I believe they gave Acer shit and Acer weren't even calling their phone Android. But that said Android is already a confusing mess where buying a phone from a certain provider doesn't mean it will be the same as a phone from another. You can't say how many, if any, updates you get because it depends entirely on which one you buy.

If Ubuntu can tackle that then that's yet another bonus.

I assume if you make it available to friends and their account is wide open then you're in trouble but I'm not sure you can do much about that without asking friends to change their settings.

I think there are some questions about that on both facebook and google plus which is why I don't use my real name and don't talk about personsal things.

That doesn't help with publically accessible material that gets indexed by Google. Secondly, Facebook does have that sort of functionality and it had it before Google. The only thing google did was simplify things to give potential users the impression they care about your privacy, which, imo, is a bit of a joke.

  9. Stupid summary on Chromebook Takes Top Place In Laptop Sales On Amazon · · Score: 1

It's only one website even if it's one of the biggest places to buy things online. It also doesn't show numbers. The Chromebook might have sold 10 units, the Mac 8.

There are 3 Macbooks on the list. One at the number 2 place another at 4. There are two Chromebooks, one at 1st place and one at 19th. It's a pretty safe assumption that more macs are sold than Chromebooks. It's also safe to say there are more windows laptops sold too.

If most people are replacing it with Ubuntu or returning it because they didn't realise it's a shitty OS that requires an internet connection then that doesn't say much for ChromeOS.

ChromeOS will die. No one wants it. That is why Google is resorting to dumping it on schools. Schools seem to be really stupid and will be any old POS.

It depends if it's cased as a computer or just a standard electronic device. There are plenty of phones, calculators, media players, etc that are build with the intention of them never being extended or having their software modified. We should try to keep computers open but I think it will be a huge struggle given that most devices don't have the same expectations and most people don't care about it.

  19. The problem with robots on Krugman: Is the Computer Revolution Coming To a Close? · · Score: 1

It's all well and good to replace the bulk of work with robots but then you either have a massive angry poor population and will need to impose birth restrictions among other things.

Or all those jobless people become supported by the robots and people don't need to work. That poses problems because wealth becomes meaningless (the rich won't be happy about that) and you still need to impose restrictions. Not everyone can just have a new tv whenever they want or travel whenever. We don't have unlimited resources. A lot of people are pretty simple. With no work how will they fill up their day? They may breed more which also cause resource problems so we need to still restrict births and it limits the need for medical advances. Too many births and longer lives again put a strain on everything.

I think people in the west think we have more resources than we do because they live in the best parts of the world and get first dibs on everything. So unless we're ready to bring back Hitler's ideals we have too many problems to fix before robots can do everything. Even the west is looking at some big energy cost rises in the near future. This robot utopia may come eventually but I really doubt it'll happen in our life time even if you're a child unless we solve some much bigger problems first.

That said they do appear to be getting better at it and as someone who owned a G1, android was a bit shit in the beginning too. If Microsoft keeps copying the right things and make it work well enough they could get lucky. Maybe they won't but Microsoft is still a compeitotor on office software too and they're very slowly getting into social media (too late imo but they're doing it) so all around they're making attempts at things that Google does where as Facebook just has Facebook.

I'm still not sure that's the case. Google is in more trouble if Microsoft gets mobile devices right. The only thing outside of search/advertising that google have done well and can fall back on is mobile devices. Anyone who can take that away from them is a pretty big threat. They've just been lucky that Apple only cares about the high end of the market and Microsoft has largely been useless in portable computing.

Facebook does indeed do advertising but given how many complaints there have been to how useful it actually is, I just can't see it growing leaps and bounds outside of their own sites. If Facebook do a phone it'll probably be Android based making it easier for Google to cause them problems. I can't see FB making their own mobile OS or forking Android and maintaining their own seperate branch.

There is no intelligence behind it otherwise they'd realise I'd never click on an ad for gambling. The only thing they have is a large audience and some claim they have a lock-in since people have put their lives into their system but the same thing could have been said about MySpace. Microsoft is losing some relevance but at least they still have products that people need and won't be as happy to replace.
