Well, my "downgrade" from W 8.1 wasn't smooth at all. I take raw partition images as FS backups and after restore, the W 8 didn't like itself any longer and failed to boot. The "repair" feature of the W8 install disk was trying all night and in the morning it concluded that it can't fix itself. A W 7 install/repair fixed the W8 boot failure malaise in minutes which got me quite amused.
