    Not sure I'd want to help someone leverage their desktop monopoly to kill off even more third party developers nor do I really trust someone who gets security wrong more often than they should.

    HTML5 is quite good when someone implements it properly. Not everyone wants Google sticking their nose in everything they do. This is a good alternative.

    Yet they still do shit like this and file BS patents. From what it sounds like they're claiming in the patent, just about everything from Trillian onwards has done this so there's prior art. Then there is that anonymity patent.

    These people complain about things like how save icons look like floppies but offer no good solution. They just want people to think they should have to design something completely new for every little change because, funnily enough, that means work for them.

    I remember during the 32 & 64 bit era a lot of people would mention console performance vs X-rays. Big deal, it's old hardware. Of course new stuff is more lots of power in a much smaller bit of kit.

    Exactly. The power consumption, lack of heat and lack of moving parts are the big sellers. The performance boost is just a nice bonus. I just simply refuse to buy a laptop that doesn't have an SSD and I replaced my perfectly fine Thinkpad R60's HD with a 256gb SSD. It's better than when it was brand new.

    Google believes in freedom of speech unless there's a slight hint of it having an effect on their profits. So basically freedom of speech only has PR value to them. So that makes them just like any other corporation. No real surprise there.

    The need to upgrade computers is almost non-existent if you didn't buy the cheapest, lowest spec'ed machine. Mobiles and tablets have the benefit of contracts and or lower specs that mean people will upgrade them more often. But the fact is as well most people are not geeks and they don't really care about the hardware. They care about the tasks. They want something that works like a VCR and not something they can hack and tweak.

    Everyone uses computing devices of some sort now so it only makes sense most hardware goes towards devices that the average person prefers which would be a self contained easy to use device.
