    Alexander Hamilton (the first Treasury secretary, the guy on the $10), thought some national debt was useful because the debt-holders would want the government to remain stable enough to pay them back. Have no idea what he'd think of the massive national debt today.

    Can't really fault him for no-nonsense upfront detailed planning. A lot of it is garden-variety logistics, but even when he's discussing issues related to his ideological zealotry, at least he's being clear what he expects.

    I figured some folks may get cable/satellite whether or not it's really necessary for them.

    many NFL games are on over-the-air TV: the Sunday evening game on NBC, various Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX.
    Do they often want the Monday night game (ESPN)? Do the local stations tend to not broadcast the Sunday afternoon games they want?

    However, back on topic, if the problem is with reading your own Python code, could you add the braces as comments? or is the problem with other peoples' Python code?

    I started with Python, and I was struck by how the syntax was relatively close to natural English. Someone said it looked like BASIC, even.
    Python: Relatively easy for newbies to pick up on, while still being a full-powered general-purpose language

    Having an all volunteer force pretty much assures public indifference to the war (IMHO)

    Yes, there does seem to be an attitude of "well, those in the military did sign up for it, they should know what you're getting into."

    Some anti-war types see military volunteers as part of the problem (as well as or instead of seeing the common soldier as amongst the victims of war)

    I figure some do enlist with misconceptions about the military (thanks to salesman behavior from recruiters?). Educational efforts to clear up these misconceptions do make sense.

    Yes, Lieutenant is a commissioned officer rank. However, maybe there's an analogous point since Lieutenant is the lowest of the commissioned officer ranks.

    not allowing them to cross state lines would clearly fall within Congress' power to regulate interstate commerce.
    this is as opposed to regulations within the state, which state governments might involve themselves in to varying degrees.

    even cheap restaurants like fast food joints seem a lot more expensive than cooking at home, let alone regular restaurants or fancy places.

    FWIW, 14 pounds is 22 dollars or so. Could easily do a burger meal for 4 at home for a bit less than $10, about half of the McD's estimate.
    Homemade burgers taste much better anyway. :)

    Cooking even simple stuff like burgers yourself is a huge help in terms of both food cost and health.
    Pasta, pancakes and French toast are a few other examples.

    Note that I said "such as those three", if we tried to make a comprehensive list we'd be here all day. One could certainly add Euclid to such a list.

    true, major historical figures such as those three had _much more of_ a positive impact than Jobs, and our celebrity culture would do well to remember that. However, that's not to say that Jobs was negative.

    US legal tender law means that once a debt has been created, legal tender must be accepted in payment.
    "debt" includes a sale agreed to but not yet paid for.
    If the buyer and seller agree to an exclusion or limitation beforehand, then it's OK. Not sure if state law can mandate such terms beforehand.
    (A store with a sign saying "no $50s or $100s" would be an example of a limit the seller mentions ahead of time which the buyer agrees to by making a purchase anyway.)

    Environmentalism often seems a left-wing thing, military enthusiasm often seems a right-wing thing. (There is common ground and crossover, but maybe not enough for critical mass of a synthesis like this.)

    For example:
    during the process of repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell: some pro-gay doves seemed confused (as well as anti-gay hawks for that matter)
    Om my campus, the Environmental Science offices are right next to the ROTC offices. (One of the enviro sci profs pointed out that military secure areas often incidentally end up as nature preserves.)
