    Today I recieved a test...

    Not a fill-in-the-bubble kind of test but a "Are you going to charge down the hillside where that car just went off the road?" test. Yes. I charged down the hill. Yes I sank in the knee deep soaking wet snow. Yes I only had street shoes on. Yes, I was soaked. Yes it made me late for dinner.

    Most importantly, the driver of the car which was upside down in the gully was OK. Perhapps in shock but OK. The EMT's came, lots of lights....

    Helping a stranger is not something everyone gets to do. I did today. I got a great gift.

    Actually, a bait and switch involves advertizing Item A at price X (bait), then when customers come in looking for A @ X, you tell them sorry, your out of A (if you had any to begin with!), but you'd be happy to sell them Item B at Price Y.. (switch).

    Often Item A is better then item B and price Y is higher then price X.

    In this case, the removal of service from the service + Unit bundle was annouced by marketing / advertizing before the packaging ( boxes and so on ) and retailers ( CC, Bestbuy etc ) where informed of the change.

    While I agree that DNNA apear to have acted stupidly, are being irritating, and are alienating customers, it isn't nessisarilly a criminal action. Face it, people make mistakes and some are just more agravating then other mistakes.

    Alot of companies when making this change, will change the model numbers, packaging, advertizing and so on so that they can trasition to the hardware-only and subscription service or keep both (as TiVo does) and sell lifetime subscriptions as well as monthly service.

    P.S. I love my TiVo and could care less if replay shot itself in the foot like this repeatedly.

    Interesting - by mentioning the USL/BSD situation, they are claiming something along the lines of:

    "Files mentioned in the settlement should be retro-fitted with SCO(x) Copyright notices so we can claim the rights to them, if you don't, then we'll wack you with this DMCA s.1202 violation language."

    So they think this is some kind of squash court and it ignores that they've been published and released under the BSD licence as if BSD had no rights from the result of the settlement.

    Or am I completely wrong?

    When I ripped out my Romex (steel covered cable) it was quite nasty... however, we had the drywall all down and pulled the plaster & lath down too so it was quite easy to see where things were sticking. Alot of the cable was cut in many places and removed from around the staples.

    You will need to check with a local person as the codes vary all over the country.. not everyone enforces the NFPA rules or adopts them as local ordinances. Fire code in the US is a massive mess... thus we have the highest fire fatality rate in the civilized world...

    Backbone bulk cables - yes they make good stuff. Retail cables? Eh... not so hot. KVM's with included cables from them are (in my limited experience) worthless crud. The *belkin* cables were always falling out of the KVM unit - it was quickly replaced.

    Its too bad that people arn't still building giant datacenters the way they were in the dot-com boom. I'm sure this expantion into 'consumer' grade gear is an effort to keep the R&D for the backbone cable bussiness afloat. Its too bad they've screwed up so spectacularly in this instance.

    The FCC labels are about electromagnetic radiation and interfearence with other devices. The FCC probably has no ability or interest in trying to force compliance with IETF documents or even TCP/IP stack compliance.

    The FCC regulations are very easy to get approval for... just build a metal box, do anything you want inside of it and chances are, it'll pass. Now, if you put a spark-gap (jacobs ladder) on the front, it won't... but it'll look damn cool! :)

    My friend owned several KVM's at one point - one of them was a Belkin 4 port desk unit. He ALWAYS had cables falling out of it - it turns out the ports were so loose as to be useless.

    Even the *belkin* supplied cables fell out. Nothing like having your K/M cables fall out to crash the machine you are trying to work on. The KVM was quickly consigned to an awefull fate.

    I used to work CSR/Helpdesk. I know how to behave on the phone even when I have to jelly elephant [1] something.

    So, just for grins, I thought I'd call SCO. I asked what was going on and if they could explain how they were now stealing code while sueing others over the theft of thier code.

    I got hung up on. No suprise. But, maybe someone else will have better luck.

    This may not be in /. readers viewing area but. When I've gone searching to price-compare models of dishwashers, I have *never* found a match. Ever. It seems every major retailer (Sears/HomeDepot/Whatever) all have thier own 'set' of units from each producer.

    Nevermind what Consumer Reports has listed for models... a true nightmare in patern matching.

    Oh and every color is a different model too.

    Now, I find this all very strange, and I cannot see SCO winning this case, which makes me think that the whole thing is a pump and dump scheme, so watch out for the next stage, which will result in some fancy footwork by even more lawers in keeping SCO execs out of jail.

    While I agree that having this sort of onboard all-the-time enforcement is undesireable...

    This particular case involved a fatality. Perhapps we need the devices there and protected from being used execpt where there is a court order involved. Perhapps in cases where there is a fatality or other serious injury.

    It will be hard to implement these devices without a forum and discussion.

    The right to a speedy trail is applicable in criminal cases where a person is deprived of thier freedom - i.e. in jail. The speedyness of civil lawsuits just plain doesn't exist.

    The right prevents the law officers from imprisoning people and keeping them locked up indefinately while they delay the defendants trial.

    Our main client is a national bank that uses the WiFi technology to transmit transaction details securily from ATMs to the central datacentre. It has reduced TCO (total cost of ownership) by approx. 65%.

    Which translates not into lower ATM fees, but into PROFIT!! *cough*

    The term 'American' does indeed tend to refer to someone from the USA. That is true in many places...

    However, there are these larger areas in most (6/7) cases containing more then one country called continents and Canada is part of North America along with the USA and Mexico. Amazing, huh? It's too bad the RIAA picked such a nebulas term for its name- but perhaps they do have members in Canada and Mexico. I won't even mention South America.

    That sounds like a terrible idea. It'd put us right at the same level as SCO and another large software company who announces products soon after rival products are announced or come to market and then gives away thier wares untill the rival is a smoking ruin. Besides its a pretty day. I'm going to skip the lawsuit angle and go dancind. With women. Yep! Thats my plan!

    I worked at a Field Force Automation specialist - we supported users with laptops and printers. We would swap out 2-10 items a week - new machines, new printers because the sales people in NYC were really hard on thier machines.

    So, we replaced a printer - an HP320 portable inkjet. We got the old machine back and as we unpack it, there is a light brown dust falling from it. My Co-worker (and wife) passed the box to me and said "I don't want to know" ... well... It was finely ground bits of cockroaches! All the nice paper pinch rollers in the printer also kill roaches dead! So, we just tossed it into the dumpster including the shipping box. I think we marked it in inventory as "Scrapped for parts".

    I don't have the numbers handy, but Vermont also has 3 electorial votes, and a far smaller population then Montana. Thus the voting power of Vermont is greater then Montana. Nevermind the neighbors to the West - NY State.

    I wonder what would happen if the state-level representatives ( I.E. US House & Senate ) were able to cast thier electorial votes in a preferential election. For Grins. Maybe run a simulation. Ask them. Who knows.

    I would reply with "No way." Here's why:

    I have several friends who code or produce other computer output for thier income. Lets call them Mark and Jason.

    Mark is 32 - produces computer artwork and does computer imaging and interactive systems. He's 33 right now. Two years ago, this time I was helping him recover from Quadruple heart bypass sugery. Yes, at 31. Now, he may have been predisposed, genetics, etc etc. However, when you work *double* or almost double the hours that everyone else regularly does, you end up with a life style that puts your health at serious risk.

    This request to work alot more will undoubtedly increase your stress - another factor in heart disease. I cannot say how much the "go-go-go and everything is on your shoulders" lifestyle has hurt my friends.

    Jason is a systems manager, Email, web, DB, whatever - he's your guy. He is the proud father of twin boys, just a year old. Know where Jason is, this very very moment? ICU. No, not ICQ. ICU. He came through his *double* bypass surgery early yesterday evening.

    There is no amount of money or anything else that is worth your health and your familys son/daughter/wife/husband/father/mother.

    There has been talk of IT unions. Maybe its a good idea... Maybe we'd better think about this before its (almost) too late for more of us.

    We note you continue to be an A/C. This is good policy for someone who is attacking masses of /. readers for not knowing the details of a contract between HP and Dell. At the same time, it shows your ignorance of the readership by lumping all readers into your personally defined 'geeks who know nothing about bussiness' catagory.

    It'd be interesting to know the answers in your post; margins and so on. However, its not terribly important.

    Many of the people who specify equipment purchasing decisions will remember the emotional reaction that they had with vendor X the next time they purchase items which vendor X produces. Its normal for persons who have had a bad experience with a product to not buy it again. Unless, somehow, the difficulties produced lots of income for them in the end.

    YMMV, IMHO, etc ....
