  1. why take so long. on Beatles Bite Apple · · Score: 1

I was surprised when apple music didnt sue them when they first release itunes considering there was some lead time. Apple music certainly has a right to protect their trademark, all the people saying that "you can't confuse the two" have missed the mark.

If i release a mattress tomorrow named Linux, then u better believe it's within linus's right to fight it... but I'll win because i'm in a completly different' industry... now lets say that my mattresses's become very popular, so popular that everyone know's linux's means mattresses and i release a computerized mattress... well then i've jumped on the very hollowed ground that i won my first case on.

Apple promised after taking the Apple Music trademark that they'll never get in the music industry. they know that(sosueme sound) and they did it anyway.

The reaction on slashdot would be totally different if microsoft started selling music and there was a Microsoft Music label in existance before the 80's.

  2. Focus on Advice for an Open Source Development Grant? · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you want to make an open sourced system just for the sake of it being open then you're going to have a hard time. I firmly believe that some things should be open sourced, but it's not always prudent to do so. Every situation is different and open source isn't always the answer. Companies need to make money, even the open source friendly companies release software closed source.

If you can get grant money based on the finished product then open source is a good idea, but if you need to provide a product that will be sold, i think companies will be a little more frugal handing you money to create something open.

What is it with companies expanding into unrelated industries...(ok, so they're both electronics) Shouldn't they be investing money in smaller companies or : invest it in making their own cell phones and equipment better?

  4. In Other Words on Apple Responds To iTunes "First Sale" Question · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's hard and impractical to resell individual songs that we never envisioned needing the extra clause in the TOS. Please mull over how to transfer your songs while we add the clause.

  7. Someone clear me up here.. on RIAA Offers Amnesty to File Sharers · · Score: 1

Ok, so the RIAA offers amnesty to these people after they issue the subpeonas, so they already know who the are so what's with the photo id thing.

The name on the subpeona could be grandma who pays the cable bill but never used a computer anyways, so how would her saying she won't do it anymore help the situation.. wouldn't they have to get the grandson in the family who actually does it?(ok, assume he's over 18 for arguments sake) ei, there's the rub.

Finally, what good does amnesty from RIAA do anyways, considering it's the individual labels doing the suing. It says nothing in the article about the members individually offering amnesty, although one could say it's implied, it's not specific and i would seriously be questioning such offers.

    thank you, that is all.

So let me get this straight, you're going to leave a market where you have a niche, ie: the Visor, and enter a market that's already saturated and run by Nokia, Ericson, and Motorola.

I think Qualcomm tried something similar, they should've stuck to making Eudora ;)

  12. Re:How are these made? on Sandia Builds Micromechanical 'Device Driver' · · Score: 1

It's actually pretty simple, you simply use lithography to create the pattern you want to etch, then by alternating etching and growing SiO2 you can pretty much create anything you want out of silicon. The real trick is in reducing the resolution to a few microns across.

  17. Some thoughts on RMS: Putting an End to Word Attachments · · Score: 0

Suggestions to use PDF are retarded. Acrobat costs WAY more than word, and you want to talk about secret proprietary format... jees.

Replying to users telling them to put it in RTF or another format is perfectly acceptable. Replying to users ranting about free software is not.

I hate it when people send me attachments in .wpd format, but there's this nifty converter feature in MS Word, so I live with it. I don't reply saying "What are you doing, don't you know not everyone uses Wordperfect... what a dumbass user you are."

Get off your high opensource horse, there's bigger things in this world to complain about.

  18. Hmm on Microsoft Caught Rigging ZD Net Poll · · Score: 1

I have personally had problems with IBM desktops, they are poor performing and cost way too much. IBM needs to stick to making laptops which it does very, very well.

  20. Re:Cost? on Europe Adding RFID Tags to Euro Currency · · Score: 1

It shouldn't cost $1.00 to print a $1.00 bill, that would just be ridiculous. Just as an example, the US bureau of engraving and printing prints about 37 million notes a day. Even at 20 cents per chip, that adds 7.4 million dollars to the cost of printing PER DAY, 2.7 Billion dollars a year. That simply isn't going to happen.

(I know my figures are for US Currency, but I'm only using it to illustrate the absurdty of adding this cost)

  21. Cost? on Europe Adding RFID Tags to Euro Currency · · Score: 1

Oh, and I don't want my mouse vibrating and making noise like I'm sure that one does. I think a lower-tech solution is to remove your hand from the mouse once in a while, maybe wipe in on a t-shirt, or something.. jees...

  23. Limitations on Building a Cheap Oscilloscope Using Your PC? · · Score: 1

I think that using anything but an expansion card would limit resolution and range tremendously. Not only would voltage resolution be low, but you wouldn't be able to pick up high frequencies. I can't think of a port on a standard PC that would allow you to pick up anything but small signals at low frequencies.

The expansion card that would be needed would have to be huge, the heatsink alone would be large compared to the card It would also think that it would have to connect directly to either the case powersupply or it's own. All in all, I think such an expansion card would be impractical. I'm sure you could design such a card that could operate in a small range, but one that could perform as a bench O-scope is impractical.

  24. And? on AMD, IBM Announce Transistor Advances · · Score: 1

Semiconductor companies are constantly announcing "Breakthroughs". In my eyes, I don't see them as major breakthroughs, simply an evolutionary step. McDonalds constantly fixes it's processes, changes recipies, etc.. but they don't run a commercial unless they come up with a new sandwich. Develop new materials besides Si, and SiO2 and I might just buy some stock!
