  1. Re:Socalist on Discuss the US Presidential Election & the Economy · · Score: 1

The problem with the basic stuff is that we have priced ourselves out of our own labor market. No one in the US is going to work for $1 a day making basic goods, but there are people in southeast asia who will and they'll be happy to get a whole dollar.

I do agree that we should take the war money and start spending it on our own infrastructure (not to mention education), but I was thinking more like renewable and efficient energy sources.

I find it somewhere between hilarious and deeply disturbing that People can get up there and call Obama a socialist for wanting to tax rich people, while at the same time supporting the buying of banks by the federal government, which actually is socialist.

How is taxing rich people any more socialist than taxing the middle class? Were trillions of dollars in debt, this money is going to come from somewhere.

Also can anyone actually explain why we should be bailing out these banks in the first place? If we want to pretend to be capitalists we have to let businesses fail from time to time, especially when they bring it upon themselves with poor business practices like risky lending, and aggressive mortgages. Now GM is looking for a handout because they can't make a car that anyone wants and somehow thats the tax payers fault. (Meanwhile there's more Honda and Toyota manufacturing in the US than there is US manufacturing.)

It seems our whole economic system is unsound. Its all based on retail sales of mostly useless crap that is designed to fail or has planned obsolesence so you have to buy more. We hardly manufacture anything stateside anymore.

I suggest that we actually start focusing on high tech manufacturing. The stuff that can't be done on the cheap by unskilled labor.

Actually they are pushing search engines to respect the relevant country's laws, but also do a little pushing back. If an official in randomforiegncountry asks for the names of some people the company in question is supposed to push back a little and ask if their request is compliant with their own laws. It was cited that often a local official in China would approach a company and ask for names, but this local official isn't necessarily following China's federal laws.

But otherwise I agree, these companies are going to do what companies do and try to make as much money as possible in the immediate fiscal quarter, not pine over some freedom of speech ideals.

Or is this just that Google wants to start selling advertisements in China?

One thing that I know causes depression, or attributes to depression anyway, is just plain old exercise.

If you are a very active person, out in the sun running or doing whatever else, and then you have inactivity forced upon you, injury, too much work, being stuck in a tiny shuttle hundreds of thousands of miles from earth, or even locked in a cage while your master goes to work, the lack of endorphins can trigger depression. I know depression in general is more complex than that, but once I noticed this pattern in my own life I learned how to be a lot happier.

I believe astronauts have special exercise equipment to help prevent too much atrophy, but it can't be the same as just being able to go for a run around the neighborhood.

Also, don't give your dog prozac. Take him for more walks or find a way to fulfill his breeds work nature, barring that find a family who can.

Also I wonder if some of the difference in brain activity due to age is part of the actual typing. If you sit someone down who can type 60 words a minute in front of google, they are going to used a much different and well used part of their brain to type than someone who has to stare at the keyboard and hunt and peck.

Personally I kind of enjoy that I can type fairly quickly, I even like the feel of utilizing the skill. I believe most of the internet savvy generation can type pretty well, but I think a fair amount of our parents generation are still at hunt and peck.
