  1. Schools on iMac II to have LCD/Firewire/DVD/AirPort/new color · · Score: 2

This is GREAT news for schools. Many schools that can finally afford to have new computers, can't afford the networking. Sure some LUG may volunteer to wire a school, but that usually just doesn't happen.
Most elementry schools consist of on Mac server, with the librarian as the admin, and a bunch of clients. This is wonderful news for them!

I disagree with the second half of your statement. True, operating systems, and business apps are mostly used by corporations, but just as many games and personal apps are being pirated as MS Office. No company I know of buys copies of Quicken or Quake. When you pirate these, you are tearing away their profit margins. The less money they make, the fewer apps to market. The fewer apps, the less compition. Less compition, higher prices. Now that I look at it like that, it seems the pirates are hurting us as much as the software companies.

You make the assumption that I am some old codger who doesn't know what young people do. I happen to be a 23, and I do know what teenagers do, it wasn't that long ago since I was one. And yes, I'm also glad you aren't my daughter. In a few years when I have a child, I will not be letting him or her go see such trash. I would appreciate it if a movie theatre would NOT let my child in when I don't know about it.

I'm looking at this as an insider, not as some old man.

  4. Give me a break! on Feature: Ticket Booth Tyranny (Part One) · · Score: 2

The rating rules were set in place to keep underage children from seeing things that they probably aren't developed enough to see. The point in having the parent there with them to see R movies is if it's worst than they thought it was going to be, to take them out. Kids are allways going to tell the parents it's not that bad. If the parent is in the theater with them, they see just how bad it really is. You have just taught those kids it's ok to lie about who you are to get what you want. Is this the part you are most proud of, or helping these kids see a movie full of violence, foul language, sex, satanism and whatever else youi can think of.

I hope you didn't think this stunt is going to make those of us who hate your writing style, like you for other reasons. Ok, so you just gained the respect of every 15year old male that reads slashdot. You just lost the respect of most of the parents that read /.

  5. I agree with it. on Elizabeth Dole Calls for Library Net Filtering · · Score: 1

This first comment may see rather harsh but... Ok, so what's going to stop homeless and internetless people from going to the library and surfing the porn sights because they have no other way to do so? They have nothing else to do, so they could be spending a LOT of time at libraries researching porn.

And the children, the net is FULL of porn. Yesterday (at work) I was looking for a file that I knew the name of, but the server was down. So i got to ftpsearch.com Oh boy was that a mistake. Up pops a few extra windows, I figure just advertisements so I ignore them. Then I finish what I was looking for and try to close the ads. Once I closed the first, 3 more windows opened up, all on porn sites! Then as I closed them, they reopened. I ended up giving the computer a boot cause I'm at work, and I can't let this stuff be seen on my computer.

Its one thing to keep people from seeing what they want, but if this happens to a child, then what?

Ok, this is not good news for most of us current everquest players. Right now I play EQ for about 5 hours each night. The "/played" command says I've been ONLINE PLAYING my charecter for 13days 11 hours. Visually, this game isn't that advanced. It has POOR textures, and VERY blocky charecters (low poly count). It is even full of bugs with many broken quests.

Now it's got a wonderful programmer coming to work on it. I hope he doesn't make the game any better. I don't want more reasons to spend MORE TIME in front of that computer.
