Why do the redvsblue videos have such a bad compression ratio for such bad quality video? I mean the file size is just comparatively huge. Not to mention that the movies are framed up and down by large black strips.
I've seen recompressed DivX videos of these same movies in much smaller size elsewhere on the net.
Have you been to www.ximian.com lately? Not even a decent announcement of Evolution anywhere. Even on GnomeDesktop.org the cold reception and reaction to the new Evolution was puzzling.
The project is too big, ambitious and lofty. It's just bound to collapse sooner or later IMHO. I don't think anybody/really/ wants to relearn how to deploy Linux anyway.
Right, Mal. There are many other similarities as another poster pointed out in this thread. And sure you could say the Trance character was split into Kaylee+River.
FireFly is the realised version of a western in space Kevin Sorbo always wanted the Andromeda show to be.
Compare these characters for starters:
Matt --> Dylan Jayne --> Tyr Sheperd --> Rev Bem Kaylee --> Trance (both Canadian girls who played in similar kid shows incidentally)...
Lots of similarities with tweaks for the particular environment and setting of Firefly. And of course, Firefly is miles ahead of what Andromeda became.
Argh various typos. What I meant to say is that SUSE Personal goes with the less is more philosphy, while SUSE Professional goes with the swiss-army knife policy.
Basically, pick your poison. It sounds like Joe Barr made the wrong choice and is unjustly ranting about it.
He doesn't say whether he reviewed SUSE 9.1 Personal or Professional.
Fact is, it sounds like he reviewed SUSE Personal which is geared to novice users and with the "one task, one app" philosophy. No wonder it has only KDE and various spit-and-polish suitable for novices. By cutting out the cruft SUSE because all the more usable for this demographic.
Fact is, Joe Barr isn't a novice user so he's going around looking for stuff that isn't there. SUSE 9.1 Personal provices a swiss-army knife selection of choices including GNOME. So he should use Professional instead of Personal if that's what he's looking for.
Actually I think this temporary. With KDE having been adopted for SUSE 9.1 Personal (Professional still has GNOME), it's only a matter of time before they adopt KDE/Qt# which has recently been checked into CVS BTW.
Well, you have to know what you're doing indeed. I've got everything working on Mandrake 9.2 plus my own addition and changes. Even the winmodem works.:-)
Correction: A major feature doesn't work properly in Linux 2.6. Can't get suspend and hibernate to work properly with the latest ATI driver.
> it will need new binary drivers from ati/nvidia.
JESUS CHRIST! Does it really have to be such a radical redesign? This is terrible... How the hell are we going to explain this massacre to ATI/NVIDIA?
IMHO we need a fork of XFree86 up from the license change. Unfortunately there's no developers...
Update on Novell/Ximian/SUSE situation
on
Review: KDE 3.2
·
· Score: 5, Interesting
It's only fair since Nat and Miguel started their rumors here to post this.
This is big news folks. Apparently SUSE has a much stronger say on the Novell Desktop than what we were led to believe by Miguel and Nat.
The KDE/Debian effort is already going on and strong. UserLinux on the other hand is a vapourware project. KDE/Debian effort already has code in CVS and is nearing the release of a LiveCD.
First of all this is old news, there is no continuing debate. This is old stuff.
Second of all, the Qt license discussion is completely moot. Have you even read the proposal? KDE is integrating GTK+ to allow LGPL development.
Third of all, Bruce Peren's project is vapourware unlike the KDE/Debian project which is well under way independent of UserLinux. Just look at the latest KDE-CVS-Digest and you see already Kapture and KDebConf coming out of this.

So Java seems to be less encumbered than .Net at this point.

Look at SUSE 9.1 Personal, it *only* includes KDE as a desktop. It does have GTK apps such as the GIMP and non-KDE apps OOo integrated into KDE.
I think this is what they mean. They will integrate GTK into KDE.

Is that why Suse Personal 9.1 only has KDE on it?

Personally I'm outraged Janet had a piece of metal covering her nipple. That's complete bullshit.
Works perfectly on my Compaq Presario X1000
Period.
You don't have to GPL a Free Qt program.
BSD is more than acceptable. Pretty much anything Open Source is okay in fact for Free Qt.
Or do I still have to use mplayer for that?
If it can't save the streams, it's basically worthless...
I just got a wireless Ad-Hoc network using iwconfig on Linux.
How do I tell iwconfig not to broadcast the essid?

Where is the GNOME proposal? Where are the people doing the GNOME work? Nowhere. KDE/Debian is already doing great on its own.
