I think old netbooks were more durable. They had no hard drive and they were fairly minimal. Now netbooks are just little laptops and often with a hard drive. It's not really a netbook anymore but a little laptop with all the same laptop problems and put in a smaller space so they're likely more susceptible to heat problems.
Problem is that it sounds like there are a fair few affected and that's only the ones they found. Where as you can go to Chrome which will run faster and likely be more secure.The only thing I need FF for is Quake Live because I can't be bothered to create a Chrome shortcut to fake my agent.

A decent talk between knowledgeable employees and potential candidates can filter out the crap. Decent testing helps too. If they know they stuff I don't really care if they learned it off the back of cereal box or not.

Anyone with any serious intention of doing things write won't let their page be hindered by CSS and it's dead easy to shove a good portion of your Javascript to the bottom of the page to be executed last. This is good for numerous reasons but most importantly because any slow third party JS won't stop the user from using the page.
