You either mean consciousness (self-awareness), which other animals have been shown to have; or conscience, (awareness of right vs. wrong), which is part of abstract reasoning which does indeed make humans unique. I'll give you that, even though some researchers believe otherwise. But your argument wasn't that humans were unique, was it?

    human compassion

Define compassion. Some humans have it, some don't. Will humans ever be able to live more peacefully than, say, deer? I doubt it, but one can only hope.

    why we can talk,

Hmm. This is one of the arguments used to bolster evolutionary theory.

why we have a great capability to learn and a drive to achieve...

Because it increased our chances of survival in ancient times?

But you say, oh apes can talk and can learn, and have compassion. And I say, you are correct, so can my dog. But neither has made any great advancements in scientific research lately

You mean like the research you are currently discounting out of hand?

and my dog likes to go pee on my fence on regular basis.

    Um, my arguments end here.

    Yes, but:

    • I like to hear new music that I haven't been exposed to before.
    • NONE of the 4-5 genres of music I like to listen to is broadcast on the radio where I live.
This is reason enough for me to get it, particularly with the receiver that can move from car to home. I'm sure there are many others in the same situation.

So, the tool ensure that only sane kernel configs are built is where the real meat of the problem is. XML wouldn't be much help there.

Why do you say that? That's the whole point of XML validation. You define up front what a sane config is (THIS is the meat of the problem) and express it in a DTD or Schema. Then you could use your favorite validator to determine if it was a sane kernel or not. In fact, you could use a standard XML IDE that could enforce the DTD/Schema to make sure you CAN'T create anything but a sane kernel!

Instead, he's created another non-standard format and tool writers will have to create kernel config tools from scratch.

They're not even electric fans. No roar, no hum, not even the whoosh of air. Perhaps an occasional squeak due to bearings that need to be oiled. That's about it.
