The now former Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) was also out of Charlotte too. I was actually shocked the first time I walked into a local BoA branch with a friend and they had someone on the floor trying to get new business. I never saw any of that at my local community bank. Support your local community banks and credit unions, they usually don't charge BS fees and sometimes have better lending rates.
Red Hat is out of NC, Cisco has a few offices in NC as well. I have met a few IT workers from that area and they seem to get treated worse then the ones around the NYC metro area do.
I didn't see Fringe mentioned on that list. Sadly this season will likely be its last. Heavily serialized genre shows don't pull the ratings network TV demands.
Or more likely, just refuse to collect garbage with substantial compostable materials.
We have private garbage collection here, they already do that. Our garbage is incinerated, not landfilled, so the likely reason why they don't accept organic waste is that it cuts into profits (the incinerator charges by the ton). During the fall, they even check paper bags used for leaf pickup to see if you are trying to sneak out grass clippings and such.
I remember when recycling started here, we had to sort out glass (with labels removed!), plastic, and cans. Now it all goes in one bin. We get a list mailed with permitted items every year and the only plastics that should go out in the bin here is #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE). Other areas will vary, but almost everywhere will recycle HDPE and PETE.
Very few people will bother seeking out a nice 50mm prime lens for shooting. There are some good P-n-S digicams out there, the Olympus XZ-1 is pretty nice, and has a fast f:1.8-2.6 zoom lens and supports a lot of the PEN camera add-ons. If you need portability with the flexibility of an interchangeable lens, the mirrorless SLR "Micro 4/3rds" mount cameras are an option.
My HDMI capture card has a AD9889 on it. Best of all, its controlled by a software driver, the original revision of the device driver had a bug where after performing the HDCP handshake, it would allow capture from protected sources. Most people are using this workaround to capture the HDMI output of Playstation 3 game play, a legitimate use.
Novell screwed themselves with the release of Windows 95. Wordperfect for Windows 6.0a came out in 1993 and was in wide use around that time. Novell bought out the company and released a slightly refreshed WP 6.1 with their branding in 1995. A 32-bit version (WP7) finally came out in May of 1996, by then I had switched to Word 95... mostly because it supported features like long file names. There were a ton of tools that added LFNs to 3.1x apps, but none of them worked with Wordperfect 6.x because they didn't use windows common dialogs for opening/saving. Remember Microsoft had a mis-step with Office 97, it didn't correctly open Word 6.0/95 docs so many placed avoided upgrading to it for awhile.
I actually had a machine with the infamous Conner "CFS2113A", a 1995 Packard Bell Force 1999CDTW. I got rid of those drives for one reason, because it wasn't compatible with Windows NT! Apparently that firmware hack only worked with DOS and Windows 95. Once NT loaded its device drivers and took over, the "drive" appeared as two separate ones again and sent NT to blue screen. It was also pretty damned slow too.
Whats sad is some iOS programmers likely don't even know what an Apple II is, let alone how to program it. Its a great teaching platform to learn on though. The system a bit quirky at the low level due to Woz's hackjobs for cost savings, but its simple enough to figure it out quickly.
You sound like an INTJ (Myers-Briggs personality type). Management in most large companies don't always want people who think outside the box and do things their own way (and often do it alone). Yet, these people can be the most productive at their job.
When I was in school, I was amazed at the poor quality of writing coming from other members in group projects. These folks not only had a HS diploma, they also passed the basic English composition class required by the university. When I told them to proof read their work, they got insulted claiming they had already checked it. The writing wasn't even high school level and many sentences were just plain unreadable.
RS-232 is still found on many boards, its the parallel port header thats tough to find. What shocked me is Gigabyte sells a low end Z68 board (the GA-Z68A-D3-B3) that has both serial AND parallel ports on the rear panel right next to the USB 3.0 ports!
UEFI systems without any sort of BIOS compatibility module won't be able to boot 32-bit versions of Windows XP. Of course that doesn't stop anyone from developing one (see efforts to boot Windows on x86 Macs pre-Boot Camp).
Betacam "S" sized tape use the same tape shell. The threading system is also nearly the same. You can even use oxide Betacam (pre "SP") tapes in Betamax decks without a problem (obviously to play/record Betamax format). The Betacam SP tapes are metal and can only be safely used in the 3 ED Beta consumer decks Sony sold as that format used metal tapes too.
The biggest difference between the two is Betamax is a "color under" format with horrible and noisy 0.6Mhz chroma resolution, while Betacam SP is a true component format (separate luma and chroma tracks on the tape) that runs at a faster tape speed.
It is a bit of a pain (user folder structure changed from 'Documents and Settings' to 'Users', sub folders for pictures, music no longer under My Documents) but once you do it, its easy from there on out.
I somehow managed to never use XP as a day to day OS on my main desktop computer (laptop was a Mac). I went right from Windows 2000 to Vista (ugh), and now 7.
XP tried to force all PCI devices onto one IRQ on most boards. I remember the SB Live! getting really grumpy because of that. The only way you could fix it is if you happened to have a board with a BIOS that you could force IRQ assignments to each PCI slot. The problem went away once more boards came with APIC enabled and removed the classic 16 IRQ limitation.
Don't forget interlacing, it gives 2 fields for one frame giving the perception of a doubled framerate.

Integrate Interface Builder into the XCode IDE already. Borland and Microsoft did it years ago with their programming tools.
The I think the Apple IIgs version of HyperCard supported color. Hyper Studio (a clone of HyperCard) is still available and is on the Mac App Store.

If I recall, that Shiva dialer came bundled with some copies of Internet Explorer 4 or 5 for Windows 3.1x/NT 3.5x.

gah... thats "Would work too"
99 LuftBallons would word too. People aren't used to hearing German on the radio in the US.

Microsoft did release Powershell, and there is always Cygwin if you need a *NIX style shell and tools.
