XP is faster if you have "more resources". XP will of course die on.. like... 128MB RAM. But if you have more, XP can utilize it better. (It's the newer version of 2K kernel, as you said).
Even on the GUI side, XP can use hardware acceleration very well. I've seen this when I upgraded from S3 Trio to GeForge 2.:)
This is the way software is going, unfortunately. You cannot have the same "binary" optimized for both speed and size. Except for Linux, where you have the source and power to choose optimizations, of course.
Excuse me, but I do not understand people, when Microsoft wants their customers upgrade a version that they can *support*, everybody goes "hey, they cannot do that!".
Correct me if I am wrong, but does RedHat support 4.0? Does Apple support MacOs 9? No they don't.
The only serious issue here is the *price* and *new licensing scheme*.
Price is (was) not a big issue, because they had many options for upgraders at the late 2001.
User eXPerience may be a problem. But then you can costomize XP any way you want. (I currently have Aqua theme on my machine. And I can assure you it's way better than any other clone (kde, gnome, etc.) except for MacOS itself).
Licensing is a problem. I accept it. But not for everyone.
Stabiliy. My experience is XP is *much* more stable than any other windows. XP is what 2000 was meant to be. It's faster, more stable, and has a better interface.
Sorry, but anyone who used XP for more than a month will agree with me. Once being used to it, turning back is not so easy.
It's the fist time Microsoft did a "nice" OS, and of course they want everyone upgrade to it.
I am not sure about the law in other countries. But here in Turkey, it's your intention what counts.
I think it's similar in US too. Because you get different punishments for murder on purpose and by mistake.
Also it was not port, is was "post". 20 second lameness filter made me confused. I did not check the post before submitting for the second time. Forget it:)
Forget it. This is Slashdot. You can find articles with,
- Typing errors (25 hours per day)
- Incorrect information
- Seen "n" time stories everday. We also have "trolls", "flameblaits" here. Once we also had "first posters". But I think they are gone (at least after I set minimum rating to +2).
slackware no longer supports "any" floppy installation.
It used to support full floppy installation before (I guess) 7.0. After that you could only install bas and network series with floppies.
Now they have dropped all floppy support and merged a1, a2, a3.. into a. (a1 a2 were base system floppies).
Anyways go try it. I used pre8.1 images from slackware-current. It realy rocks. If you need floppy installation, you have to copy everything to a hard drive and boot setup from floppies (almost every distro does it this way).
Not to mention XP, there's that stupid CD burning software, dvd player, windows media player, internet explorer, and funky skins. If you take that away from XP... then you'll have Win2K:-).
I strongly disagree. I am running XP at home, and I am not using XP for the features you mention (except for one). I use XP because it's stable!
Well I am not a Microsoft advocate. I am a Slackware user and I even can't use Mandrake, RedHat, Debian, etc. But sometimes I have to use Windows (for something like playing games, editing Word files, or somehow cdrecord stops working). And I can assure you that XP is much faster and stable than any other windows version (except for 3.1).
(FYI: I am using Adaptec CD Creator (when cdrecord fails for my kernel version), WinAmp, PowerDVD, etc. But I keep that shiny skin:)
Sorry to say that, but I would prefer DOOM to *any* other FPS. I do not know why. Maybe because it's my first, maybe i'm still in love with the atmosphere. Or even maybe it's multiplayer (in E1M1) is just better.
Anyways, I happen to play Q3 or Duke Nuke'em from time to time. I am just strange.
It's not the cygwin that is slow it's the fork() call and IPC that're slow.
KDE does many "fork(); exec();"s on startup. I did try KDE on windows, it launched really "slow". Also any "make" takes too much time.
Another thing is: window managers accesses X via IPC. I tried cygwin applications (named XFCE) on exceed with native window management. It wast just "fast".
Well, DOS/Windows doesn't have (and never had) an open source culture.
You're wrong! Have you ever heard about SWAG? DOS did have an open source community which was even more freer than GNU community (all the source was public domain!). But it was in PASCAL. So you probably meant, DOS/Windows doesn't have (and never had) open source C culture, except for GNU ports.
Of course I'd like them to use linux, but they're even unable to fix their windows!
If you leave Win 95 on for a few days, even with no applications running, you'll probably get a BSOD. They had a fault in their timer code. :)
Eg: When you're a Roman Ceasar, for the first city you build, "Rome" will be in the edit box.
I do not see much difference. Maybe they disabled it or I haven't looked hard enough?
Nothing, ...yet.
But I hate too see some other good OSS project/firm going into financial problems.
plex86, slackware, (partly) loki, eazel, and many others. You will not be forgotten...

ln works the same way as cp command.
[ It also confused me for long. After all we are all programmers, and expect result:= expression; format. (Or was it 10 A$ = "Test" ) ]
Of course I am not installing 20 different crap to sit in the system tray, or rebooting the machine online, or open my doors to the viri.
Other than that, my machine is pretty active and loaded.
It should have been:
And I do not say that XP is better than MacOS or Linux.
What I say is XP is far better than 9x/NT/2k.
On the other hand I am a GNOME user, most of the time. But I prefer XP to older windowsen.
[ And Aqua theme for XP is better than Aqua theme for KDE (Liqiud, etc.) or GNOME (choose any one). ]
Correct me if I am wrong, but does RedHat support 4.0? Does Apple support MacOs 9? No they don't.

Unless you port them on a web page, they are legal.
Software value should not be calculated by the amount vendor spends, but by the amount "user gains".
Linux saves software cost. Also linux saves you from NIMDA. But linux means more expenses in tech team.
So value of linux is =
Value of Windows
+ Value that would be lost due to NIMDA, etc
- Cost of tech department difference
Which I guess is "much" more than $1G in total.

Just go to www.etree.org.
(etree is a music sharing community.)
Later on, the developer (Kevin) was hired by Mandrake soft, and the whole thing was licensed under LGPL.

It's click Yes "20 times"...
(Sorry I *had* to write this)

No, Flash is a very open format. See: http://www.openswf.org/.
