I like to keep a local backup (not the machine I use but external to it) and remotely. I don't put everything remotely because some of it I can live with losing so I don't want to pay for it but that gives me a lot of stuff in 3 locations. My PC in use, a backup drive and a server. I'd have to be pretty unlucky to lose all of them at once.
I do agree he's right in some cases and yeah you should back-up locally too but most people don't do that. Having a remote backup is probably the only way they'll get a back-up and his point stands when you use services like Steam or Spotify where you don't really own anything but that really only applies to some things in the cloud and often where you rely on services that are free or just generally too good to be true.
I backup at home and remotely. What's the point of only backing up in one place? Your host could go up in flames or your house can go up in flames. I think he's missing out on that and is assuming that storing things in the cloud only means storing them on questionably secure services like dropbox.
All those things depend entirely on what services you use and if you think the government won't just come in and take your shit from you home when they want it then you're living in fantasy land. Of course if you dump all your stuff on dropbox it's not that safe but imo that's what you get using a free service.
Most of my proof of purchase is setting right on my shelf. The other half is my amazon order history so I'm not too worried about that and I generally try to avoid hosting any content in the US where the government gets free reign over everything. I'm not saying it'll be perfectly safe anywhere else but nothing is 100% safe even if it's within your home.
Plus if my place burns down at least I'll have a copy of a lot of my content. I'll have to recollect the porn but I'm not paying to host that backed up somewhere.
I'd say you're incorrect and relying on some sort of stereotype that if people don't like Facebook they're a loser or a moron or whatever given that most people, even just in western countries, don't have a facebook account at all and I don't think the sort of people you add has much bearing on the content other than saying people who are obsessive about it probably do more sorts of communicating on Facebook than your average person. Of all the people I've friended on facebook, the vast majority are great to talk to in person and no, none of them play D&D or WoW. But on Facebook they generally have nothing of interest to say so the vast majority of my conversations with them are still via phone or in person which I'm ok with.
I would say your assumption is wrong and if you think you have 425 friends then you, imo, are using the term very broadly. I can live with the fact that perhaps I'm using the term too narrowly but the list of people I know or even communicate on a somewhat regular basis is much larger than the people that I would class as friends. It's not that I dislike the other people, I just think they should be classed as friends. They're acquaintances or people I'm on good terms with but not necessarily people that I would, for example, lend money to without question.
If you're happy using it then good for you but it hasn't brought anything new to the internet and imo it's not even the best outlet for being creative. MySpace arguably was but I guess you can argue that's why so many people had butt ugly pages.
I just don't quite trust a site that has a questionable record on privacy and who has no gone public with their stock prices sinking and reports coming out claiming their advertising business is a bit questionable in terms of money for value. I think we will see them abuse people's data more in the future. If you're happy with that then fine. I prefer to keep pretty much all my data off of there and in a place where, when I delete it, I know it's gone.
If Facebook guaranteed that when you deleted things, including your profile, that it went away for good I think that alone would be reasonable trade-off for collecting and using user's data as they wish while they're using the product. But I've still not read or seen anything that implies that you can actually delete anything permanently.
Speaking of which I don't watch TV but I do own a TV. it certainly the most affordable 40 inch monitor and why would I want to game on a tiny ass 20 inch screen just to have a "true" monitor?
I never said that socialising on the internet is a bad thing. It's one of the main things to do on the internet. So it doesn't require a site specialising in socialising. My point is if all you do is advertise shit you like or where you are then you're not really socialising which, yes, is more or less what I am doing too but the key difference is I'm chatting to people when they contact to me through it and privately. They're just feeding advertisers money and announcing when it's best to rob their house. Going to London isn't a big fucking deal if you live in the same flipping country. Though I will say it's a step up from people announcing they've ordered something from Dominos.
Yep, that's what I said. For the time being. I've got it through most people's heads I don't want to and I'll eventually get the others to or ignore them.
Don't rely on freebies then. It's only a couple bucks per month to use rackspace's email services and a couple bucks per year for a domain and you can use it how you want. It's acessible to most people. For those with more ability run your own server. But if you're using a free service don't be surprised if they want you going to the site and looking at ads.
Yeah because the true genius that is Woz went on to do so much later in life and it's not like he's still collecting a paycheck from the big bad evil Apple.
Look, I like the guy too but just because he's ignored / unknown by most people doesn't mean he's the greatest fountain of knowledge. It could just mean he's happy doing very little while sitting on his big ass pile of money as i probably would be too.
There is nothing wrong with storing data or doing tasks on the internet. Like anything else being overly reliant on it or using it where it doesn't make sense is dumb. However things like the nearly $5,000 per hours super computer set up on Amazon for cancer research is isn't something easily achievable on physical hardware. Not because it's not possible but because it's pretty fucking expensive.
Even simple things. It made sense ot put files, like MP3s, I wanted access to on an FTP site and it makes more sense for me to put them somewhere more acessible to more of my devices. Some of us leave our mother's basement so it's nice to have things off our desktop.
We buy the games and it's our right sell them. The game industry should quit being so damn greedy. If used game sales genuinely hurt them then they're living beyond their means. That's their problem not ours.

I'd argue European mobile phones are just that. Give that it's the one thing that is cheaper here than in the "free" market US. The idea that you have to pay for a phone on a contract and still get less from the contract (and probably have to pay to recieve calls) despite have far lower sales taxes and a more corporate friendly atmosphere says you're getting screwed.
I forgot to point out, obviously hot dogs aren't expensive meat. That is my one cheap meat but hot dogs at a BBQ still seem far better than quality sausages, imo.
I realise when I eat hot dogs the contents of the hot dog is probably far more disgusting than any bug but I'm not eating bugs. I don't eat *that* much meat anyway. I'll pay the premium and mostly each veg. I suspect it won't be that different given that I don't buy cheap meat anyway. There's something wrong if the meat you're buying is cheaper than cat food.
It sounds like she thought this was something of meaning but, imo, it's not. It's not even really social. From what I can see, it doesn't matter how many "friends" people have. They often don't chat to each other. They talk about themselves and hopefully get a lot of people telling them how awesome they are. That's probably because most people don't have real friends on facebook. It's a list of people that decided to friend them for no good reason or because they met once or twice. It's impossible to have 500 actual friends.
So most interactions on facebook aren't really socialising. That patting each other on the back (or blowing each other depending on how far you take it) and to be honest I think the days of geocities were more social. People made websites with interesting content that would spark conversation even if were just between you and the author via email. I'd genuoinely say the vast majority of content I see people posting on FB is no interesting, it's not remotely deep or thoughtful. it's shit like announcements that someone likes amazon. Well good for you, you're like 99% of the population.
I don't really like having an account which is reflected in the fact I don't use my own name or talk about myself. It's there basically to keep in touch with some people which unfortuantely think there is no other way to keep in contact on the internet and since they're family it's a bit more awkward to tell them to suck it up and use email like a normal person. Though I feel that day coming up pretty soon.
I think that happened to me once during the first rapid release. Since then it's not been an issue at all. But also can't stand still because there may be a handful of plugins that break out of thousands. It would never progress given many plugins aren't looked after on any sort of regular frequency.
Microsoft will do what they can to kill OpenGL because it's using is yet another step out of their lock-in. Not surprisingly they aren't supporting WebGL. Granted that's not a huge issue now but I suspect they'll fight it even after it takes off big time.
No, it shows the myths that DirectX is vastly superior are false and since you can use OpenGL on any platform except maybe WP7 that is the reason you should use it.
Are they some of the most iconic ads ever? Nope, not all Apple ads are. They're not the worst ads either. They're just average imo. But now eveyone is aparently talking about them and making them more valuable than they should be. So I guess they're better ads than I would have assumed.
Given how poor people's basic math is, I don't think Algebra is the problem. I'd say if anything there isn't enough focus on math in general and that needs to be improved rather than taking math away.
No one said piracy didn't exist. It was much slower for people. yes you could be university or happen to have loads of friends into PC gaming too which would allow you to acquire plenty of games for free but it's not the same as virtually every customer having access to the pirated version on the day of release. I know if I want a game for free now it's certainly easier to do than the days before the internet.
I don't think the internet killed shareware. It just because impossible to do. I remember the Kingpin demo and everyone complaining because it was like 600mb.
I even waited for the PC gamer disc and the Kingpin demo was awesome but I think we just had a weird period where demos, let lone a 1/3 of the game as a demo just wasn't possible. We could probably go back to that but no one asks for it.

Facebook has proven people are happy to harrass or say retarded things even under their real name.
