If a company wants to donate to charity, fine. However, when management makes the decision without any employee input, do not say it is on the employees' behalf. At least have the decency to be honest.

Yes, a Trump presidency will increase surveillance, but not with "Muslims, immigrant families, marginalized communities, political dissidents, and journalists." Trump will add surveillance in women's bathrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, and of course, beauty pageants.

  5. And all this time I thought is was the content that made the internet unreadable.

On a more serious note, I do some web design and one of my pet peeves is low contrast on websites. I like to use black text on a light gray background (background-color: #111; or #222;). The light gray cuts down on the glare. It is not just websites that are the problem. It seems every release of Windows becomes harder to read.

  7. We Need Single-Payer on EFF Co-Founder Announces Benefit Concert to Pay His Medical Bills (twitter.com) · · Score: 2

Nobody in the USA should have to worry about paying medical bills. We need a single-payer health care system.

    A single-payer system would:
    —Cover everybody
—Eliminate co-pays and deductibles making health care affordable and accessible to everybody
—Increase freedom by allowing people to choose any doctor or hospital
—Reduce overall medical costs for the nation
—Prevent the nation going bankrupt from excessive health care costs

Eventually, we will move to a single-payer system because financially we will have no choice.

  8. Good luck with them tracking me. My phone's GPS stopped working. I have a LG G Stylo that is just over a year old, and my daughter has the same phone that is about seven months old. Both GPSs on our phones stopped working at the same time. I would be happier if I had to worry about being tracked. I really like th LG G Stylo, but T-Mobile or LG needs to step up and fix these phones. LG has a systemic problem with the GPS failing.

  9. Electronic voting machines or DREs have several problems. They are known to be insecure and easily hacked; there is no way to know if they recorded results properly; there is no way to verify the results.

Paper ballots are secure and can be recounted and verified. Even if an optical scanner is used, the ballots can still be counted by hand. It long past time to outlaw DREs and move to paper ballots

  13. Why not auto mechanics on Apple CEO Tim Cook: I'd Require All Children To Start Coding In 4th Grade (thehill.com) · · Score: 1

I think we should also require auto mechanics starting in 4th grade. This is a terrible idea. Not everybody likes coding or has the aptitude for it. It's is like the people who are pushing art or music and how much it improves academic success. Well I can't draw worth a damn and I can't carry a tune, so no matter how hard I tried, I did not do well in those classes. All they did for me was increase my stress levels.

On the other hand I was pretty good at math and science and I am a good programmer. My three children can't program, nor do they have any interest in it. However all of them are good with computers. Computers are like driving a car. You don't need to be an auto mechanic to drive a car and you don't need to be a programmer to use a computer.

If we want improve education in the USA, there is much work that could be done, such meeting basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, medical care) for poor children, or starting a second language in preschool. Trying to turn every student into a programmer is a waste of time and money.

There is nothing wrong with using COBOL. I find it verbose and would not want to use it in scientific endeavors, but for business and string data manipulation, it is fine. The question is what language is best suited for the job, and for many applications, COBOL is a good choice.

If we are going to teach Creationism in science classes--something that I am against--then we should require that it be taught accurately, which means that both creation stories in the Bible should be taught.

In Genesis 1, God creates the oceans, fishes, animals, then man. In Genesis 2, God creates the man, then the animals.

If we must teach Creationism in the classroom, then make sure to insist that the Creation Stories are taught.

The fact of the matter is that the top executives suffer no real consequences when they screw up. We need to make them pay a price when they put the public in danger.
