Just press the activities key (Windows/Super/Meta) and move your mouse to the right. All of them are right there, and they auto-generate when you need more. If you need to move a window to another workspace, just click and drag. Double-click the workspace to zoom in or click the specific window you want. You can also scroll the workspaces using the mouse wheel on the workspaces list (very handy) or dragging the middle of the screen up or down (useful for touch screens). Don't forget that you can switch workspaces with Ctrl+Alt Up/Down as well!:)

How To Tweak GNOME 3

I wrote a blog post all about how to tweak GNOME 3's hidden settings to be more like how you want it to be. You can read it at my blog, here. To summarize, I explain how to go back to GNOME 2, install extensions, change themes, and much more. However, I do want to note that I don't even use my own tips; GNOME 3 so far has been nearly perfect for me and I see very little need to change the settings I mention, or even use any extensions. In fact, I wrote another blog post detailing the 10 things that I love about GNOME 3 in a sort of mini-review.
To summarize my latter post, I love how GNOME 3 "puts me in the driver's seat". There's no annoying, blinking lights, there's no "are you sure?" dialogs, the design is minimalist and takes up very little screen space, and it only gives me things like the window list, application list, and even notifications when I explicitly ask for them. If I don't want notifications I just mark myself as "busy" and check up on them at my leisure. If I want to switch a window I just tap the Windows key and click the one I want; fast and simple! Yes, that's "one more step", but it takes barely any more time than any persistent window list would take up (and less screen space, too). I love how easy and fast searching for applications and places in the Activities search bar is (you don't even need to click it; just start typing!), which gives it a GNOME Do vibe. Regardless of the search, I also love how easy it is to launch applications with the favorites list on the dashboard. GNOME 3 lets me add extensions as well just like any modern web browser so I can customize it or add features as I choose. No other desktop combines empowerment, distraction-free working, extensibility, and simplicity like GNOME 3 does and I have to say that it is the greatest desktop environment I've ever had the pleasure of working with so far. Even better, it looks like it will only get more awesome as time goes on!

Don't act like you represent all of/. with your elitist comments. I don't mean to sound rude, but there are some people here, like myself, that very much like GNOME 3 and see how it actually improves my workflow. "The majority of users", contrary to your statistic that isn't exactly grounded in reality, don't care about bells and whistles as long as their desktop gets things done. After them are advanced users, the kind that learn keyboard shortcuts and maybe commands for the command line/terminal. And after them are developers who know the software and systems well enough to code for them. Both of the latter two categories are highly eclipsed by the former, and it shows. GNOME 3 fills their cup of tea perfectly by staying out of their way, and it also fulfills my "power user" needs by giving me useful keyboard shortcuts. Try it for a week with an open mind, install some extensions, talk with the developers, file bug reports, etc. They need all of the help and influence they can get to make GNOME 3.2 even better than 3.0, so complaining about it on/. won't do much;)
A. I hate tools bars! If they are really necessary, PLEASE allow me to hide it/them.
The panel at the top of GNOME 3 is very, very small. If you're bothered by that, you might have a problem. I don't see a reason why it should need to be hidden.
B. I had to use gconf-edit to set focus on mouse instead of click to focus. Ridiculous!
Ask about it on #gnome-shell IRC or the mailing list; figure out their reasons for not implementing it and see if they might be able to implement it in a later release:)
C. Adding an extra click to launch an application is NOT intuitive. Its like START/REALLY START?
What exactly do you mean? As in, clicking the activities overlay? You know that there's many different ways to launch applications, yes? Just tap the Windows/Super key and move your mouse over to your favorites list on the left. Just as fast as an auto-hiding dock to me, if not faster. Also, you can search for an application by opening the overlay (again, use the Super key, it's much faster) and just typing. Full keyboard navigation in the search and everything; just like GNOME Do.
D. Automatically compressing desktop spaces when the last application in that space closes is very frustrating. Start 20 or so apps in various desktops and get everything just how you like them. Then add an extension to Firefox and you need to restart it. And watch your carefully laid out desktops contract.:( Now you get to start Firefox in the bottom desktop instead of desktop two, where it belongs! What are you supposed to do, start all 20 apps again and get them all the way you want, every time you need to restart Firefox or Thunderbird? REALLY?
I believe there's an extension designed specifically for this kind of behavior. It's available in the GNOME Shell Extensions repository (auto-move-windows).
E. It is obvious and understandable that GNOME 3 is getting a lot of development right now. But it is VERY frustrating to users when significant changes are made to the GNOME configuration data bases and config files. You may carefully set up back ground and theme choices to have your entire desktop fail to load because of an incompatibility with an updated GNOME preference. Lets please settle on configuration choices before final release, pretty please?
Change is expected; this is like upgrading from Windows XP to Vista. Some things are bound to break or get changed. If you find a bug, report it:)
A. All users may really not want the exact same things showing on the top tool bar. On a smart phone we have limited space, but even there users have choices. On GNOME # desktops everyone has a long, boring, and almost empty tool bar. (and it won't hise! Oh wait, I already said that) Why?
It's designed to reduce distractions and be minimal (so it'll fit well on a netbook as well as a Desktop, etc.). Most other things you'd need are in the "message tray" in the bottom-right, which only shows up when you ask for it by moving your mouse to the corner.
B. You cannot, and MUST not assume that all users will read a howto web site, or take a class on Gnome 3 before trying to shut down their personal system. That is the only way to learn how to do it properly. (Hold the ATL key down while in your personal menu to see Logout change to Shutdown, and press Shutdown to see Reboot...) Sad... Other things like running and app from the desktop/window manager, need training before it can even be guessed at. (ALT F2) Just a bit arbitrary, don't you think? It never really caught on among non-technical people.
I hope that wasn't a rhetorical question.
And that's the problem... RSS/Atom and just feeds in general are a million times more useful than adding a 140-character-limited feed on Twitter where it's mixed in with everything else (in this respect Facebook isn't as bad due to having less character restrictions). Adding a feed is just as simple as subscribing to any other type of social presence, but it's so much more useful. You don't even need an account on a centralized website to subscribe to a feed. Why has the uptake been so slow? Browsers and email clients and feed readers and feed websites are all over the place, ready to be used, yet their use pales in comparison to the obviously inferior Facebook/Twitter.
The most annoying thing about Facebook isn't that everybody expects you to have one, but that everybody and businesses are expected to have one (as well as a Twitter). What ever happened to Good Ol' RSS/Atom? My feed reader is infinitely better than using Twitter or Facebook for news, so why should I only be given the options of Twitter and Facebook to follow a company or website? Every store you walk in to, every product that you buy almost, somewhere in there is that stupid little Facebook/Twitter logo with the text "Find us on Facebook/Twitter!" Never a feed. Never. To find a good feed I have to search for it specifically and it often takes a while to find (thankfully Netflix and most modern blogs have a feed option). It's backwards, it's illogical, it's annoying, and it's centralized! When every single business in the world (pretty much) and every single person that you meet expects you to have a Facebook or Twitter and be willing to share your personal information with them, it's impossible to find peace without complying. I use Wordpress and Identica/StatusNet exclusively for my blogging needs, and my Twitter/FB accounts are merely mirrors of both solely because the general population refuses to switch to a much more secure, more flexible, and more decentralized social network.
Just because it's similar doesn't mean that it's good. God isn't ambiguous, nor should He be. Why would God leave the scriptures into every man's personal interpretation? Why would He want His followers to be unsure of what is right or wrong? The Bible as a whole is confusing and can be misinterpreted in many, many ways. I'd trust the Church that organized the New Testament in the first place that directly descends from the original Church Fathers over some preacher below the bible belt that says that he is right and that the other thousands of Protestant denominations are wrong.
with the clergy excercising complete control over the minutest details of their faith and telling everyone else what to believe
And why shouldn't they? Faith is not software; you can't change it however you like and expect it to be okay. God doesn't mold himself to fit what you want Him to be. You fit yourself to what God is! Any Church that didn't tell me what to believe and why is no Church at all and I wouldn't trust them with my life.
Stop laughing and start looking for the tears. These people are ruining children's lives and we should be supporting them not laughing at their abusers from a high horse.
I'm a Catholic, and I've never heard of things like D&D or Harry Potter being "prohibited". You're mashing the Catholic Church together with fundamentalist Christians (you know, the "KJV only", "Creationism" kind). I've actually read quotes before (though I cannot link to them for not knowing where they are on the internet) from people in the Catholic Church (not laymen) who approve of things like that so long as they teach good morals. I, as a practicing Catholic, haven't been decieved into "satanism" or "witchcraft" or any of that nonsense that fundamentalists spout all the time. The Catholic Church, if you don't mash them together with those fundamentalists, is actually quite reasonable (simultaneous orgasms, for example, are encouraged as well as sex after you're not able to have kids; can you believe that?).
Asking for three-dimensional, physical proof of what is spiritual is rather illogical, yes? The proof that God exists has nothing to do with science whatsoever. It has to do with the historical accuracy of the scriptures themselves, the history and tradition of Christianity (Catholicism in particular) and Judaism, as well as various miracles which allegedly occurred. Of course you can't see these right in front of your face, but that's what faith is for. If you look beyond the simple "can you prove that He exists" argument, you'll find a lot of things that "prove" that He exists, but not quite in the way you're expecting. St. Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic philosopher, wrote the Summa Theologica, an unfinished work that (in part of it) attempts to prove that God exists using human logic alone, a rather incredible feat if you ask me.
...who cover up the crimes of baby-raping priests in order to protect their own interests.
Exactly what interests would those be? The Church doesn't "cover up the crimes", it openly opposes them. Some members of the Church have covered up some crimes, but that doesn't make the entire Church as a whole bad.
Not that I believe any of this God/Satan claptrap, but if you're gonna accuse others of Satanism, it's incumbent upon you to have a long, hard, honest look at yourself before doing so.
Last I checked, Satanism is the name of a variety of actual religions that are practiced in parts of the world (however small their membership may be relative to more popular religions). Mere sin itself is not "satanism". The Church HAS apologized for the sin of it's members. Some priests might have committed crimes, but can you explain to me how that makes the entire Church itself a criminal institution? What sense would it make for them to randomly abuse children? What in the world would they gain?
BTW, the Catholic church isn't primarily a religious institution, any more than the Mafia is primarily a waste disposal business. It's a huge financial and political entity - soul-saving and Satan-stomping are just tools to help maintain and consolidate the power base.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Your claims that the Church is "powerful" and "rich" are purely popular myths that are quickly debunked with a simple Google search. Likewise, the "millions" of Inquisition victims are also highly innacurate. Spouting that crap just makes you look like an idiot that only hates on the Church to seem cool and karma whore. You're going to need to troll a lot harder than that.
No it doesn't. The existence of a scandal does not mean that the church itself promotes it. In fact, it does not approve of sexual abuse whatsoever and theyr'e trying to get rid of it. How an idiotic, immature, and trollish comment such as this gets a "+5 insightful" rating only shows how immature you all are.
Yet another article that blows what the Church says WAY out of proportion. It's like the only purpose of these articles it to laugh at them. It's true that there's an increased demand for exorcists and that the Internet is the cause, is it not? Why is this Slashdot worthy? It's not. It only is because some immature brats on here that hate on the Church love to laugh at it and take their statements way out of proportion. I feel sorry for all of you, really.
The price is way higher than any previous handheld from them
Without inflation taken into account. Even still, I'd expect a handheld with graphics supposedly better than the Wii, a gyroscope, two cameras (one of which is two lenses used for a 3D effect), 3D support, a touchscreen, and all of the software included with the handheld itself (there are tons of easter eggs if you look for them) to be at least the price of a Wii. The price will go down with time, of course. I think that, at launch, something as versatile as a 3DS deserves that price point (which also sets it apart from cheaper alternatives like the DSi).
the battery life lower
Yes, I mentioned that as well. It's not incredibly low, or even bad, but it's still lower. I've found that, unless you're ultra-hardcore and play games every second of your life, charging it every night or so works out fine.
several features like a single analog stick and resistive touch are outdated
Maybe so, but they're cheap to implement. The lack of a second analog stick is easily fixed by using the touch screen (which I've found is actually better than an analog stick for things like FPSs), and using your fingers on the screen would produce fingerprints and be less accurate than a stylus. For something like the iPhone, where it's a general entertainment device, I can see why it has a multi-touch screen, but the (3)DS is designed with gaming as the most important activity, and utmost precision with something like a stylus is necessary for that. Also, I highly doubt that a multi-touch screen would be even necessary since there's buttons on both sides of the system.
Power wise, the resolution is quite low, and the hardware is outclassed by pretty much all their competition.
Same for the Wii, but it's sold rather well and has several innovative titles. Merely being powerful doesn't make a system good or bad. This argument also contradicts your first sentence: "the device really doesn't seem like the device Nintendo would have normally shipped". The DS, GBA, Wii, and pretty much every one of Nintendo's handheld consoles were under-powered and technologically lacking by design, as is the 3DS (but not to the same level as the others were). Nintendo beat the competition every time though because it's systems were cheapest to own, develop for (IIRC), easiest to use, and were the most innovative, regardless of the so-called "disadvantages".
Inb4 all of the commenters from the previous Samsung article come in here and act like they didn't assume that the keylogger was real, didn't yell about how Samsung should/will be persecuted for this, and didn't ask for people to boytt Samsung;)...
I always hear Slashdotters complaining about "moral panic" and complaining about the "idiots" who don't do their research before making claims... How is this any different? Really, it's no different. Is the level of "corporate hate" on Slashdot really that high as to exclude any common sense (apparently not so common) when dealing with a subject like this where it's impossible to tell whether he was right? He said he was right in the previous article, but why did you blindly trust him? All it takes for a simple, non-assuming comment is to add "If this is true," to the beginning of your comments. It isn't very hard and it doesn't make you look like an idiot when the entire reason you said those things turned out to be bullcrap.
I've actually used the 3DS for multiple days in a row now and all of these problems haven't occurred to me. As long as you install the online firmware upgrade (which might later be included out-of-the-box) you don't get those errors, and many of the build quality errors with 3DSs are, as always, just vocal minorities. Is it really that hard, even for people that don't have Wi-Fi at their home, to download a simple firmware upgrade? There's libraries, restaurants and such all over the place with Wi-Fi that you could use. Nintendo didn't include this update with launch 3DSs because they figured out the flaw after they began manufacturing; would you have preferred that they didn't offer an update that fixed the problem?
As far as battery life goes, who in the world needs to play a game for more than 3-5 hours at a time, especially on a portable device? The 3DS even encourages you to not play for too long by acting as a pedometer, with which you can spend coins you get every 100 steps on unlockable items in the games you buy. Yes, it's not the super-long battery life we're used to, but it's more than enough.
I swear, what is it with all of the 3DS hate in the media? It's like they're trying to cause controversy over the 3DS for little reason besides ad views. The 3DS is a wonderful gaming machine and I've found absolutely no problems with it (though the d-pad squeaks a bit if you use it for something heavy like Street Fighter).
And don't try to impose it on others who don't share your beliefs, because you have no right to do that whatsoever.
Then explain the pressure by LGBT activists to make people approve of homosexuality then. Is that not bigoted? I believe we have a right to hold and express our opinions, whether or not that makes someone upset.
Church doctrine can, and does, change (look at the, admittedly tiny, concession the Pope made on condoms recently)
Google's your friend. What he said was extremely misunderstood by the media, and it changes absolutely nothing about church doctrine. Saying such shows your ignorance about how doctrine is formed in the Catholic Church, as well as your reluctance to look at more accurate sources than the biased general media.
Any religion or moral code that doesn't challenge me is absolutely pointless. The entire point of morality is that there are some things that you naturally don't want to do, but should anyways. There's no use in a religion that just caters to what the masses want because of convenience.
Oh, and have you heard of the Shift key? Apparently not...
Is it also sinful for postmenopausal women or sterile people to have sex?
No it is not, actually. The difference is that the heterosexual couples who are postmenopausal/sterile would not deny the life-giving aspect of sexuality otherwise (if not, then yes it's sinful).
Or people who realize that human overpopulation is the root cause of almost every catastrophe facing the biosphere?
Natural Family Planning, also known as abstaining from sex when you're most fertile (or not having it at all). You are almost never required to have sex unless you're being raped or things like that, am I right? Why do you make it sound like sex is something we have to have? It's beautiful, yes, but not required at all.

Inb4 all of the commenters from the previous Samsung article come in here and act like they didn't assume that the keylogger was real, didn't yell about how Samsung should/will be persecuted for this, and didn't ask for people to boytt Samsung ;)...
They only reported it because another website reported it falsely. Don't blame them for another website's mistake.
