If he's complaining then he needs to explain why it's bad. Who knows, maybe he's onto something but if he's just some "straight out of uni" brogrammer, then put him in his place.
I can live with upscaled DVDs / blu-rays. It'll be worth it having something that bad ass and it would mostly function as a second monitor if I could afford one.
Valve's Steambox is more likely to hard the 360 than the PS3 or Nintendo. The reason being is because the PC doesn't offer anything Nintendo does and both Sony and Nintendo have way more exclusives than the 360. The xbox 360 is also quite unpopular outside of North America. Because of that Sony still managed to catch and finally pass the 360 despite being more expensive, initially having fewer games and all the bad press about it's online service.
Not only that any gamer it draws away from the 360 potentially takes them away from Windows too as this is just a PC. Unlike now where if Steam steals customers from the 360 it would be placing them on windows.
Gabe made it clear he feels Windows 8 is a threat to his business (especially the app store) so now he's being all anti-windows despite the fact he was all too happy to support windows for the longest time. So I wouldn't be that surprised if Microsoft makes him a sweet deal in some way and he accepts.
They're making a PC and not only that they're already planning for people to install windows on it. So it sounds more like this is a half assed move to piss of Microsoft.
This will fail just like every other cheap android console solution. These people don't get console gaming. They assume consoles are just cheap PCs so therefore making the cheapest POS equates to a win and it won't.
Mono isn't 100% compatible with everything you can do in.Net and it lags behind. It's not the worst solution but it's not perfect. I still don't think its wise to put faith in Mono if you want a cross platform development platform.
Windows Forms 2.0 is also supported, but not actively developed, and as such its support on Mono is incomplete.
Mono's aim is to achieve full support for the features in.NET 4.0 except Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) (which the Mono team do not plan to support due to the amount of work it would need), Entity Framework and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), limited Windows Communication Foundation (WCF). Some missing parts of the.NET Framework are under development in an experimental Mono subproject called Olive.
Not to mention if the current developers give up on it, what guarantee is there that anyone will even care to pick it up? With Java you have a far better guarantee it will stay cross-platform and it's a complete implementation across all platforms.
If you think.Net/Mono is a viable solution then Objective-C certainly is. It's supported on Unix platforms and Windows. It may not be on Android but why would use want to use anything other than Java to make Android malware?
You are right. Node has that and node is definitely handy in some cases but client javascript, imo, is still the biggest part of the JS community and as a developer I would like to see a quality repository that allows me to search for JS libraries that may or or may not be part of a framework and it would be great if they could be rated and reviewed.
It's worse than perl if only because it lacks namespaces. That and it lacks a CPAN. There are some lib repositories but unfortuantely the average JS lib is of questionable quality. Often you're better off writing your own code.
It's awful for large scale projects. That's why things like GWT exist or why people have about a hundred other ways to write anything but JS and have it compile to JS.
Some people act like that's cool and JS gets to be the web assembly but it's not cool. It's a hack job because JavaScript sucks for large projects. It wasn't intended for that and no one is willing to really improve the language or add another language that does a better job for larger tasks.
All three providers it's a completely hit or miss thing depending on where you live. There are businesses in the UK that google maps don't mark properly at all or they just have really poor satellite images while the others don't. But the same goes for all of them because they all get their data from different sources that prioritise differently.
That's why it would be better if more people / companies would get behind open street maps and create a definitive map data set that everyone can use.
The whole redesign of google.com is a bit shit. They moved a lot of easy access stuff on the left into a dumb smaller menu at the top that hides half the stuff away. Seriously, why is news hidden in a dropdown? Why waste 1/3 of the screen and put nothing there because I might want to look at a tiny unreadable thumbnail of a cached web page?
It feels like Google is at that point that they're just changing things for the sake of changing them.
I assume this is some sort of attack on Google given they're the biggest advertiser on the internet. Does anyone know more about the reasoning behind this? I can't believe it's just to help their customers.
Some of us don't like the idea of corporations eventually holding patents on all our food. Sorry but if we can't sustain ourselves without giving up something so basic then we need fewer people on the planet.
So google is slowly closing it up, they snoop on me, their phone is full of malware and it's fragmented. Sounds like a real winner!
At least with all the other platforms you know where you stand. With Android it seems you never know when Google will up and change anything. If I were a developer or hardware company that would concern me.
The ribbon is pretty horrible. The only reason Microsoft can get away with it is because they have no competition. People have no choice but get used to it. Any UI is usable if you're forced to use it long enough. The whole point of Win 8 is to lure back people who rather play on ipads and android devices so we know these people obviously won't just sit there and suck it up and eventually get used to it.
The charms are only one of the problems and as he mentioned and how will anyone know win+c brings it up? Given how few people use well known commands like cut and paste, suggesting that people use win+c isn't very helpful.
So if someone sets up a computer for me or I borrow a computer or I'm like most people and skip the slow boring tutorial then I'm fucked?
Keep in mind Microsoft is one of the companies that pushed to kill off instruction booklets in games because apparently no one wants instructions. They just want to jump in. Therefore the game has to be more obvious and they can skip the manual. So why doesn't that apply to their other software?
You say that but what did Android offer over iOS? It's confusing because it looks different and can behave differently depending on who you get it from. It was incredibly buggy for the longest time, getting updates isn't consistent and it does have more malware.
Of course openness only appeals to a small number of people but these are the people that will talk about it the most and create hype and if Ubuntu create something that provides openness while making it a more consistent and better experience than Android then they'll do well.
Also if they improve security over android that will help. Android does get a lot of people buying their phones but it also has a higher level of customer dissatisfaction. in fact in some results, Windows phone ranks higher than Android.
So basically all around it looks like there is a lot of dissatifaction amongst Android users and they're not overly keen on having an android phone. Maybe that's why they don't really buy apps or surf the net unlike iphone users.
So let's not pretend Google has perfected the mobile phone and no one should else should try. Again openness does mattter to get in the people who will get all fanboyish about it and promote it and if they can make something that also a superior user experience then they'll do well.
Perception isn't necessarily the truth and nothing will change that perception if you're biased against Oracle.

Rails is a vulnerability. Using it is like using PHP so don't count on security.

Seriously, a $1000 console that has the expectation of being upgraded? Valve doesn't quite get console gaming it seems.
Poor people voting for themselves - lazy assholes. Rich people voting got themselves - ok!

I like the number 9 so let's go for 900.

As you can see it's all quality reporting well worth the 300 per link.
