This 'solution' is akin to "A new way to beat your wife, but leave less bruises!".
It is 2009. We already have better ways to 'settle the fight (for energy)' without resorting to cleaning up archaic energy production methods.
Biodiesel, Clean Coal, Clean Natty Gas...... Etc etc... THESE ARE ALL STUPID DISTRACTIONS. We have had answers in front of us for at least one, if not two decades. These distractions are simply only a 'better proposal' to keep the current energy big-wigs holding the reigns and leaving a big mess wherever their product is used.
Aha! But that Socialist environment has been well aware that they are permitting an American capitalist product! It's a shame the europeans don't have the capacity to produce processors on their own and require the lowly presence of some capitalist american business to satisfy their people's needs.
I do agree with 'having to do so by their laws'. But I hardly agree that 1.3BN is representative of anything BUT extortion. A public reprimand or threat of ban would probably be much more sufficient --- but that doesn't score 1.3BN cash to the bank and banning would definitely work against the actual desires of the people in the EU.
Isn't that Lieutenant also a policeman? Who do you think I am pointing at here, Officer Joe Schmoe or the whole organization?
Let me give you a hint: THE WHOLE ORGANIZATION, duh. Why would I blame a minion for his leader's decisions? I guess it was easy to argue with me when you make that stupid assumption.
I would say that operating at a loss, in order to win, is VERY Competitive. What is the point of competition if you're not trying to win? I want to win, don't you? Don't you like to win so hard that nobody will even step up to you?
In many competitions people take personal sacrifices against their health, wealth, or social interaction time, to achieve success. This is no different: Intel decided to take a loss because they want to win. THAT IS COMPETITION.
Maybe it's not the kind of competition that you're into, the kind where people only do 'good enough'. The kind of competition where nobody can win --- everyone is special --- 'referees' step in to make sure some loser gets to pretend he's a winner and some hard-working winner gets held back from his deserved outcome.
I saw a recent article about a kid getting pulled from little league because he pitched too fast and it struck all the kids out... What a shame... The kid is a gifted and amazing pitcher, but instead of letting him prevail and win, the league decided to level the playing field by kicking him out. Now, which action stifled progress: the one where a kid worked so hard he was amazing, or the one where the league banned him for being so amazing?
The EU doesn't have the authority to break up a US-based company. Fines are one of their few options to extort huge sums of money from a US company.
I had to fix what you wrote there... 1.3BN is not a fine, its extortion. AMD had the same opportunity to sell below cost, but failed to appeal to vendors as well as Intel did. Boo effin' hoo.
If I work out harder and end up running faster than you in a marathon, am I at fault for making more sacrifices to achieve the success I desire?
It is a shame that Intel doesn't have any real competition, but extorting 1.3BN will hardly change that unless the EU decides to reinvest that 1.3 BN into a NEW chip company that can actually compete... I doubt that, since they quite obviously are just going to jack some cash from a US company and leave it at that.
You say 'threaten' where the word 'persuaded' is more applicable. It doesn't say Intel was threatening people, it said that they were selling below cost and that THAT action seemingly got retailers to buy.
Don't other companies sell products below cost to expand their market share?
Please refrain from misrepresenting what is happening with subjective/opinionated misleading words.
I'm not just blaming the police officers, I'm blaming the whole police system all the way to the top of the chain (as you put it).
And FYI, the police are much more highly paid than the military, receive the same great bennies + pensions after 20 years, and also swear to serve and protect just like you and I did. Maybe if we doubled their pay and halved the number employed (thus keeping the same budget) we could expect a lot more from them. Maybe I just expect more of people because doing a good job is how I was raised: I've noticed in the last 2 decades that the overall ability of people to care or do a good job has dropped significantly, police included.
As it stands, we get a lot of crap and very little cream out of this currently established system.
Gotta appreciate the lazy cowardly policemen that chose to raid a music pirate instead of dealing with serious violent/criminal offenders.
I love (no I don't) how the police will spend hours, if not days, of their man-hours dealing with petty nothings while the most blatant criminal elements are perpetually neglected.... I suppose this comes from giving the police the option which crimes deal with. In that case of course they will avoid dangerous battles and cowardly resort to minor traffic infractions and (as made evident) music pirates.
NWA said it best.
My proposal? Double the pay and bennies for the police, half the number on the force, and then expect a LOT more out of them and focus them on worthwhile crime. Then implement a very small, separate force to deal with traffic infringement and all the other petty crap.
When I served in the military, if there was more work to be done, you don't go home. That is part of service. I fail to understand how the police go home after a shift of handing out speeding tickets when there is quite obviously a *lot* more to be done --- that is not what they have sworn to do when joining the force, nor is it what we should permit them to maintain.
I would rather have very little or no police than to have a force that operates under convenience and laziness.
wow. very helpful man! Next time I get shorted or my check doesn't make it to my credit card company, I'm totally gonna use this! I had no idea there was a way to say something about it!
Since deliberate tampering of mail is a felony, what would blatant negligence equate to?
The USPS is notorious for losing your mail. It's not just Gamefly. I would guess that approximately 2% of my own mail also never makes it to me or its destination.
Here's my second question.. WHERE THE HELL IS IT?!?!?! Does it not at least get found on the floor somewhere and then get looked at? I mean... 2%... dude... THATS A LOT OF MAIL! WHERE THE HELL IS IT!?!?!?!

What kind of distraction are you attempting here? I'm talking about the amazing effectiveness of our military and the unnecessary waste of 300BN (yes, 1000 per man, woman, and child) when our military is of amazing destructive capacity already.
100k is the lowest estimate of US Forces killings of Iraqis. You should take an effort to research the actual values before you take a shot at my extremely conservative numbers with your ignorant postulations. Many estimates exceed 300k.
Get defensive much? Lol. Suck a Republican dick you lapdog fool.
300BN could put a generation through college. We spend 300BN because the majority of our population (like you) is far too ignorant to understand what is actually going on, what is at stake, and what priorities might better suit our countrymen.
I don't agree with how the RIAA operate, nor many of the ways they do their work. But the RIAA doesn't just make a judgement; they are required to go through the same legal processes that any other legal representative of a victim must go through. Furthermore, conviction requires the RIAA to compel the court with sufficient evidence.
Fortunately their shady methods have been brought to light so they will definitely need much more solid evidence before a court.
Also take note that this must happen to someone 3 times before they get banned. You tell me how many times Michael Jackson needs to sleep with a boy and be accused before we can safely assume he's actually doing something illicit -- and I'll tell you that if you've faced the RIAA in court and been convicted 3 times, you need to quit pirating shit.
I guess we'll see if you actually get ignored or not based on the outcome.
Its a shame that you've so recklessly implied laws do not have meaningful outcomes. I'm sure the child pornographers and spammers that have already been busted, to-date, would disagree with your blatant misrepresentation of reality. If you felt that laws do not actually serve such purpose, what are you so upset about? Aren't you, according to your implication, immune to recourse for your actions?
Unfortunately for your silly idea about cancer, there is no cognitive choice for a cell to become cancerous. Criminals do have a choice.
And back to my other point. When it turns out you've still be ignored on the bigger scale, you won't throw a stone, you'll sit down and enjoy the fact that you're not born in Zimbabwe worrying about food, water, shelter and disease.
Pigs and pig breeding were not invented nor created by Monsanto. How is this not immediately rejected by our patent system.
Furthermore, since when are natural, non-invented, life forms patentable? And even if an organism is modified, it is only the modification that was contributed, not the whole organism. To allow patent to whole organisms based on simple discovery or modification is akin to allowing a patent on Iron because you've found a way to make something with it.
This is nonsense. I think our politicians need an education beyond law school (aka learning how to manipulate and exploit).
And when you get ignored, then what? You'll go back under the bed and write pissy poems and get all worked up telling your girlfriend about how upset you are... lol.
All this discussion, beside the fact that banning criminals != threatening net neutrality. It means criminals get banned. I sure hope child porn and spammers get banned from access. I hope malware producers and black-hat hackers bet banned.
