Unfortunately Apple is the best engineering design company ever!! However - when one looks a little closer at OS-X - and iTunes etc one finds the snake oil i am refering to. I just spent a couple of hours cleaning up a really sloppy update of iTunes - as i looked around for solutions ( i'm a Linux guy and ignorant of mac) I found endless sad stories of folks trying to deal with the same thing. Earlier, the same machine (owned by my friends daughter) had all kiinds of wifi problems - looked around and found - the radio was known bad - but Apple didn't support replacement. Whaaa? - anyway - biz as usual as far as i can see... Apple - MS ... whats the diff...

Fail - Both Apple and Google have failed miserably. Apple more than Google. I believe that Google has produced some rally great and innovate ideas that have helped keep the flow of tech workers moving. The evil is really relative with them (C H I N A). With Apple things are definitely more rotten. This is the snake medicine / revival tent kind of evil. The kind that promises salvation, while delivering the same old crap. oops - sorry ...

I love the way people jump on these stories as though they didn't realize it was a setup. Pretty much anyone in our government that didn't want Cuba relations to move forward might have been behind this (ie - sending the guy over to be arrested).

I have been reading (almost exclusively) on my Dell Axim for about 4 years now, and find it a real treat. Lets look at the pros:

o Back lit screen - read at night with no light.

o Great software - i use an old copy of uBook Reader

o light - I can hold it in one hand for a long time.

o small - i can put it in my pocket.

    o cost usd279 4 years ago.

o takes sd cards (hold lots of books)

o no ties to any corporate entity (ie - no one is going to steal 1984 from me in the middle of the night.)

    o uses many formats.

Also, I am 67 and my eyesight sucks - but the axim is the easiest media i read. The contrast is great and the software does excellent pagination, so i don't find the small screen even an issue (see "small" above)

So...why all the buzz about single purpose. expensive, DRM filled, soon to be obsolete, eBook readers? btw - Axim is no more, so i am not spamming here...

  15. Jury is out... on Computer Games and Traditional CS Courses · · Score: 1

As one who teaches in a University system where the "feed" for the department i teach in contains a game development program, i have to say that i have seen a downturn in student quality since the game program began.

I think the reason for this is that something called "Game Development" or "Game Programming" attracts different students than something called "Computer Programming", or "Software Development". I found that students at risk would spend a lot of time in the game lab, instead of working on C++, which they were struggling with.

Anyway - I hope whoever adopts a game development program thinks about all of the ramifications, and does some intense screening of potential students.
