It must be a cultural thing, but...

Do you have to reduce EVERYTHING to dollars and cents?

Have you heard of principles, dignity, pride?

Who said that you have to bend over backwards to satisfy your clients? I'd hate to have these clients. Mine are satisfied with a good deal, and I mean good to both parties.

    Why not?

If your clients tell you to bend over, you bend over? You seem to have a very sad life. Grow some spine, explain things to them, and you'll be surprised about how many of them get it.

    And, in case you wonder,

    I'm not a student.
    I own a business.
And yes, I'm doing rather well even with principles.

As an tennis player and fan for many years, I rather think the opposite is true.

Mc Enroe's inability to control his temper cost him a spot among the truly great. Whatever advantage he got ( and certainly did it on purpose) psyching and disrupting opponents was more than balanced with the damage he did himself.

He was one of the more gifted players I've seen, and truly amazing when on, but his career, as a whole was not really consistent, and he won far less than he should have.

I agree with your post, but professional goalies do a lot more than that:

They study penalty shooters, their previous shots, their habits, how do they execute under pressure, etc.

Then, they look at the stance, the angle of approach to the ball, the position of BOTH feet, and at the last possible moment, they evaluate the information, choose a side and hope they guessed right.

NOTHING is simple at world class level.

The fact that MSFT changes file formats in Office all the time should work AGAINST them.

    Two things are needed:

    1) Competing applications agree in a COMMON format. MSFT is out alone in the cold.

    2) Your part: when you receive a Word (or Excel, or whatever) document, YOU SEND IT BACK. (OK, maybe not your boss' docs.)

In a very short time you'd see the power of standards.

In my experience, on the contrary, if you want to program you need a very thorough understanding of the problem.

In fact, one of the best ways to be sure you know some subjet well, is to try to program it.
The other is to teach it.

I understand what PicassoTRIED to say, but his exemple is a very bad one.
