I use Linux for my primary home OS, and have done for 9 years. In that time I have found that Linux will do 90%+ of the things I can do in Windows. Likewise I have been in situatons where I am forced to use Windows, again 90%+ of the things I do in Linux I can do in windows. So which OS I use forms very little diffrence to what I'm trying to achieve. In the last year I have finally bitten the bullet and returned to having a Windows machine (Windows 7 dual booting with openSuSE 12.3, on my laptop). My desktop still runs Linux exclusively.
Reasons for needing/liking Windows

Come up with a few ideas yourself for projects, then in the first few meatings get suggestions from members, do whatever you can to keep then involved and take ownership of the project. The decsion of which projects to follow needs to decided by the group. Don't run to many projects in parralel (not a problem if you only have 4 people) but have everyone working towards a common goal.
Don't be autocratic, members are putting time into it they don't want someone pushing them around, do be prepared to take on the role of arbiter in disagreements.
Don't assume everyone is at the same level, some people will have experiance, others will want to learn. Come up with an itroduction corse that is not mandatory, even if the course is just go away and read this documentaion/work though theese examples at home. Be prepaired to help. Agree on a group language, make it appropriate for the type of project you want to do, for application stuff I would recomend python.

You can have a diffrent view of warm than I do. I would consider warm to be anything above the correct tempreture range for the Beer, and type does matter. I have had limited but good experiance with American (US) beer, (not the big mass market stuff). Diffrent beers need to be serverd at diffrent temps. Darker beers, bitters and ales genrally warmer but still at cellar temp (5'C-15'C) depending on the beer, lighter lagers and pilsners should be cooler (3.5'C - 10'C). There are probably exception I would have thought the super strong beers (e.g. TNP and STB) could benefit from being a little warmer, but still below room temp . Anything below 3'C may as well be fizzy water with an inebriating effect, if a beer can only be drunk like that its a bad beer.

Clearly you have not had experiance of trains in the UK, I have been in the Netherlands for almost a year now and my experiance Dutch trains although not super fast, they are puntual, and rarely suffer from extreme delays. I only have refrence of UK which is a known hell hole for trains (the last train I took in the the UK was >3hrs late and missing 2 carriages, so packed.)
The rest of your points all seem true, well as far as I know. I have only been here a year and am not fammiliar with NL/USA VISA arrangements.
It's running 3 VMs over a hypervisor. One is basically Windows 8 and does the apps and TV and movies and shit, the other is the Xbox OS which runs the games, and the third is a video compositor so you can seamlessly transition between them and have the little side pop-up things. It literally is running 3 OS instances at any given time.
OK, that does sound more impressive than the what the quote said, I did not really RTFA (this is/.), just kinda skimmed it. Although what is the advantage of this setup over a single OS with good task scheduling? Is the XBOX OS so radically diffrent to the rest of the system it need a totally independent OS? Is this a way to sandbox the game console from the media centre, possible to ensure MS lockdown of the console while still allowing the media centre to work more like a traditionol computer? It seems like an over engineered system that brings in overhead. Could some one fill me in on the benefit of this, I accept my understanding of OS design is somewhat lacking.
Any news on if it can play Xbox 360 games? The thing is if MS drops 360 Xbox Live support the 360 becomes an expensive boat anchor. Everything on the 360 revolves around Live including your profiles, Important game patches, Video content like renting movies and HBO GO, etc.
The new Xbox One will mean EOL of the 360, I am yet to see a new console release not have caused a lack of (new) software for old models withn 6 months. If they keep XBL silver running for 12 or 18 months thats more than enough time for critical games updates (Also why is it now acceptable to release games before they are ready). The lack of online gaming and services sucks, but it's kind of expected and if you bought your 360 for the live feature in the beleif that the service was going to run in perpetuity, then you are a fool.

I may well get one of these, I always liked my XBOXes (original and 360, never had one break). It really depends on whether the always on internet requirment is actually a requirment. I never connected my xbox to the net, and infreaquantly connected my 360. When I want to play games I like to be able to grab a beer and play by myself (I never really enjoyed online gaming) or even better get some mates round get more beer and play games on a big TV, oh and pizza don't forget pizza.

Ths is one of the few occasions when using the term GNU/Linux is actually helpfull. Normally when I refer to Linux I mean GNU/Linux. If I am talking about the kernal I will say the Linux kernal, when talking about Android I will say Android or DALVIK/Linux depending on context. This system seems pretty universal (RMS dislikes though).
ofcourse you can run GNU tools in a chroot, thats not "Installing Linux on Android", thats installing an new set of userland tools on an existing kernal.
I can think of lots of usage cases for a proper GNU/Linux distro on a low powered sub $200 Atom laptop, I would be tempted by one if I can easily install a poroper distro (either dual-booting or just replacing the Android install). If the process is made artificially difficult (e.g. by locking the bootloader) I am not going to support the company and buy crippled HW. Even if the process is only running a script.

You might think this is great since people will produce free software instead, but most people are motivated by money so what it really means is that people are more likely to work for a big company (which can overcome these entry costs) than start their own company.
This makes no sense. In a GPL only world there is no other licences, so everthing is compatible. You would have to publish under the GPL as well (if you did not, it would no longer be a GPL only world). The GPL may make monetizing you work difficult (not impossible, but may make less, and you will have to give contius support).
I know this was not the point you where making - you where thinking of of a world where the GPL is the only F/OSS liscence, as well as a load of commercial licenses. As I have already stated that I prefer the asymmetric design, this is almost certainly due to what I'm used to. I would not criticize if someone prefers an alternative. I would pull them up if they say my preference is wrong though.
I think this comes down to the fact that modern games have 2 different controls set ups. Either 1 analogue stick and the action buttons or 2 analogue sticks, so maybe we need 2 controllers for these two situations, one with the NGC/360 set up the other similar but with the the action buttons and the right stick switched. Either way I would go out of my way to avoid using a PS* style, after using a Dual shock for an hour or so my hand cramps maybe I'm holding it wrong?
The only consoles I can think of that have vertical aligned analogue sticks are Sony PlayStation* controllers. For this reason I have never felt completely comfortable with them. I guess it's what your used to but having gone Nintendo > MS on consoles, which probably explains it. My favorite controller ever was the original Gamecube one slightly small, but for games designed with it in mind second to non.
As far as controllers go I have never thought Sony really knew what they where doing the the shoulder buttons never seemed to be in the correct place and I prefer the asymmetric analogue stick layout - the later is training though.
That HP still exists in the form of Agilent. They still make fantastic measurement and lab gear. They have nothing to do with the computer side of HP anymore.
Thankyou for this infomation, I have never been in a position where I have had any say in equipment aquirment, and have never had the money to even think about buying the stuff. Saying that I will obviousley take a serous look at the Agilent equipment and if it is as solid, and as easy to use as the old HP stuff I used it will have to have a really good compeititor to stop me recomending them.
The other stuff that I have used has either been Tektronics stuff or custom made equipment. The Tektronics stuff never seemed bad, but always seemed a choir to use. The custom stuff worked perfectly when it worked, which was unfortunaley this was not as frequantly as I would have liked.
My experiance of HP stuff is you get what you pay for. Maybe there decent stuff is slightly overpriced but it's certainley not bad.
I have had a few friends and family members who have had nothing but pain with there HP laptops (all of them bought them because HP was a "known brand", all of them bought Pavillions and I hated (as the resident geek) every single one. On the other hand my experiance with using HP machines in the workplace has been nothing but good, the elite books seemed always just worked and where perfect for what we used them for. I have also had some experiance with HP lab equipment (scopes/spectrum analizers/signal analizers) and love it, all of these where old though (1980s) but they where all better than the new stuff we had.
I have recently got myself a probook - It's distinctley OK and I would have been dissapointed with it if I had payed full price but I got it with a university discount. I can not speak about support as part of the discount is that we have to deal with the university student computer service, who are really quite poor. I also had a problem with getting Debian to run on it (wifi, sound and webcam). I probably could have sorted it but took the recomended option of OpenSuse and everything is pretty nifty.
Never had to deal with there enterprise software so cannot comment.

I have had limited but good experiance with American (US) beer, (not the big mass market stuff). Diffrent beers need to be serverd at diffrent temps. Darker beers, bitters and ales genrally warmer but still at cellar temp (5'C-15'C) depending on the beer, lighter lagers and pilsners should be cooler (3.5'C - 10'C). There are probably exception I would have thought the super strong beers (e.g. TNP and STB) could benefit from being a little warmer, but still below room temp . Anything below 3'C may as well be fizzy water with an inebriating effect, if a beer can only be drunk like that its a bad beer.

Clearly you have not had experiance of trains in the UK, I have been in the Netherlands for almost a year now and my experiance Dutch trains although not super fast, they are puntual, and rarely suffer from extreme delays. I only have refrence of UK which is a known hell hole for trains (the last train I took in the the UK was >3hrs late and missing 2 carriages, so packed.)

It's running 3 VMs over a hypervisor. One is basically Windows 8 and does the apps and TV and movies and shit, the other is the Xbox OS which runs the games, and the third is a video compositor so you can seamlessly transition between them and have the little side pop-up things. It literally is running 3 OS instances at any given time.
OK, that does sound more impressive than the what the quote said, I did not really RTFA (this is /.), just kinda skimmed it. Although what is the advantage of this setup over a single OS with good task scheduling? Is the XBOX OS so radically diffrent to the rest of the system it need a totally independent OS? Is this a way to sandbox the game console from the media centre, possible to ensure MS lockdown of the console while still allowing the media centre to work more like a traditionol computer? It seems like an over engineered system that brings in overhead. Could some one fill me in on the benefit of this, I accept my understanding of OS design is somewhat lacking.
Any news on if it can play Xbox 360 games? The thing is if MS drops 360 Xbox Live support the 360 becomes an expensive boat anchor. Everything on the 360 revolves around Live including your profiles, Important game patches, Video content like renting movies and HBO GO, etc.
The new Xbox One will mean EOL of the 360, I am yet to see a new console release not have caused a lack of (new) software for old models withn 6 months. If they keep XBL silver running for 12 or 18 months thats more than enough time for critical games updates (Also why is it now acceptable to release games before they are ready). The lack of online gaming and services sucks, but it's kind of expected and if you bought your 360 for the live feature in the beleif that the service was going to run in perpetuity, then you are a fool.

WTF, this thing has a an x86 core and is running a modified version of MS Windows, how much effort did they put into multitasking. If they really did put this much effort into it isn't this a bit of wheel re-invention, or maybe they have a better scheduler than in desktop Windows. If the systems is better than standard Windows why is it not being pushed into there main OS.
I may well get one of these, I always liked my XBOXes (original and 360, never had one break). It really depends on whether the always on internet requirment is actually a requirment. I never connected my xbox to the net, and infreaquantly connected my 360. When I want to play games I like to be able to grab a beer and play by myself (I never really enjoyed online gaming) or even better get some mates round get more beer and play games on a big TV, oh and pizza don't forget pizza.

How? this makes no sense to me how can you install linux on android, android is Linux (well a modified Linux).
Ths is one of the few occasions when using the term GNU/Linux is actually helpfull. Normally when I refer to Linux I mean GNU/Linux. If I am talking about the kernal I will say the Linux kernal, when talking about Android I will say Android or DALVIK/Linux depending on context. This system seems pretty universal (RMS dislikes though).
ofcourse you can run GNU tools in a chroot, thats not "Installing Linux on Android", thats installing an new set of userland tools on an existing kernal.
I can think of lots of usage cases for a proper GNU/Linux distro on a low powered sub $200 Atom laptop, I would be tempted by one if I can easily install a poroper distro (either dual-booting or just replacing the Android install). If the process is made artificially difficult (e.g. by locking the bootloader) I am not going to support the company and buy crippled HW. Even if the process is only running a script.

In GPL only world, the entry costs to producing and selling software become a lot higher. I cannot use an GPL code, so I must replicate all that functionality. You might think this is great since people will produce free software instead, but most people are motivated by money so what it really means is that people are more likely to work for a big company (which can overcome these entry costs) than start their own company.
This makes no sense. In a GPL only world there is no other licences, so everthing is compatible. You would have to publish under the GPL as well (if you did not, it would no longer be a GPL only world). The GPL may make monetizing you work difficult (not impossible, but may make less, and you will have to give contius support).
I know this was not the point you where making - you where thinking of of a world where the GPL is the only F/OSS liscence, as well as a load of commercial licenses. Well why should someone profit from my work, I put my time and effort into it, I gave it to the community and now someone wants to add somthing (reletively simple), and sell it. if this was not the intention why should I allow it. There are good reasons for the GPL.
Maybe I'm missing something but why are you focusing specifically on that chip? Some of the chips (e.g. A20) definitely have an FPU unit. If you need an FPU (and who doesn't), get a card (or cards) with an appropriately specified CPU core.
True I frequaently run searches on how to do stuff in latex, and I do not care weather I'd google links that data to me or not. I'm not embaressed about how much help I need from the internet with my latex documents. So maybe my past searches have coloured my result

As I have already stated that I prefer the asymmetric design, this is almost certainly due to what I'm used to. I would not criticize if someone prefers an alternative. I would pull them up if they say my preference is wrong though.
I think this comes down to the fact that modern games have 2 different controls set ups. Either 1 analogue stick and the action buttons or 2 analogue sticks, so maybe we need 2 controllers for these two situations, one with the NGC/360 set up the other similar but with the the action buttons and the right stick switched. Either way I would go out of my way to avoid using a PS* style, after using a Dual shock for an hour or so my hand cramps maybe I'm holding it wrong?
The only consoles I can think of that have vertical aligned analogue sticks are Sony PlayStation* controllers. For this reason I have never felt completely comfortable with them. I guess it's what your used to but having gone Nintendo > MS on consoles, which probably explains it. My favorite controller ever was the original Gamecube one slightly small, but for games designed with it in mind second to non.
As far as controllers go I have never thought Sony really knew what they where doing the the shoulder buttons never seemed to be in the correct place and I prefer the asymmetric analogue stick layout - the later is training though.
That HP still exists in the form of Agilent. They still make fantastic measurement and lab gear. They have nothing to do with the computer side of HP anymore.
Thankyou for this infomation, I have never been in a position where I have had any say in equipment aquirment, and have never had the money to even think about buying the stuff. Saying that I will obviousley take a serous look at the Agilent equipment and if it is as solid, and as easy to use as the old HP stuff I used it will have to have a really good compeititor to stop me recomending them.
The other stuff that I have used has either been Tektronics stuff or custom made equipment. The Tektronics stuff never seemed bad, but always seemed a choir to use. The custom stuff worked perfectly when it worked, which was unfortunaley this was not as frequantly as I would have liked.
My experiance of HP stuff is you get what you pay for. Maybe there decent stuff is slightly overpriced but it's certainley not bad.
I have had a few friends and family members who have had nothing but pain with there HP laptops (all of them bought them because HP was a "known brand", all of them bought Pavillions and I hated (as the resident geek) every single one. On the other hand my experiance with using HP machines in the workplace has been nothing but good, the elite books seemed always just worked and where perfect for what we used them for. I have also had some experiance with HP lab equipment (scopes/spectrum analizers/signal analizers) and love it, all of these where old though (1980s) but they where all better than the new stuff we had.
I have recently got myself a probook - It's distinctley OK and I would have been dissapointed with it if I had payed full price but I got it with a university discount. I can not speak about support as part of the discount is that we have to deal with the university student computer service, who are really quite poor. I also had a problem with getting Debian to run on it (wifi, sound and webcam). I probably could have sorted it but took the recomended option of OpenSuse and everything is pretty nifty.
Never had to deal with there enterprise software so cannot comment.
