how to do it! Now radio stations can't handle the traffic. Now the RIAA's on the scent. Now I can't stream rip. Damn you for showing everyone the idea! [puff puff] I'm sorry for yelling. But you guys may have just ruined this by giving it this new audience.

"will pay you $1 per CPU hour..."
You don't think that this thing will be using all your idle CPU time, do you? Certainly not -- it will use 2-10%, and that's going to cut deeply into your profits.
This would make a great Poll. It would fairly accurately state what flavor of tin-hatter is in the majority here:

That's too outlandish a secret identity) C: Conspiracy Theorists (Capitalist) D: ? E: SCO Bashers F: Microsoft Bashers (Apple and Linux) G: Didn't read this article/loves the CowboyNeal option
Perhaps he would be able to arrange in advance to have The Mail Box or a UPS store ship the package to him? I think if he called around enough he could find someone who was willing to take delivery of the package and then deliver it to the UK. Of course, this means that he doesn't even have to be in the USA... It's a good backup plan.
That said, going to a retail outlet sounds like a lot less work.
without a stable GHz metric to build off of, things are bound to get messy
metalhed77 said in a post just a few above yours that AMD bases their ratings on a Duron 1000MHz, which I assume to mean that the 3200+ == 3.2x the Duron in whatever tests they run. So that's the GHz metric. No problem.
I use my handheld to read because my girlfriend gets pissy if I stay up late. So I go to bed but read. I don't need to turn the lights on, it's backlit--everything works out.
Look, no offense or anything, but we're trying to come up with suggestions to get this kid's ass beat less.
women
Okay, this one could work. Ceteris paribus, If you take two 14 year olds -- one who "knows" women and one who doesn't, the one who knows women is going to have more social skills. But I think that may be contrary to the goals of the mentor...
That's pretty cool. What I'd like is something like www.idrink.com, only with food, where you get to input whatever ingredients you have, and it tells you what you can make from it's list of recipes. Obviously it'd be a bigger task (vodka, jagermeister, coke, and beer doesn't take that long to enter) but it would be interesting -- you could even have it reccommend recipes based on things you've had in the past, where it would take your cooking skill level, time constraints, and likes into account as well as your ingredients. Heck, it could plan all your meals for you!
And he is enabled to profit from anyone else's software
But he doesn't want to profit from anyone else's software -- he wants to write software. The only problem is that he isn't making money by writing software, which is all he wants to do. He doesn't want to get a job, he doesn't want to support somebody else's creations. He wants to create.
But don't think you'll be able to charge anyone but fools for a basic operating system, or browser, or email program, or media player, or ripper, or DVD player, or calculator, etc. etc. etc.
This is an interesting idea. Whether you're right or not, I had to stop and think about it.
There are two costs of any product: the up-front cost (in this case, R&D), and the per-unit cost (distribution medium). So if someone is willing to front the cost for R&D by doing it themselves for free, and since The Internet provides a basically free per-unit cost, there's no reason that things can't be free. This isn't a revalation.
Don't kill me for saying this, but I want to put it out to answer your point: people who create software for free are fools, because they give away something that they could instead sell. Perhaps people who pay for a service that they could get for free are fools as well, but the developers, to some extent, are fools for making it free in the first place.
Certainly we're not all fools, we all have reasons for making the decisions we do, but you see that it goes both ways.
Offtopic hypothetical: you're at an accident on a street. traffic is backed up a bit, and the left lane is blocked off. Everyone gets into the right lane in an orderly fashion, except for one guy who drives up past everybody in the left lane all the way up to the cones, then merges in front of you at the last second. Is he the fool, or are you?
but if you provide the service that brings these tools to their fingertips, then maybe you can get an honest days pay out of the deal
Until someone figures out how to provide that service for free. Then you, like others, are out of a job.
People can choose to develop software for free or they can choose to charge for their software.
Throwing out all that grey area where you get a company to sponsor you, charge for support, or whatever...
Here's my question: If they choose to create free software, then the value of their labors is... $0? Why would they create something that doesn't have monetary value? I'm not saying there's no reason to, and I'm not saying there's no value to the software (there obviously is), but I'd like to hear the rationale.
if it wasn't for oss wares, my company wouldn't even exist and i wouldn't have this job. period.
That's what this guy Clemens was saying, though... The OSS programmer does his work for free. If he is a part of a larger group, selling support, or using the free software to help sell hardware, then that's one thing, but in many circumstances people who develop free software do so independently of larger backing -- they do it out of the goodness of their heart, their desire to contribute. That doesn't pay the bills. Then, companies such as yours take his work, make it their own (as they have every right to do--he specifically grants them that right when he releases the software), and profit from it. He not only doesn't profit from his software, he enables others to profit from it.
Clemens' argument is specific to this kid's circumstance, where the kid may want to spend most of his working life writing free software as opposed to the other kind, and in the specific case(the program being developed independently with a group contributing their time for free) I think the argument is accurate.
So you're telling me that a rental store will pay an extra $70 for the rights to rent a movie for two weeks? They're going to recoup 10, 20 dollars of that back, max. What's the logic here?
there's usually someone on each server that is so much better than the rest that it lowers the fun-factor for everyone else. I'm that guy. It's fun for me.
"Remember my name -- you'll be cursing it in a minute!"
Just make sure you have enough RAM for it. I used to go to the bathroom and grab a drink waiting for a level to load. Maps ended before I was able to get in. 512MB minimum.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's because 99% of their users didn't have to do anything to play streams thru windows media player, whereas most people don't have the ogg codecs installed. The small number of people who use this service and don't run windows (can Macs play WMA files and their ilk?) are statistically insignificant... Can you honestly say that you (as a linux-only user) have listened to them in the past? Because if not, I'm sure they didn't consider your opinion when deciding on what codec to use.
Windows is shit. Take it from someone who knows a lot
You, the venerable Anonymous Coward, knows more than Raymond Chen. you've never used that shitty TweakUI, and only idiots would. Wow. Seems like pretty strong words from NOBODY.
It's also the iPod, the mac, and the PS2. And the TV, and the games for #2 and #3, and the music CDs, and the 2x a week you drop $60 on dinner for you and your SO, and insurance for your car/apt/health/life/cat, and TAXES.
It's not just the car, although that's a good percentage of it. It's the American lifestyle. It's a trap. Don't fall for it. If you work for a living, you become a slave. Not to the company you work for, you become a slave to your paycheck. It's tempting to spend your paycheck on all these little niceties, but if you spend that paycheck tomorrow, you'll be spending your paycheck for the rest of your life. If you do, then that's fine, but recognize that some people make ends meet with far less money. It's a lifestyle thing though. If you're stuck in it, and you're not happy, then change.
If you want to spend less money, itemize everything you pay money for in a month, and realize that you could ELIMINATE 95% of it if you absolutely had to. People do. Not that you should, but you could. And if you did, even for a couple of months, you'd probably realize that it's not too bad, and that if you're going to spend your life working, you'd better have something more to show for it than enough money for an iPod and to pay the bills. Because if that's all you have, then WTF are you doing it all for?
I suspect it's because you don't know another way. It's the American lifestyle. It's a trap.
There are other ways.
.
And as for the subway system, there are plenty of cities in America that are perfectly accessible by bicycle and bus (you can put your bike on the bus, you know). Or if you live too far from work, buy a scooter, pay $20/year for liability insurance, and enjoy the 60MPG you get. Parking's easy too.
Or streamrip. Punch up a 128(or even 160)kbps stream from a station you think you'll like and let it run overnight.

It's like that Windows source code leak:
