I have spent hundreds of hours alone in the deep woods. Yes, there is a minute chance that such a device would save you, but it would totally destroy the wonderful sense of self confidence you get when you get yourself out of a tight spot. I don't mean that you will use the radio to get out of the tight spot, but that you will always know that you could have. You were never really alone, relying on no one but yourself. Take a mirror, signal flare, and a whistle to direct a search party if you must. Remember, you are responsible for yourself in the woods, be carefull and thoughtfull. The satisfaction you will get bringing yourself home will more then reward the risk. And if you can't get yourself back, why should anyone go in and get you? Leave an itenerrary with a friend so they can come looking for you if you don't return; don't involve strangers.

Marriage between 2 people solves a lot of problems. If one is hurt the other can make decisions for the other. If one dies the property remains with the remaining spouse. Add an additional person and opportunity for conflict and the need for judgments is created. Additionally, polygamy like that practiced in the Middle East causes social problems. Male and females are very nearly equal in number so when rich old men buy multiple wives it drives poor men out of the "market". These young men become disaffected and may become terrorists or criminals since they have no hope of finding a permanent mate (of the opposite sex).

No. Under a libertarian system the company polluting would be held responsible for all of their damages. It they were truly polluting they would be sued out of business pretty quick. And the owners of that business would all be criminally liable as well, and could face criminal charges of say manslaughter if their pollution killed someone. Sounds like a lot more accountability then the current system provides. I haven't heard of anyone charged with the deaths of the gulf oil rig workers.

When I build up a Windows machine I allocate 3 days to getting everything working, tweaking the settings to my liking, installing software and AV (and rebooting at least once per each). When I am finished I have a machine that will run forever if you don't add or upgrade anything, even at an elementary daycare. When I install Ubuntu I figure about an hour for a mostly hands off install, then 2 hours to let updates run. Maybe an hour tweaking the UI. I have built many machines, maybe hundreds; I know which OS wastes my time and it isn't UNIX based.

My wife runs an after school daycare, where she and her staff help with homework and tutoring. Math is a big problem for the kids. She finds that lots of kids are stuck on addition and subtraction when their classes are in multiplication and above. These children should not have progressed without the needed knowledge. She also sees problems given with no instruction, and very little usable information in the textbook. As an engineer, I can sometimes work out what they are trying to teach and it is usually some obtuse math principle completely irrelevant to the course. These teachers do not know their subject material, most of them don't comprehend math at all, they are just rote teaching the "method" they were given. When I was in school I thought a science lab and one summer I had a group of teachers taking my class to maintain their accreditation. They were seriously annoyed that I expected them to learn the science. The common refrain was "We don't want to learn how this works, we just want to learn how to teach it". As long as they have that mindset there will be no progress.
