A seat belt isn't even necessarily to protect yourself but to protect others from you. So I'm not sure that analogy works. Also you'd have a point if there was clear proof that going with SAP or any other buy-in clearly worked better. That is far from the truth. I've seen it go wrong and come in late numerous times. Then when shit goes wrong it can't be fixed asap because there's zero talent within the company and you pay through the nose to get someone to fix it for you.

I suspect more people used it than you think but it's a person thing. People don't talk about it much. iGoogle clearly conflicted with G+ which means Google wasn't going to let it live even if everyone used it. Just like Google reader, if it's not going to help Google take on FB then it goes. There's a whole market now of apps and sites that act as a feed manager. It's certainly popular enough for people to invest their money into entering the market.

Apple is a hardware company and now don't make money on OSes not sold with the hardware so what makes you think they'd want to shoot themselves in the foot? You can install what you want on a mac but osx is mac simply because they just want to sell hardware. If you want freely installable unix software use Linux. There's nothing wrong with it.

  12. Re:Personally on Most IT Workers Don't Have STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) Degrees · · Score: 1

That's the problem. People who don't know any better set the bar. The vast rise in degrees in IT hasn't seen an equal return in the quality of code. The interview processes are the most broken part of IT hiring. But it might cost money to fix that so it's just easier to off-load the cost to the employee, make them get a degre and hope for the best and just make them redundant when it doesn't work out.

Also, 78.2 million (as of June 30, 2013) 360's have been sold and 75 million (as of February 8, 2013) PS3s. Out of all those potential customers, Rockstar sold around 3.5 million in the US and 250,000 in the UK. Even if globally you round that up to a generous 5 million, that's still almost half of the number of iphones sold and an insignificant percentage of the over all potential market. Sure, their profit numbers are good, they're clearly making a huge chunk off each game, like Apple does for each phone but their actual physical units sold aren't that impressive compared to the iphone sales.
