This is GREAT news for schools. Many schools that can finally afford to have new computers, can't afford the networking. Sure some LUG may volunteer to wire a school, but that usually just doesn't happen. Most elementry schools consist of on Mac server, with the librarian as the admin, and a bunch of clients. This is wonderful news for them!
I disagree with the second half of your statement. True, operating systems, and business apps are mostly used by corporations, but just as many games and personal apps are being pirated as MS Office. No company I know of buys copies of Quicken or Quake. When you pirate these, you are tearing away their profit margins. The less money they make, the fewer apps to market. The fewer apps, the less compition. Less compition, higher prices. Now that I look at it like that, it seems the pirates are hurting us as much as the software companies.
You make the assumption that I am some old codger who doesn't know what young people do. I happen to be a 23, and I do know what teenagers do, it wasn't that long ago since I was one. And yes, I'm also glad you aren't my daughter. In a few years when I have a child, I will not be letting him or her go see such trash. I would appreciate it if a movie theatre would NOT let my child in when I don't know about it.
I'm looking at this as an insider, not as some old man.
The rating rules were set in place to keep underage children from seeing things that they probably aren't developed enough to see. The point in having the parent there with them to see R movies is if it's worst than they thought it was going to be, to take them out. Kids are allways going to tell the parents it's not that bad. If the parent is in the theater with them, they see just how bad it really is. You have just taught those kids it's ok to lie about who you are to get what you want. Is this the part you are most proud of, or helping these kids see a movie full of violence, foul language, sex, satanism and whatever else youi can think of.
I hope you didn't think this stunt is going to make those of us who hate your writing style, like you for other reasons. Ok, so you just gained the respect of every 15year old male that reads slashdot. You just lost the respect of most of the parents that read/.
This first comment may see rather harsh but... Ok, so what's going to stop homeless and internetless people from going to the library and surfing the porn sights because they have no other way to do so? They have nothing else to do, so they could be spending a LOT of time at libraries researching porn.
And the children, the net is FULL of porn. Yesterday (at work) I was looking for a file that I knew the name of, but the server was down. So i got to ftpsearch.com Oh boy was that a mistake. Up pops a few extra windows, I figure just advertisements so I ignore them. Then I finish what I was looking for and try to close the ads. Once I closed the first, 3 more windows opened up, all on porn sites! Then as I closed them, they reopened. I ended up giving the computer a boot cause I'm at work, and I can't let this stuff be seen on my computer.
Its one thing to keep people from seeing what they want, but if this happens to a child, then what?
Ok, this is not good news for most of us current everquest players. Right now I play EQ for about 5 hours each night. The "/played" command says I've been ONLINE PLAYING my charecter for 13days 11 hours. Visually, this game isn't that advanced. It has POOR textures, and VERY blocky charecters (low poly count). It is even full of bugs with many broken quests.
Now it's got a wonderful programmer coming to work on it. I hope he doesn't make the game any better. I don't want more reasons to spend MORE TIME in front of that computer.
Yes, I was picked to beta test, but since it was originally sent to be installed on a glibc system, and I was using slackware at home, I never got around to install it. I guess I should be shot. It also had something to do with me getting my copy of everquest about the same time. Now I'm a lvl 13 wizard = ).
The EQ/played command says I've played for 8 days 23 hours and 14 minutes. Wow, I didn't even miss it, but I can't find my family.
After going to the annoy.com web site, I'm more than happy to see this come around. I personally don't want people to be able to send me, my family or my children things as disgusting as what I saw there. So bring on the censorship. Now, can we censorship Microsoft Products.
It's a large database of CD's on the internet. Stick your new CD in the computer, load a player (most are free/cheap) and it goes to the database and finds the artist/track names, and sometimes lyrics, based on the CD's serial number. It works great.
Er, www.cddb.org. Go get a player, less your already using linux, then I think the cdplayer in X does it.
The person who wrote the article for news.com just called and said that the article has been retracted. It is no longer linked from news.com, but Rob has had it linked directly, bypassing news's front page. I will more than likely remove the page, change the page, or make a pointer to something else, but the page should soon stop appearing. Please lets give him a break.
Yes, for now it beats the specs of a PC, but so did the original PSX when it came out. Soon after, if not before this thing comes out, PC's will be able to do render just as many Polys. And they STILL don't compare to the flexibility of a PC. And please not another 2x drive. Now as someone previously mentioned, if these things will double as a DVD player, and they cost 300 or less, I will get one for sure.
What good is slasdot if we don't do anything about this. We can't let the man pick on the little guy. So, let's form a petition, or a poll. Let the/. effect save Pluto!!! (What came first, pluto the planet or the dog?)
I would by any garments with/. stuff on them, especially the don't fear the penguin stuff. I'm always quoting that at work. I REALLY want a HAT! Not a cheap crappy hat with that fishnet top and plastic thingy in the back. I want a black or dark grey hat with/. or don't fear... on it. It has to be all cloth, including the resizer thing in the back with a metal clip. How about a penguin on the front, with "Don't fear the penguin" written over the hole in the back.
I don't know if used used Shoutcast yet, but sounds quality is much better than RA. Remember, these are mp3's goin' across. I can finally get something listenable with my 56k, when I couldn't with RA.
This is not for people who just want to play games. This is for people who ALREADY have a G3, and for the borderline people who say "I want a Mac, but it doesn't play any games." That is who this product is designed for. This must quadruple the amount of games available for Mac now.

You missed the point. If the console is hozed, 3 fingers aren't going to reboot it.

Hey, BSD is cool, but even it can't make a quadra fast =)
Exactly where do I send my resume?

I'm a nerd, and I enjoyed reading it. You obviously need to get out and do something besides computers...
