I too cannot say enough good things about the PP2. I've had mine since 2004 and still haven't run into anything it can't handle. Bought it for (E)EPROM, and then got into PICs with it.
Also, I can say truthfully that comcast's billing system is HAPPY to run on a VT100 terminal... They just make a snazzy front-end to it for the "normal" reps to use. Only supervisors and above can go in and "manually" change things.
Yup. The big beef is that the manufacturer serial number is a rendom length value too. Plus the billing system was only designed to accept either moto or SA valid serial numbers. So it has to be re-educated to take a device ID(cablecard) and a host ID (the random number of digits and type of characters manufacturer's serial number) for billing instead of just a fixed length serial number.
Using the account number is a bad idea. Especially when some boxes are provisioned to NOT get HD or HD on demand, or porn, etc. Each box is linked to a "socket" on the account. A socket can contain any addressable item. Like a DOCSIS modem, a STB, or an eMTA device. Fuck, even an addressable tap in some places (no truck rolls to change analog service status/level).
OCAP (now Known as "Tru-2-Way") is finally in silicon now. Its just a royal PITA for the cable cos to rework their systems to handle 2-way capable non company owned devices. Billing for example. Comcast's archaic system would go NUTS if it saw a cablecard serial number purchasing OnDemand stuff. Also, they now have to debug their interface software on a zillion devices. Which will probably bite the consumer in the ass with something like "VoD is only supported on these 3 tru-2-way devices, all other devices will not be able to perform 2-way signaling until we can develop a software solution."
Alphagrip... http://www.alphagrip.com/ It's nifty. I had my pre-order in 26 months before they shipped. Well worth my $100 IMHO. I have a 19" viewsonic hung with a mig-torch modified 3-joint articulated bracket over my bed, and I can now look up and type with my hands resting down by the boys...
Yes, you do have to re-learn how to type. No, it doesn't take that long. It's very funny to watch your friends try to use it. It's 100% *NIX compatible!
"A heating unit has a "Coefficent of Performance" (aka COP), which describes the ratio of heat output to the energy input. A resistive heater (say, your toaster) has a COP of exactly 1. Every bit of power going into it comes out of it as heat."
Ok, here goes my mod-points for the next 3 years but I'll be pedantic...
Some of it comes out as light (which will eventually hit something and turn into heat, the Nichrome wires produce some form of magnetic field(or EM field, depending on which side of the physics butter-battle you reside on) and SOUND, physical vibrations... Listen to a toaster sometime... Granted friction with air will turn this into heat, but my pointless point (Hey, it's monday!) is that NOT ALL of the energy *LEAVES* as heat.:) All energy eventually becomes heat, yes, but a toaster isn't 100% heating efficient.:)/me wavies byebyes to mod-points, but it had to be said...
What does ozone have to do with this though? These work on electrostatic charge, and as a byproduct make negative ions and some ozone... they use static electricity to pull the dust out though.
It's more of a YMMV thing. once it pulls th ebulk out of the ai rit can clean as much air as you can get in and out of it. If you have really dirty air they'll clean less than if your air is nice and fresh. sort of like an oil filter. If the oil is dirty, the filter isn't goign to last as long as if the oil were clean to begin with.
Yeah, they have put out some good stuff. (Heck, we actually got the FCC to approve the FRS radios) But as of late they have thought up some really *DUMB* stuff. Gold plated fiber optic cables for example... The pay is ok if you can manage to sell a minimum of two cell phones and one satelite system per day, otherwise its just another minimum wage job.:-/
Not only that, but the Environizer's cleaning rod can be removed and jsut rinsed off... IIRC the ionic breeze thing needs to be wiped with a rag/paper-towel etc. Just make sure to read the instructions, there's a step int here to clean the wires so it doesn't buzz. You have to flip it upside down several times to slide a cleaning thing up and down the wires...
Valid point, but you can actually purchase VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) (sealed of course) batteries, on the cheap, which are the same damn thing that go into the APC UPSes.
Check out www.batteryworkspa.com for some more info, they seem to be on top of things, and have good pricing, and I know for a fact they have these type of batteries, because thats where I get mine for my UPS-en when I need new ones.
If you will note, distributed.net in and of itself as a whole, did *NOT* submit the story to slashdot. It was submitted by a third party who is in no way whatsoever related to distributed.net.
Dude, you got it all wrong. Call me racist, call me a bigot, whatever you like but the African continent is not "superior" technology-wise... *They never had land lines to begin with!!!!* Why would the phone companies waste money installing land lines when they can put cell towers in and use cell technology, which *is* superior to land lines.
*tubes*? Hey if your computer has tubes in it like mine does (Tube surround sound amp) you deserve a pat on the back.... Otherwise the only tub eyou have in your computer is the crt in your monior which only heats up when the power switch is on... everything else is shut off when the power switch is turned off.... Now in standby mode then yes the tube is kept *floating*... Not quite heated all the way up but is less stressfull than a cold cathode startup.
Heck yeah! It is even better if you put like 6 or 7 on top of each other and nuke em! My findings say that the dark blue ones don't make as many coasters from write errors and neither do they make pretty coasters when they come out of the nuke-o-matic.

Bleh. I need to get *OUT* of the cable industry.

And FFS let the scientists prove them wrong...
These fine people from "ke-bek"
Uhmm, you forgot to patch it... a simple con con does it in... usually wiht a blue screen but technicolor telnet isn't here for that. :)
Here, add one of these to your cart. :)
:) Hope this helps.
Yeah, its overkill for a device usign less than 10 watts, but hey, you could plug 3 or 4 environizers into one.
Ok, time for bed for me now, have to open my RadioShack in 5 hours...

Clickable link here, sorry. :)

Suprisingly, for a radioshack product, they really work, and are a lot cheaper and easier to clean than "The sharper image's" ionic breeze thing...
The $199 one should do a medium sized computer room.
My opinion may be nullified by the fact that I work for RS, but I speak now of my own free will.

See Nicaragua for reference.
Its only a matter of time before someone builds a bong out of an iCarumba. Its probably been done already. :)
Glad I already have enough for 5 or 6 clocks already cause they just got harder to locate now that /. geeks with electrical skills have been notified.
:)
*sigh*
hmm, all the #distributed people can check in here then... cheers switched :)
Wouldn't it almost be cheaper to fly there and deliver it yourself and spend some time visitin? ;)
