I suppose if your bank went out of business and FDIC said "no payment for you - we are going out of business" would you be so cool about it?
Tough shit you say - I live on SS! Can I come to your house for a meal or to get out of the cold? I am also trained by our government in violence, and you better believe that if myself, or anyone i care about finds themselves cut off from the necessities of life by self serving folks like you, I will put that training into practice.
I and others who have worked our butts off for our entire lives will no be shunted aside like some old slab of meat - I will take some greedy, polluting, inhuman bastards with me!
Guaranteed revolution - starting with me - I have paid my entire working life - now you just want to cut it off? Let's do it starting when you turn 65...
Yes yes - let's make all customers change over to a strong password like XYZ communications(not the real name) just did recently. My personal experience was:
1. My current password scheme, which i have been using for 3 or 4 years, didn't work any more.
2. When I went to log in with my new password, it also didm't work.
3. When I called XYZ the CS rep immediately asked me for my password over the phone,
4. When i pointed out the inherent insecurity in that, I was told that I could change my password afterward. Of course, that is what caused me to call in the first place. Anyone see the tight loop here?
I am a somewhat savy user - I run a home network of mixed Linux and doze machines, subnets etc. That means that I understood the threat being opened by having however many hundred thousand people go through this process, including those that already had pretty strong passwords. Many customers do not.
Another case of the fix being worse that the problem?
This also happened with my bank, which left the passwords alone, but added a question - gee - that's like so much more difficult to break than the password alone (not) - again - putting the onus on the customer.
As many have mentioned - this has been the surefire place to get the connectors and diys stuff you need right away. Plus - Circuit City mini plug 1 ft. connector (in white of course) 19.95! 5 doors down - Same exact RS connector (except in black) - 2.98.
And now CC is gone- wonder why?
So as anyone with thought process intact might have realized immediately - this is just a way to muddy the water for anyone who might have been paying attention to gpl. Did anyone take this at face value? Really?
This is the most disturbing news yet from the worst admin to ever hit this land. These monsters took it upon themselves to delay data that might cause the end of us all. Now that is HUBRIS!
Personally, I like a pocket PC with uBook - i have bad eyesight, and have been using my Dell Axim (i am sure any Mobile PC will work)for years - uses sd cards or USB for xfer - displays many protocols.
just my $.02
Personally, I am both drawn to all of the new and cool things, and repelled by all of the new things to learn and new bugs to deal with. I am currently running Kubuntu 8.04.2 on both of my laptops, after having tried 8.10 and 9.04. It seems like the release cycles and the ambition of the design teams are out of whack.
I am always psyked to see a new release, and i can always find a partition to try it out on. Problem is that my enthusiasm is rarely matched by the offering. Maybe once every 4 releases or so these days.
I am a huge fan of the 3D (compize) interfaces etc, but it seems that they are not ready for prime time, by which i mean i spend more time fiddling with configuration than using it.
So - Please keep the effort up, I am not complaining. I am more than happy to get an occasional truly stable release, even if it costs me a few futile stabs in the dark along the way.
sumdumass says - "Poker is gambling. It's gambling that people have found ways to be skilled at more then others but it is gambling that relies on chance."
Ooooh I see, Sort of like the stock market, or any other business. People have found ways to be skillful at buying food for the restaurant, but if the headlines shout swine flu and you just bought a bunch of pork for your restaurant - whoops - chance just bit you in the ass.
Come on - you are playing with words here like so many lawyers do all the time.
The real money vs play money thing was to point out that everyone playing the game is not looking for big winnings, some just like the game!
BTW - poker sites go to great lengths to make sure you can't really buy anything with the money.
One last thing - As mentioned above, there has been a court case of a professional poker player vs the IRS - The IRS taking your position, that poker is a game of chance, and the IRS lost. It was shown that if you or I play against that professional we will lose. Therefor the person (google it, it is a well documented case) was not in arrears on taxes on money earned on a game of chance. So even the courts agree that poker is not a game of chance.
goto works fine if you know what you are doing?... and you never ever want to maintain your code.... and you don't want others to be able to read your code.... froth - drool - argghhh
As a 66 yo programmer who actually had to write and maintain what were considered large programs with gotos in FORTRAN using punch cards and untouchable main frames, or as we used to call them, computers, I would question the sanity of someone who thought this was a good way to write code by anyone.
I have taken the time to learn C, Pascal, C++, and Java at a professional level, to get as far as possible from those crappy languages of the past. Who the hell would teach FORTRAN now?? Why not COBOL for all of the business majors too?
Isn't the point of drug laws to keep people from ruining their lives?
Why is the government ruining drug users' lives by arresting them and leaving them with criminal records?
"the thought of winning is what drives most gamblers who are out of control"
Again - poker is not gambling, and if winning money was the whole thing, it would be very difficult to explain the millions of people playing right now for play money. I am a play money player - just trying to get better and better (no ceiling) and having a lot of fun doing it. This is completely free on most sites and there is no pressure to play for money.
check www.fulltiltpoker.net or www.pokerstars.net if you fon't believe me - I have no affiliation with either, but i have played on both for years.
Poker is not gambling as has been proved in a US Tax case. Poker is a skill that can be learned, and as you become more proficient, your probability of making money becomes greater. Compare this to roulette, black jack. dice. slots etc and you will see the difference.
Have fun (if the feds will let you)
OTOH - I have a completely computerphobe friend who i set up with Linux - he uses it every day and loves it - recently when i went to do some work on his box, he said "...be sure to keep the Linux on there...".
Sooooo - I guess it's not just enthusiasts.
Plus... it's probably your negativity that gets you moded down.
Lawyers go through a special course called Obfuscation and Obliteration (O&O to those in the know) which teaches them to take even the simplest human task and insert so many hoops etc, that even the brightest human has no chance.
Check out netflix instant, i watched the whole thing with no hastle at all. I have a ROKU player for the big screen watching, which is very satisfactory when it works, but I also watch a lot on the computer monitor. Netflix, itself, has been awsum. I hear people complain that they don't have the whole catalog, but what they have is more that enough! The DVDs i get from them tend to sit around now. I love being able to see the old stuff too - The very first Burns and Allen tv episode - hilarious and truly informative as to the innovations TV programming has gone through.
Ironic that this moron is fromSony - The most schizophrenic company ever! Let's see, they make hardwrae for copying CDs/DVDs (and in the old days - tape) and they make media. The HW guys are trying to sell us ways to copy the content while the content guys are suing us for copying content... Wow!
The author is very funny too, talking about "...after store hours...", you can tell this bozo has absolutely no clue, and he is in charge. Next he will be talking about how the tubes distort the sound...
what a mess

What would our economic system do without these felons - Let's make sure they don't retire!
Who cares - They are a bunch of snoops who don't deserve any apps at all. (see earlier story)
We must be living in backwords land - Hmmm - says here you are broke - therefore, No Job For You...

As long as that scary cult with all the white stuff is involved - count me out. Those wierdos have become way worse that M# in the last few years..,
(speechless fool says) Wow! Well spoken!
