You are somewhat correct I suppose, however a domain name registration is far cry from an OS that you install on your PC at home. The tangibility of a domain name is the fact that you use it in your email address or web site or you put your web address on your company phamplets, a domain name does have tangibility in that it is a source for information, look at the power of the domain name "slashdot.org", a name is literally what you make it. We could easily say that slashdot doesn't really exist because in a sense there is no physical presence it is completely online. Your parallels you make need some rethinking.

I can hardly think of any industry where you pay 90% full price of a product and you see really no tangible "product". Granted this is the software business, but who is really saving money here, not the consumer really, only microsoft. The consumer is actually not saving anything, M$ is jacking them out of the CD, box, etc... so yeah... the price should be $10 less. Personally, I would rather pay full price for a totally new copy so I can have another backup CD of the OS in case I damage the first one.

Your absolutely right, just think your driving down the freeway and your timing belt snaps after 130,000 miles (this happened to me on my last trip back from Canada while driving through Montana last year) of driving. No problem just slowly ease your car to the shoulder of the road, turning on your hazard lights and thumb a ride. Ok now lets parallel this to a small airplane... something goes wrong in your engine (I'm not an airplane engine expert so I won't go into details, however whatever the problem is it basically shuts down your engine) no problem you assume the correct glide angle for maximum decent time based on your airplane specs and your cargo weight, this can all easily be programmed into any advanced airplane with an onboard computer. Ok, so now we are descending at a safe rate now the next step, find a safe landing strip... not so easy. What if your flying over residential or urban areas? How about over a large body of water, better yet over a treacherous rocky mountain range. You get my point, ditching an airplane isn't as simple as some would like to think, something else to think about is how many small aircraft pilots have actually practiced a ditched landing without any engine power? I knew a seaplane pilot who had the luck of such a landing, some pranksters drained the fuel out of his tanks about 1 min. after takeoff his engine sputtered to a stop, he managed to land back on the same lake just brushing the tops of the Cedars as he glided in, five feet less altitude and he probably would have been dead. The point is that driving a car and an airplane cannot even be compared, there are alot of different variables that must be considered before mass transit via small airplanes should be considered.

Unfortunately, this does work, even when the charges were perfectly valid. You would not believe how many of our customers (sometimes accidentally, their brother or someone used their CC to purchase a domain or hosting account without them knowing) call their CC company and request a charge back. 99% of the time it goes through and they get their money back. The point is a domain registration is such a small ticket item that most companies just write it off since it is too small to waste the time fighting. If for whatever reason you are being defrauded, then by all means use this method, because it does work. Even if you do make a mistake, usually the merchant or CC company eats it anyway, especially if it is a small ticket item. That is the unfortunate part about it for merchants like ourselves, but I guess it is one of the costs of doing business. Fortunately most people are honest and don't do charge backs unless there really is reason to do so.

What is even more interesting lately is they have added in a second confirmation step. They have deliberately worded the confirmation so as to make it confusing, many of our clients reply "yes" only to find out that they basically had confirmed: "Yes, I want to keep my domain registration with Verisign". When in actual fact they thought they were replying: "Yes, I want to move my domain to the new registrar". They are using every tactic in the book trying to hang onto their sagging market share, of course trying to keep everything "borderline" legal so they stay out of real trouble. If you read through the ICANN website and visit the forum section you will see how many complaints have been filed regarding this sort of treatment and unprofessional tactics on Verisign's/NSI part.

It is simply their policy to lock the domain name down, I unfortunately have to deal with it on a dail basis, as a result I have posted up a warning on our transfer page: Registrar Transfer Page
Even with this notice posted, most people ignore it somehow, then when the transfer comes back declined they want their transfer fee refunded which of course we lose money on since crediting back a credit card (even a small amount) costs us a dollar. Truthfully though you have a point, 50% of the server cases I have had shipped have been damaged, usually in route. I mean lets face it if you throw down a box with a flimsy computer case inside something has got to give. The funny thing though is the situation I had about 8 months ago, I ordered the identical case from Onvia.com and Egghead.com (not my favorite vendors, but they had the lowest price at the time). Both cases arrived about 2 days apart, both were severly damaged. However, they were shipped with different companies, FedEx and UPS. At first I thought it was just a coincidence, and my "luck".
Then when I was looking at the shipping labels getting ready to return them to their respective companies, I noticed that they have both been shipped from the same location. (Somewhere in Florida, can't remember the exact address, not that it matters). Come to find out they had both come out of the same warehouse. That seemed rather strange, then it donned on me that the shipping companies were probably not at fault here. The merchandise was damaged before it even left the warehouse. Anyhow, I contacted the warehouse after some digging and explained the situation further, (gave them my case model number: Antec SX1030) and asked them to check into it. They later contacted me and explained that one of their forklift drivers had accidentally backed into a pallet full of these cases, but had not reported it to their superior, so not knowing anything was really wrong (even though the cardboard boxes they came in looked pretty mangled to me) they had proceeded to ship that damaged goods, at least that was their story.
Long story short, I got my money back and UPS and FedEx were both exonerated.
