Perhaps this is because I'm from Europe, but I really do not understand what's the problem with porn?
Noone of us live under taliban rule to risk execution by serving some porn.
Well, designing something for addiction is nothing new, it has been going for a long time.
Two prime examples are chips (basically a thin carrier with lots of natrium-glutamate) and (ultra)light cigarette (a nicotine-addict needs a given value of nicotine - if smoking one cigeratte does not result in enough nicotine, the user will light another)
I've got 1200+ files under/usr/bin. That has caused no headache for me so far.
Anyway, if every package would have its own directory, there would be nearly 600 dirs. How would that be any better?
And, I should add,/usr/bin is not where an "application" resides. It is the place where the executables are. If you are talking about a whole application, it will have files likely at other places:/var,/etc,/home (for user-specific configuration), etc
So, this guy fails to state what is this problem (having a lot of files in a single dir is not a problem: the fs can handle that) and it is absolutely not clear how having separate dirs would give any advantage over the current situation - though it is absolutely clear what the disadvantages would be (having fscking long PATHs).
I would moderate him -1, drunk babbling, if I could;)
It should be 128 PB as 2^48 * 512 kB = 2^48 * 2^9 B = 2^57 B = 2^7 PB = 128 PB. Q.E.D.
(2^48 is the number of blocks (since 48 bit addressing is used) and each block contains 512kB of data.)
Yes, their news channels.
Look at CNN and other news sites. They are dominated with it. If you want your news, you can get it there.
/. is supposed to be a tech news site so it should report tech news.
"Programs == Data"
This is utter BS. Neumann did not prove anything in relation with this, it was just a design principle for him that code and data should be stored in the same way.
And of course, in many system there is strict distinction between code and data (e.g. UNIX's "x" flag on files, etc) --
This "end of scarcity" thing is as false as popular.
Partly, it is true - we can make practically any number of copies of a work with practically no cost.
But.
It does not mean that the original work does not have to be created. There IS still scarcity. There are NO infinite number of works, just (virtually) infinite number of copies.
Get the difference?
So, the scarcity is STILL there, it's only the distribution cost that went down remarkably. --
It is great to see such a heroic and nobble battle.
Tales about this mythical fight will be told for centuries, I'm sure.
Even Hollywood may find it worth as a base of a movie - 'Haxxor Warz':)
If your company can't get things right - leave it.
If the management is so incompetent that they can't make enough money despite the fact
that they have talented workers - then it is not your responsibility to save the company
As far as people are concerned: if they are really talented then they should find themselves
a good place instead of a "fucked company"(TM). You can try to bring them with yourself if you
feel like that they can't care for themselves:) - an experienced
team is valuable thing, many would welcome it heartily.
1. goverments tend to do everything less efficiently than private organisations - I guess much of the money would be eaten by the goverment
2. I can not image a right way to divide the tax between all the artist
(I'm not to say that the current system is much better, though)
Framemaker is not a DTP application.
It is used for editing large, structured documents - e.g. documentation for complex SW systems (I use it for that since it is the official editor to be used here), so it is a potential tool for the technically able.
And I know a great many people who run Linux AND use FM - e.g all the people in this office - suprising, eh?
And to shed some more light on the insanity of their decision, they DO support FM on other unices (HP-UX for example)
Do you still find that much sense in their decision?
I think he is right. We don't pay (at least not directly) for a lot of things - these are paid from our taxes. I believe that in a technically sufficiently advanced society free internet would be as natural as, say, free freeways are.
Their drivers are open source and the info needed to write your own driver is available too. Matrox was perhaps the first major graphics chipset manufacturer to open the specs of their stuff.
Well, there are ppl outside the USA. I guess, a DVD player based on deccs is bound to appear and the I will expect it to show up in the non-US section of Debian.
Really, I don't get your point. "not to protect the creation of illegal devices on artistic grounds", you say, but I just can't see what do you mean by it.
Code IS speech. It is a speech so exact that even a dumb computer understands it. And if we are to see any development in AI, code will get closer and closer to everyday speech. Of course, code can be hard to read (although e.g. Knuth used it extensively for demonstration purposes in his Work), esp for those that do not have much expertise - but the same applies to a lot of philosopher's (they even have the habit to define new meanings for words, basically creating their language) and yet it would be absurd to declare their books as things not covered by the First Amendment.
Mobilephones are devices of evil aliens: by the time they invade Earth, everyone's brain will be cooked, so they just have to open humans' skulls and have their dinner. It is sure this way, it was told me by Jesus.
yeah, that's the point. I think the idea itself is somewhat neat. Don't let art be consumed by market - let it thrive in itself, and think of it as something that does not pays directly, but has a great positive impact on the society (similar to freeways - they are built from your tax and they are not expected to bring any revenue) The tricky part is: who gets the money? I think most of all is to be taken by the bureaucrats - Joe Garage singing his song to his folks will be lucky if he sees a pfenning.
Framerate is not everything - in fact, I prefer picture quality over speed (of course only for some degree, but that's my preference - guess, I have a Matrox G400) It does not impress me to see 70 frames of crap in a second - not even when it is in a resolution that exceeds the capabilities of my monitor.

As the pictures are apparently CG I would say that this is fake - someone is having fun :)
It's not just executables, but all the stuff in /lib, /var, etc... how does this solves THAT?

The scary thing is that it sounds so real, so beliveable...

So, to put it short: leave!

Accidentally, the Nokia 5110 has excellent functionality (and not that flashy styling)
