I'm in a union. Granted I do think the US has done well to keep unions out of IT but quite frankly I think businesses should reconsider their tactics if they don't want unions to eventually muscle in and turn it around completely in the opposite direction.
I do believe unions, like business, can go to far but in a lot of circumstances among IT I think it would be necessary.
Not everyone that uses an IDE uses it to generate code for them. Those of us who don't have the world's greatest memory (especially when trying to remember the cocked up method names in PHP after using good languages) like the code competition and more importantly having all the tools I need to hand is a big bonus. With web development you don't even have to leave your IDE to view the results in a browser.
Like anything an IDE isn't best for every situation. If I were logged into my server at home I would not boot up Netbeans to write/edit a script but I don't have hangups that make me feel as if I have to use Emacs of Vim to be a real programmer either.
I find those that are worried about their title are generally those who obtained a degree and think that anything less than the title of their choice is offensive because they take their degree far too seriously or people who, for whatever reason (ie no degree or just stupid) don't feel qualified for the job and want a excellent job title to reaffirm they're doing their job right and it will help when they're caught out and need to be find a job elsewhere.
We already have numerous title for someone who does programming. Too many in fact and it's because of those two types mentioned above or companies wanting to avoid paying a decent wage by giving you a title that is hard to compare to other titles.
Why should a new xbox 360 game get a page but not the "Team Twinny" you've linked to? I would agree that they don't matter to me but if people do genuinely view their videos then they should have a page as it's quite likely that eventually someone will do a search on it and therefore the only thing wrong with that page is that it doesn't include enough content.
Wikipedia should strive to include everything which means the self promotion too as long as it provides useful content and doesn't just create a page to effectively link to their content.
There are loads of things on Wikipedia that I don't think matter at all yet they're there and I think they should be.
Mind you I only skimmed a couple pages in the tutorial but it's just a programming language adding more words and more typing because it may do something like spell out add rather than using +. That may let idiots grasp programming a bit more than they would have before but programming as it is does not require a degree in rocket science. It just requires that you actually have enthusiasm for rather than thinking it's just a way to make lots of money.
Not everyone is a programmer just as not everyone is a mechanic, painter, etc. I don't think we have a lack of programmers but a lack of dirt cheap programmers and companies will do whatever they can to lower wages. Perhaps they'd be better off make better programs to earn more profits.
They should close up their office and their next homepage image should be of a stereotypical Italian mobster chucking toxic waste into the sea for their government along with some bodies.
Seriously letting a company die off because it means Oracle will have access to a database that everyone has access to thanks to it being open source is just beyond fucking ignorant.
Perhaps this is a long overdue payback to IBM for helping the Nazis
It mentioned versions 6 & 7. Considering how long people hold onto their verison of IE, it will be ages until IE7 disappears. Also, MS does have some contracts with companies that means they're stuck on Win 2k for now which means nothing greater than IE6. Granted these companies could use FF but understandably they're paying for support from MS and want to use a browser they will support.
If MS is going to be taking money for something like this then they should still be supporting IE6 and patching up its holes.
Luckily, I've not really felt the need to add relatives to Facebook. It's mainly people I know from various forums and they don't know much more mainly because I wouldn't be silly enough to mention something like my employer's name on something like Facebook.
I think something like Facebook can be good but too many people think it's private. If you view it as never being private then you're probably going to be fine.
Facebook has so many little loopholes and you can be sharing information without realising it. I know a few people who think their accounts are locked down andyou can't view anything from their profile page. However their photo albums show up in other areas even if you can access it from their profile page. I assume they've not set the right settings for that particular album.
This is why I don't use my real name on Facebook or use my exact location. It may mean friends, relatives, etc find it harder to find me but if I want to speak to them then I'll look for them.
Computers were supposed to get rid of paper and they didn't. Phones won't either.
Gaming on a phone is awful. Unless that is properly addressed, then the likes of the Nintendo DS won't have to worry and I'm sure Nintendo isn't seeing how many DS units they're selling.
If I am going to do work during my commute it will be on a laptop or netbook, not a mobile. I suspect a lot of people feel the same way.
Decent cameras will never go away because a phone will never be able to match the feature set of the camera....even compact ones, imo.
Watches will always exist, if anything, as a fashion accessory.
'There is no such thing as "cold boot" for today's mobile PCs such as netbooks and smartbooks. You should be able to use your netbook like you use your smartphone — a press of a button and you are "on."'
Cold booting a phone will not load in less than 7 seconds or will certainly take more than 10 seconds. Comparing a phone would be like comparing the Chrome OS coming out of hibernate and he is assuming that time is the same as a cold boot.
Not that it really matters, the 3G (or less) connection is the slowest part of smartphone computing and Chrome OS will unfortunately run into this problem as well.
That assumes the FAQ spells out everything and that smoking doesn't cause catastrophic damage. I'm sure if you read the whole warranty I'm sure they can get out of anything. It would come down to arguing semantics and I'm sure they can afford better lawyers since smokers are generally low-income people.
Arcade machines receive regular maintenance, the machines weren't always there that long and even in "the old days" they often had better ventilation than most homes. Even without smoke, an arcade would have been hell without ventilation with all those heat generating machines in a closed area.
I have two cats and when I clean my computers there isn't any hair inside and minimal hair outside. I do clear my computer often but the cats also don't care for being anywhere near the computer.
Also I suspect they probably would tell you to get bent if you came in with a Mac that looked like it had a cat stuck in the fan. Alternatively if your computer just has a hint of smoke smell to it, they likely won't say anything and it's only if you trashed it due to excessive smoking.
Smoking is a legal pleasure but people also have the right to avoid smoke, nicotine residue, etc.
I'm sure they're confident that their computers can function in a normal home environment. I doubt they void warranties on any computer that happens to smell of smoke and heavily smoking in a closed house, imo, is not a normal home environment. It's down right unhealthy with the least of your worries being Apple voiding your warranty.
Apple’s One-Year Limited Warranty for MacBook excludes coverage for damage resulting from a number of events, including accident, liquid spill or submersion, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications. If damage is outside the scope of warranty coverage, service may be available through a local AASP or an Apple retail store, but all service charges will be your responsibility. In such an event, you will be asked to approve the estimated charges and accept the terms and conditions for service before authorizing the repair. If the repair is performed at an Apple retail store Apple's Repair Terms and Conditions will govern service. Repair service for a MacBook that has experienced catastrophic damage, for example extensive liquid damage or a severe impact that results in the product being disassembled into multiple pieces, is generally not available and not eligible for service.
Spilling liquids is rather common in a normal household and not covered.
You're right that they should make it clear that heavy smoking damages computers and therefore they will void warranties for smoke damaged PCs but employees have complained about third hand smoke so Apple is just covering their ass as they unfortunately have to and probably being honest where as it would have sounded better to go with the technical angle rather than admitting they didn't want to get sued by their employees.
Treating an item like shit generally does void the warranty and I do think Apple should void warranties, based on technical reasons rather than health reasons for people who are clearly heavy smokers.
You wouldn't get away with gunking up the fan with pudding, glue or whatever so why should it be ok to gunk the fan up with tar?
Whether or not it's entirely true (I don't care about small run-ins with smokers) I don't blame Apple for covering their ass and not risking having an employee sue them. From the last link:
A federal court has held that an employee whose health is adversely affected by tobacco smoke residue has a cause of action under the Americans With Disabilities Act [ADA] against an employer who refused to reduce his exposure in his workplace, and a complaint by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) recently forced a university to protect a woman and her unborn child whose health was threatened by tobacco smoke residue on the clothing of an officemate who smoked outdoors.
In the latter situation one doctor stated that "her sensitivity is also to the tobacco smoke residue on the person or clothing of a smoker, not just the smoke in the air. Therefore, to protect her health, especially during her pregnancy, she should not be assigned to an office with someone who smokes during the work day.'
Another doctor said that "smoking and second hand smoke has known effects on the placenta that carries nourishment to the baby. Therefore, to protect her health and the health of her baby, she should not be assigned to an office with someone who smokes during the workday, even if that person doesn't smoke in that room.'
In addition to these two situations in which a nonsmoking man and woman (and her unborn child) were expressly protected from third hand smoke, several courts have recognized at least by implication the right of children to be protected from third hand smoke.
Apple can't sack employees for whinging so the only thing left to do to avoid the risk is to void the warranties. For all we know employees have complained and it's not just a case of Apple being super Nazis.
I would. Not everyone takes offense to sarcasm. Some find it funny even if it's aimed at them. It's that way with any joke. Some people can take it and some can't.

I agree it should provide more information and said originally that it shouldn't effectively just be a link through to their content.
The page is lacking but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have a page. They should but they should provide much more information.
Why should a new xbox 360 game get a page but not the "Team Twinny" you've linked to? It will have to taper off at some point and as most information get put in there then some people will wander off.
I don't think the fact the admins generally seem to be assholes helps much but it would have happened without them.
Mind you I only skimmed a couple pages in the tutorial but it's just a programming language adding more words and more typing because it may do something like spell out add rather than using +. Surely these are worse than the one that caused a fuss.

What's going to happen to those? Someone might see them and be upset and the world will collapse.
They should close up their office and their next homepage image should be of a stereotypical Italian mobster chucking toxic waste into the sea for their government along with some bodies.
It wasn't even a good name either. They should have renamed french fries to something more appealing, like titty fries or coke & whores fries.
Seriously letting a company die off because it means Oracle will have access to a database that everyone has access to thanks to it being open source is just beyond fucking ignorant.

If you want to run it as little power tripping club then don't be surprised when everyone gets fed up with your shit and leave.

Their full warranty and repair terms can be found online but just from the FAQ ( http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/service/ ) it states:
