  1. Talk to a Large Lawfirm IT department on How To Manage Hundreds of Thousands of Documents? · · Score: 1

Lawfirms are experts at managing millions of documents using document management software. If you want state-of-the-art document management. Then the software that lawfirms use is what you're looking for.

  2. The Underlying Scaryness is they'll Figure out how on Publishers Want a Slice of Used Game Market · · Score: 1

On the face of this, the game companies realize that the idea is crazy as is. But seriously, the un-voiced issue here is that if this is on their mind, they're going to figure out a way to make it happen. Rather than reply with other wacky examples of why this is a stupid Idea, I think people should be focused on what this story really means. It means that game companies are going to figure out a way to keep their hands on your game. PC publishers have already done this to the point where Gamestop can't resell PC games. Now the publishers are eying the console market. Within a year, I'd wager they'll have some system in place that makes reselling console games nearly impossible.

  3. I call BS on this. on Painting The World's Roofs White Could Slow Climate Change · · Score: 2, Insightful

Go look at google maps. Zoom in on a major city like San Francisco. The percentage of man-made dark surfaces are very tiny. I'd be stunned if it equaled a fraction of a percent world-wide. And personally I'd like to see some actual numbers on this before we start strip-mining for the titanium compound that makes white paint.

  4. Can Real Camera's be Silent? on New Law Will Require Camera Phones To "Click" · · Score: 1

If this applies to Phones, then what about actual cameras? Can they be silent? God, how come people that makes laws are so ignorant of the subject matter of those laws? And does this mean it's now unlawful to put a piece of tape over my phone speaker? Seriously....

  5. What does this really say? on Software-Generated Paper Accepted At IEEE Conference · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe the really pathetic thing about this story isn't the fake paper getting through, but rather the inane nature of the other real papers.

  6. AoC vs. Warhammer on Age of Conan Dev Talks Problems, Future Plans · · Score: 1

I played AoC for about 10 days before I canceled and realized it was really poorly done.

Warhammer in my opinion has redefined how to launch a MMO. It made me see how really bad AoC was and there's no way that I would ever waste my time revisiting AoC. Even another free month wouldn't be worth the time to reinstall it.

  7. No Idiot Left Behind on Students Are Always Half Right In Pittsburgh · · Score: 1

Seriously. How do you justify automatically awarding credit for work that isn't even done yet? Instead of Uneducated students falling through the cracks, we decide to include breathing as 50% of your grade so there are no more cracks.

  8. We're suppose to trust these guys? on Greek Hackers Target CERN's LHC · · Score: 1

We're suppose to trust that the LHC is perfectly safe ... but the same guys telling us this thought it was a good idea to make the controls accessible via the web? When the first black hole is created and becomes stable because it's not subject to the same gravitational and environmental instabilities as the SURFACE OF THE SUN... somehow "I told you so" isn't going to seem enough. Geeze... even in the cheesiest sci-fi novel, they make scientists perform these cool experiments outside the orbit of pluto.

  9. So, by Pure, they mean Microsoft used a condom? on Microsoft and OLPC Agree To Put XP On the XO Laptop · · Score: 1

Seriously, how did the OLPC not recognize this as a monopoly solidification ploy in the most obvious way? The real story here is where's the really money being funneled?

  10. Fundamental Flaw in Quantum[Anything] on Quantum Cryptography Broken, and Fixed · · Score: 1, Interesting

The whole thing strikes me as a theory in a vacuum, I don't believe that ANY quantum object is invulnerable to observation. At it's core, this is a theory on paper that has no real-world solution. It's like the perfect gas. It simply doesn't exist. And any "fix" will invariably need fixing again. When did common-sense stop making sense in science?

  11. Seriously flawed, but great stufy on Do Zebra Stripes Actually Help? · · Score: 2, Interesting
How exactly to they justify their results when they clearly admit this

It is also important to note that a few participants spontaneously reported that they used their finger, on or over the computer screen, to follow down columns and across rows. Other participants used their mouse to highlight rows of interest, in effect creating their own 'temporary zebra striping'.

When the participants violate the very precepts of the study by creating their own striping, the study become ridiculous. It's like doing a study if walking is slower than biking, and the walkers are allowed to bring their own bikes.

But the study itself is great, I just disagree with the conclusion, it seems to show that striping is SO useful that when denied striping, people create their own.
