What's your point? Didn't have the guts to compare to an NT-kernel based Windows?

    Comparing NT to linux...

    • NT is crashes more often. (CNet had a test for web servers. Over one year two Linux servers did not require "reboot", where NT based servers had to be rebooted every two weeks)
    • NT is less scalable (try to run Win2K on 486!)
But Linux can run on handleds to IBM supercomputers
    • Linux is POSIX compilant where NT is "trying to be" POSIX compiant. (UNIX is the one true way TM)
    • Linux is open, one can change it to his special needs and exploits can be fixed much quickly. (You do not have to wait for one year for service pack 7)

"Microsoft sponsering Windows helps improving it"

I think you did not get it. Sun distributes some set of standard tools (c compiler, shells, etc). Where most of the Sun admins do not use their Sun versions but install GNU versions instead. because they are more robust, they have more features. This is like everyone installing WinAmp instead of WM7 crap, because it loads faster and it has more features.

Well there is long-lasting wine project that is capable of running windows apps. It has been developed for many years, but we're still far from running "most" windows apps on linux.

Here is a list from their "competitors" page:

    • SolarMoon: site now blank
    • Windows Replacement Project: I could not access their site
    • Freedows: preliminary code no longer available
    • ReactOS: preliminary code
    • WinFree: dicontinued
    • Wabi: sun's binary interface. site now registered by microsoft!
    • AllOS: no longer interested in windows compatibility

These are the dead or very slow projects. The statistics can be wrong, but usually this is not the case.

There are also "alive" projects. One is twin, but it's slow. Another is odin which was former OS/2-WIN code. But I do not know much about that one.

Well, let's realize this. The used idealist open source hackers to make their closed source codec and also money. Their license was less acceptable even than the darwin license!

What did they do? They make a "reference" implementation open. It contained all the features needed for MPEG4 except any optimizations. But then they did learn how to make a codec, they made another indoor version (which we do not know to contain code from open version). And they made it "faster" and "more reliable". ... several different licenses in parallel. One of them may be the GNU GPL.

The license that comes in your copy, assuming it was put in by the copyright holder and that you got the copy legitimately, is the license that applies to your

This means they can release newer version (or even repackage older versions) under a propitary license as long as they have the copryright.
