Kids who received Playstations who had parents that let them play on the console every day did worse in testing.
I have two boys (7 and 9) and have a house full of gaming systems (including a MAME system for education in classic gaming). Our simple rule is no video games (or tv) on school nights. They do try to max out their play time on weekends but we end up with tons of time for homework, board games and other family activities the other 5 days of the week. The one tv exception is Nova and they beg to watch it all the time!
Tried that and it immediately went to the south pole and stopped. I guess I could reset the clock on my computer to 2008/7 but that would cause other problems.
I know this may be hard, but try, just for a moment, to imagine that you are a Jewish parent who is trying to raise your children properly, and everywhere they go, from every direction, they are getting fed full of this bullshit. Still fun? Right.
Oh, it must be way different than being an atheist parent and trying to raise your children properly and everywhere they go, from every direction, they are getting fed full of religious bullshit.
Guess what. It's still fun for me!
Hmm.
OP here.
Actually, I am a pretty damn hard core atheist. And being so, I know that Jesus had a snow balls chance in hell of being born on Dec 25th (or any other date really). I could care less about the christ part of christmas. In fact, if the uptight atheists would review their history and realize that christmas gained immediate popularity by taking over already popular pagan festivals they could relax and enjoy our atheist takeover of the christian's holiday.
That said, it is damn fun being a parent and following santa and all that. Blowing it off because you are an atheist is missing the whole point. Take it over and embrace it BECAUSE you are an atheist.
Or just celebrate saturnalia and figure out how to wedge Santa in there.
Those Lego Mindstorms NXT's are totally awesome! I spent some time googling them and am blown away at what can be done with them.
I think that my kids might be ready for them but will probably take the approach of getting them for myself and "letting" them play with it. If their interest grows then we can expand it.
Although we already have them, two of the coolest astronomy books for kids are by H.A. Rey. (Wrote Curious George with his wife Margret). The Stars and Find the Constellations.
Agree about the quality telescope. In fact we already have a 10" Orion Dob that we love.
The point about quality is what really made me think about posting to/. A family member recently purchased a p.o.s. microscope which the oldest was super excited about but was used for exactly 1 hour before being put on the shelf never to be used again. I couldn't see s**t though it myself.
But the Nokia N900 was NOT the FIRST. The Nokia N770 was the first 2005 - 2006 time frame. Next was the N800 than the N810. So the N900 is the FOURTH open source phone available to the market. Let's hope Nokia markets this one better than past ones. The market is theirs to lose!
WTF?!? The N770, N800 and N810 are not phones. They have no phone capability (beyond voip over a net connection). My N800 is great but is not and never has been a phone. The N900 is the first in the N??? line to actually be a phone.
Oh no, we are going to be discouraged from getting the vaccine that it looks like there is no hope of many of us getting anyway?!?!
It took weeks for me to finally get my kids vaccinated and so far, in SLC,Ut anyway, there is no sign that I will be getting the vaccine for weeks or more anyway. It's going to be tough getting my kids their booster also.
This has really been a disaster in distribution.
Thank goodness this strain isn't as deadly as the 1918 one. Hopefully the CDC is learning something from this.
I use a variation of the plain text file. I use a file but instead of listing the actual passwords I write memory hints to remind me what the passwords are and not the actual passwords. This does have the flaw that I am using many variations of a few passwords for most of my needs. The hints help me remember what variation of the password is for that site. If someone else got that file they wouldn't be able to make much use of it.
I also use simple throw away passwords combined with mailinator.com for websites/forums that I don't really care about security wise. If I forget the password I have it resent to mailinator.
can I get a summary of the review. Too long to read.
Mod parent funny. Perfect setup and spike.
Yeah, we should make sure it is deregulated. It worked out great for us re the financial sector and oil industries!
Or to summarize the study a different way...

I've never seen someone use "correlation isn't causation" who understood what that means.
Well, here is a quick lesson for them.
FYI, we do know what it means.
Wow. Thanks for all the great tips /.
I now have lots of neat stuff bookmarked for years to come.
Thanks again!
I had forgotten how much fun I used to have with my radio shack kit. Making the crystal radio blew my mind.
Those snap circuits look to have all the fun with less of the broken/lost parts.
Thanks to everyone who suggested them!

Yea, I left off the e in deGrasse in my initial submission. Whoops. Hopefully he will forgive.
The reason the kids knew him was from watching Nova Science Now religiously. A great program that needs more episodes a year!

Ha. Nope they are mine (or at least I am told so). We tried natural parenting and then...
